To lower the tailgate and side gates,
unlock the latches as shown.
On some models, the chains will hold the
tailgate in a straight open position.
See “Luggage stowage precautions” on
page 127 in Section 2 for precautions
when loading luggage.
When closing the gate, make sure it is
securely latched.
CAUTION
If the open tailgate hides the stop/tail
lights, back−up lights, rear retro re-
flectors, rear fog light or rear turn
signal lights while you are parked,
other road users must be warned of
the presence of your vehicle by a
warning triangle or other device.
NOTICE
Avoid driving with the tailgate or side
gates open.

1. To open the engine access hole cov-
er, release the latches and raise the
cover.
NOTICE
Always stow the cup holder in the
instrument panel before opening the
engine access hole cover. If this is
not done, the cover will hit the cup
holder and damage it. (See “Cup hold-
er” on page 110 in Section 1−9for
details.)
2. After lifting the cover up, hold it
open with the strap.
Before closing the engine access hole
cover, check to see that you have not
forgotten any tools, rags, etc.
CAUTION
DMake sure the strap supports the
engine access hole cover securely.
DAfter closing the cover, make sure
it is securely locked by pulling the
seat cushion upward.

The gauge indicates the approximate
quantity of fuel remaining in the tank
when the engine switch is on.
Nearly full—Needle at “F”
Nearly empty—Needle at “E”
It is a good idea to keep the tank over
1/4 full.
The needle moves when braking, acceler-
ating or making turns. This is caused by
the movement of the fuel in the tank.
If the fuel level approaches “E” or the low
fuel level warning light comes on, fill the
fuel tank as soon as possible.
On inclines or curves, due to the move-
ment of fuel in the tank, the fuel gauge
needle may fluctuate or the low fuel level
warning light may come on earlier than
usual.
On some models—
If the fuel tank is completely empty, the
malfunction indicator lamp comes on. Fill
the fuel tank immediately.
The indicator lamp goes off after driving
several times. If the indicator lamp does
not go off, contact any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly quali-
fied and equipped professional, as soon
as possible.The gauge indicates the engine coolant
temperature when the engine switch is
on. The engine operating temperature
will vary with changes in weather and
engine load.
If the needle moves into the red zone,
your engine is too hot. If your vehicle
overheats, stop your vehicle and allow the
engine to cool.
Your vehicle may overheat during severe
operating conditions, such as:
DDriving up a long hill on a hot day.
DReducing speed or stopping after high
speed driving.
DIdling for a long period with the air
conditioning on in stop−and−go traffic.
DTowingatrailer.
NOTICE
zDo not remove the thermostat in
the engine cooling system as this
may cause the engine to overheat.
The thermostat is designed to con-
trol the flow of coolant to keep the
temperature of the engine within
the specified operating range.
zDo not continue driving with an
overheated engine. See “If your ve-
hicle overheats” on page 156 in
Section 4.

ENGINE (IGNITION) SWITCH, TRANSMISSION AND PARKING BRAKE81
The shift pattern is conventional as
shown above.
On some models, the buzzer will sound
when you shift the gear into “R” (reverse).
Press the clutch pedal down fully while
shifting, and then release it slowly. Do not
rest your foot on the pedal while driving,
because it will cause clutch trouble. Do
not use the clutch to hold the vehicle
when stopped on an uphill grade—use the
parking brake.
Upshifting too soon or downshifting too
late will cause lugging, and possibly ping-
ing. Regularly revving the engine to maxi-
mum speed in each gear will cause ex-
cessive engine wear and high fuel
consumption.
Maximum allowable speeds
To get on a highway or to pass slower
traffic, maximum acceleration may be nec-
essary. Make sure you observe the follow-
ing maximum allowable speeds in each
gear:

Do not downshift if you are going
faster than the maximum allowable
speed for the next lower gear.

Good driving practice
DIf it is difficult to shift into reverse, put
the transmission in neutral, release the
clutch pedal momentarily, and then try
again.
DWhen towing a trailer, in order to main-
tain engine braking efficiency, do not
use fifth gear.
CAUTION
Be careful when downshifting on a
slippery surface. Abrupt shifting
could cause the vehicle to skid or
spin.
NOTICE
zDo not use any gears other than
first gear when starting off and
moving forward. Doing so may dam-
age the clutch.
zMake sure the vehicle is completely
stopped before shifting into reverse.

11 0OTHER EQUIPMENT
The cup holder is designed for holding
cups or drink−cans securely.
To use the cup holder, pull it out com-
pletely.
CAUTION
DDo not place anything else other
than cups or drink−cans in the cup
holder, as such items may be
thrown about in the compartment
and possibly injure people in the
vehicle during sudden braking or in
an accident. If possible, cover hot
drinks to prevent burns.
DTo reduce the chance of injury in
case of an accident or sudden stop
while driving, keep the cup holder
closed when it is not in use.
NOTICE
Left−hand drive vehicles only—
Always stow the cup holder in the
instrument panel before opening the
engine access hole cover. If this is
not done, the cover will hit the cup
holder and damage it.
To use the box, pull on the handle.
CAUTION
To reduce the chance of injury in
case of an accident or a sudden stop,
always keep the auxiliary box closed
while driving.

Drive gently and avoid high speeds.
Your vehicle does not need an elaborate
break−in. But following a few simple tips
for the first 1000 km (600 miles) can add
to the future economy and long life of
your vehicle:
DAvoid full throttle acceleration when
starting and driving.
DAvoid racing the engine.
DTry to avoid hard stops during the first
300 km (200 miles).
DDo not drive slowly with the manual
transmission in a high gear.
DDo not drive for a long time at any
single speed, either fast or slow.
DDo not tow a trailer during the first 800
km (500 miles).Selecting the proper fuel is essential
for satisfactory engine performance.
Engine damage caused by use of improp-
er fuels is not covered under Toyota’s new
vehicle warranty.
NOTICE
zDo not use improper fuels. If im-
proper fuels are used the engine
will be damaged.
zDo not use a fuel that contains
more than 50 ppm of sulfur. Use of
such a high sulfur fuel may damage
the engine.
zEU area: FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl
Ester) fuel sold under names such
as “B30” or “B100” and fuel
containing a large amount of FAME
should not be used. The use of
these fuels will damage the ve-
hicle’s fuel system. In case of any
doubt, ask any authorized Toyota
dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional.
zExcept EU area: FAME (Fatty Acid
Methyl Ester) fuel sold under names
such as “B30” or “B100” and fuel
containing a large amount of FAME
should not be used. Your vehicle
can use diesel mixed with 5% max
biodiesel FAME (B5). The use of
fuel with more than 5% FAME con-
tent (B5) will damage the vehicle’s
fuel system. You must ensure that
refueling is carried out only from a
source where fuel specification and
quality can be guaranteed. In case
of any doubt, ask any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or anoth-
er duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional.

The brake pad wear indicators on your
disc brakes give a warning noise when
the brake pads are worn to where re-
placement is required.
If you hear a squealing or scraping noise
while driving, have the brake pads
checked and replaced by your nearest au-
thorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped pro-
fessional, immediately.
Avoid continuous driving with the warning
noise.
Continuous driving without replacing the
brake pads will cause expensive rotor
damage and increasing brake pedal effort
to get the same stopping distance.When stowing cargo and luggage in or on
the vehicle, observe the following:
DPut cargo and luggage in the rear deck
when at all possible. Be sure all items
are secured in place.
DBe careful to keep the vehicle bal-
anced. Locating the weight as far for-
ward as possible helps maintain bal-
ance.
DFor better fuel economy, do not carry
unneeded weight.
CAUTION
DNever allow anyone to ride in the
luggage compartment. It is not de-
signed for passengers. They should
ride in their seats with their seat
belts properly fastened. Otherwise,
they are much more likely to suffer
death or serious bodily injury, in
the event of sudden braking or a
collision.
DDo not drive with objects left on
top of the instrument panel. They
may interfere with the driver’s field
of view. Or they may move during
sharp vehicle acceleration or turn-
ing, and impair the driver ’s control
of the vehicle. In an accident they
may injure the vehicle occupants.
