NOTEIf the front wheels are turned, the anti-theft lock may
sometimes make it difficult to turn the ignition switch
from “LOCK” to “ACC” position. Firmly turn the steer-
ing wheel to the left or to the right as you turn the ignition
switch.
Starting
N00514600190
Tips for startingDo not operate the starter motor for longer than 15 sec-
onds as this could run the battery down or damage the
starter motor. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition
switch back to the “LOCK” position, wait a few seconds,
and then try again. Trying repeatedly with the engine or
starter motor still turning will damage the starter mecha-
nism.
If the engine will not start because the battery is weak or
discharged, refer to “Jump-starting the engine” on page 6-
2 for instructions.
A longer warm up period will only consume extra fuel.
The engine is warmed up enough for driving when the bar
graph of the engine coolant temperature display starts to
move. Refer to “Interrupt display screen (With ignition
switch in the “ON” position)” on page 3-166.
On vehicles equipped with the Twin Clutch SST, the fol-
lowing may occur after the engine is started, but they do
not indicate an abnormality.
• You may hear operational sounds of the Twin Clutch
SST and you may feel vibration in the vehicle body.
• If you shift the gearshift lever into the “N” (NEUTRAL)
position and depress the accelerator pedal, increases in
the engine speed will be limited.
CAUTION
!Carry the key with you when leaving the vehicle. If your vehicle needs to be towed, turn the ignition
switch to the “ACC” position to unlock the steering
wheel.

damage the starter motor. If the engine does not start, turn

!Never run the engine in a closed or poorly ventilated
area any longer than is needed to move your vehicle
out of the area. Carbon monoxide gas, which is
odorless and extremely poisonous, could build up
and cause serious injury or death.
CAUTION
!Do not push-start the vehicle.Do not run the engine at high rpms or drive at high
speeds until the engine has had a chance to warm
up.Release the emergency key as soon as the engine
starts. It will damage the starter motor.

Limited-slip differential
N00517400014
A limited-slip differential is applied for front wheel differen-
tial. The features of this limited-slip differential are described
below:
Just as with a conventional differential, the wheel on one side
is allowed to turn at a different speed from the wheel on the
other side when the vehicle is cornering. The difference
between the limited-slip differential and a conventional differ-
ential is that if the wheel on one side of the vehicle loses trac-
tion, a greater amount of torque is applied to the wheel on the
other side to improve traction.NOTEEven if there is a difference in the amount of traction the
wheels can get, if both of them are spinning, the limited-
slip differential will not be effective.

-ASC OFF display
CAUTION
!The system may be malfunctioning.
Park your vehicle in a safe place and stop the engine.
Restart the engine again and check whether the dis-
play/indicator goes out. If they go out, there is no
abnormal condition. If they do not go out or appear
frequently, it is not necessary to stop the vehicle
immediately, but you should have your vehicle
inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as
possible.
CAUTION
!Never start the engine while one of the front or rear
wheels is jacked up and the other in contact with the
ground; doing so may cause the vehicle to jump for-
ward.Continuously attempting to extract the vehicle from
snow, mud, etc. while using high engine rpm may
damage the limited-slip differential.Using a compact spare wheel will adversely affect
the limited-slip differential; replace the compact
spare wheel with a standard size wheel as soon as
possible.

6If the vehicle breaks down
N00836300190
If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder
and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder,
or the shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly, with
the hazard lights flashing, until you come to a safe stopping
place. Keep the flashers flashing. If the engine stops/fails If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering
and brakes, making these difficult to use.
The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not
grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than
usual.
Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel
will be hard to turn. When the engine fails at the intersection Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the
vehicle and move it to a safe zone.
Jump-starting the engine
N00836400670
If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or
dead, you can start it with the battery from another vehicle
using jumper cables. NOTEAlthough the battery in your vehicle is located in the trunk
(refer to page 7-18), use the joint terminal in the engine
compartment to jump start the engine.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or brace-
lets that might make an accidental electrical contact.
WA R N I N G
!Follow the procedure described in this section when
using the jump cable to start the engine. Failure to
follow these instructions can cause serious injury or
death.
CAUTION
!Do not try to start your vehicle by pushing or tow-
ing. Vehicles with Twin Clutch SST cannot be
started this way. Pushing or towing a vehicle that
has a manual transaxle may overheat and damage
the catalytic converter. Also, there is more risk of an
accident when a vehicle is being pushed or towed.

5. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+)
terminal of the joint terminal, and the other end to the pos-
itive (+) terminal of the booster battery.NOTEOpen the joint terminal cover before connecting the
jumper cable to the positive terminal of the joint terminal.
Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size.
Otherwise heat damage to the cables could result.
Check the jumper cables for damage and corrosion before
use.6. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative
(-) terminal of the booster battery, and the other end to the
engine block of the vehicle with the low battery.
7. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the
engine idle a few minutes, then start the engine in the
vehicle with the low battery.

!Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting
the batteries, of: →→→. Make sure that the connection is made to the
engine properly. If the connection is directly made to
the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases
from inside the battery might catch fire and explode,
causing personal injury. When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect
the positive (+) cable to the negative (-) terminal.
Otherwise sparks can make the battery explode.
CAUTION
!Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught
in the cooling fans or other moving parts in the
engine compartment.

8. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the
reverse order from the way you connected them.
As your vehicle has anti-lock brakesIf you drive your vehicle with a low battery charge, after the
engine has been started by using jumper cables, the engine may
misfire. This can cause the anti-lock braking system warning
light to blink on and off. This is only due to the low battery
voltage. It is not a problem with the brake system. If this hap-
pens, fully charge the battery and ensure the charging system is
operating properly.
WA R N I N G
!Be sure to have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors
dealer charge the battery. Do not charge the battery
yourself.
Flammable gases may leak from the battery and
explode.Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulfu-
ric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your
hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your
vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. If electrolyte
gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thor-
oughly with water, and get prompt medical atten-
tion.Always wear protective clothing and goggles when
working near the battery.Keep the battery out of the reach of children.Never remove the battery label, upper cover,
exhaust tube, or pipe. Flammable gases may leak
and explode. This vehicle is equipped with a maintenance-free
battery located in the trunk.
To assure proper battery installation and venting of
flammable gases, the battery must be serviced
and/or replaced by an authorized Mitsubishi dealer
only.
