What to do in an emergency
Use a towing strap less than 16 feet (5m) long. Attach a white or red cloth
(about 12 inches (30 cm) wide) in the
middle of the strap for easy visibility.
Drive carefully so that the towing strap is not loosened during towing.

Emergency towing precautions
Place the ignition switch in ACC so thesteering wheel isn’t locked.
Place the transmission shift lever in N (Neutral).
Release the parking bake.
Press the brake pedal with more force than normal since you will have
reduced brake performance. More steering effort will be required
because the power steering system
will be disabled.
If you are driving down a long hill, the brakes may overheat and brake per-
formance will be reduced. Stop often
and let the brakes cool off.
WARNING
Use extreme caution when towing
the vehicle.

ing cable or chain. The hook and
towing cable or chain may break
and cause serious injury or dam-
age.
If the disabled vehicle can not be moved, do not forcibly continue
the towing. Contact an authorized

tow truck service for assistance.
Tow the vehicle as straight ahead as possible.
Keep away from the vehicle dur- ing towing.

CAUTION - Automatictransmission
If the car is being towed with all
four wheels on the ground, it canbe towed only from the front. Be sure that the transmission is inneutral. Be sure the steering is unlocked by placing the ignitionswitch in the ACC position. A driver must be in the towed vehi-cle to operate the steering andbrakes.
To avoid serious damage to the automatic transmission, limit thevehicle speed to 10 mph anddrive less than 1 mile when
towing.
Before towing, check the level of the automatic transmission fluid.If it is below the "HOT" range onthe dipstick, add fluid. If you can- not add fluid, a towing dolly mustbe used.

Clean the battery and terminals.
Check the brake fluid level.

Repeated short distance driving.

Driving in areas where salt or other corrosive materials are being used.
Driving on rough or muddy roads.

Extended periods of idling or low speed operation.
Driving for a prolonged period in cold temperatures and/or extremely humid

More than 50% driving in heavy city traffic during hot weather above 90°F

Finish maintenance
Washing
To help protect your vehicle’s finish from
rust and deterioration, wash it thoroughly
and frequently at least once a month with
lukewarm or cold water.
If you use your vehicle for off-road driv-
ing, you should wash it after each off-
road trip. Pay special attention to the
removal of any accumulation of salt, dirt,
mud, and other foreign materials. Make
sure the drain holes in the lower edges of
the doors and rocker panels are kept
clear and clean.
Insects, tar, tree sap, bird droppings,
industrial pollution and similar deposits
can damage your vehicle’s finish if not
removed immediately.
Even prompt washing with plain water
may not completely remove all these
deposits. A mild soap, safe for use on
painted surfaces, may be used.After washing, rinse the vehicle thor-
oughly with lukewarm or cold water. Do
not allow soap to dry on the finish.
APPEARANCE CARE
CAUTION
Do not use strong soap, chemical
detergents or hot water, and donot wash the vehicle in directsunlight or when the body of thevehicle is warm.
Do not wash the side windows too close with high pressurewater. Water may leak through the windows and wet the interior.
To prevent damage to the plastic parts and lamps, do not cleanwith chemical solvents or strong detergents.
WARNING - Wet brakes
After washing the vehicle, test the
brakes while driving slowly to see if
they have been affected by water. If
braking performance is impaired,
dry the brakes by applying them
lightly while maintaining a slow for-
ward speed.
CAUTION
Water washing in the engine com- partment including high pressurewater washing may cause the fail-ure of electrical circuits or engineand related part located in the engine compartment.
Never allow water or other liquids to come in contact with electri-cal/electronic components inside the vehicle as this may damagethem.

Underbody maintenance
Corrosive materials used for ice and
snow removal and dust control may col-
lect on the underbody. If these materials
are not removed, accelerated rusting can
occur on underbody parts such as the
fuel lines, frame, floor pan and exhaust
system, even though they have been
treated with rust protection.
Thoroughly flush the vehicle underbody
and wheel openings with lukewarm or
cold water once a month, after off-road
driving and at the end of each winter. Pay
special attention to these areas because
it is difficult to see all the mud and dirt. It
will do more harm than good to wet down
the road grime without removing it. The
lower edges of doors, rocker panels, and
frame members have drain holes that
should not be allowed to clog with dirt;
trapped water in these areas can cause
rusting.

Aluminum or chrome wheel mainte-nance
The aluminum or chrome wheels are
coated with a clear protective finish.
Do not use any abrasive cleaner, pol- ishing compound, solvent, or wire
brushes on aluminum or chrome
wheels. They may scratch or damage
the finish.
Clean the wheel when it has cooled.
Use only a mild soap or neutral deter- gent, and rinse thoroughly with water.
Also, be sure to clean the wheels after
driving on salted roads. This helps pre-
vent corrosion.
Avoid washing the wheels with high- speed car wash brushes.
Do not use any alkaline or acid deter- gent. It may damage and corrode the
aluminum or chrome wheels coated
with a clear protective finish.
WARNING
After washing the vehicle, testthe brakes while driving slowly to

water. If braking performance is

applying them lightly while main-
taining a slow forward speed.
If the underbody of you vehicle is sprayed with coating substances,
the high-speed drive system
parts such as the drive shaft or
propeller shaft will be out of bal-
ance and make noise or vibrate.
Moreover, the high-speed drive
system parts may be damaged.
