peraturerangesfornormaldrivingconditions.
However, ifengineoilviscositygradeSAE
SW40isnotavailable,youcanalsouseviscos

Theengineinyourvehicle depends onan ade

ofitsmoving parts.
Inordertoprovideeffectivelubricationand
coolingofinternaLenginecomponents,allin
ternalcombustionenginesconsumeacertain
amountofoil.Oilconsumptionvariesfram
enginetoengineandmaychangesignificantly
overthelifeoftheengine.Typically,engines
withaspecified break-inperiod(see
~page162)consumemoreoilduringthe
break-inperiodthantheyconsumeafteroil
consumptionhasstabilized.
Undernormalconditions,therateofoilcon
sumptiondependsonthequalityandviscosity
oftheoil,theRPM(revolutionsperminute)at
whichtheengineisoperated,theambient
temperatureandroadconditions.Furtherfac
torsaretheamountofoildilutionfromwater
condensationorfuelresidueandtheoxida
tionleveloftheoil.Asanyengineissubjectto
wearasmileagebuildsup,theoilconsump
tionmayincreaseovertimeuntilreplacement
ofworncomponentsmaybecomenecessary.
