You can centrally lock and unlock yo ur vehicle
and start the eng ine with the master key with
remote control. To fold the key o ut and back
in place, press the re lease button

Valet key
The valet key only fits the lock in the d river's
door and the ignition lock .
If you have to leave
the key with somebody e lse, yo u are well-ad ­
vised to turn
over the valet key only.
Be aware that the front lid and glove compa rt­
ment can be opened from ins ide the ve hicl e
using the release buttons . Emergency key
T he emergency key is only for tempo rary use if
the ve hicle key s hou ld be lost o r misplaced.
Key replacement
If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi
dealer immed iate ly to have the
lost key disa­
bled . Be sure to br ing all your keys with you .
If a key is lost, you should repo rt it to your in­
surance company .
Reg istered keys
You can inquire about the number of remote master keys registered to your vehicle
r=> page 25 . In this way, you can be certain of
obta ining all the remote master keys if you
purchase a used vehicle .

If you open the driver's door with the key
l eft in the ign ition lock, a ch ime will
sound. This is your reminder to remove the key and lock the door .

A WARNING

Always take the key with you when you
leave the vehicle. The key can disarm the
electronic engine immobilizer and permit
an unauthor ized person to start the engine
and enable operation of the vehicle sys­
tems such as power window leading to se­ r ious personal in jury .

-The vehicle cannot be started if an unau­
thorized key is used . The vehicle may not
start if another radio device such as a key
for another vehicle or a transponder is l ocated on the key ring.

Power locking system
General description
The power locking system locks or unlocks all
doors simultaneously.
When opening and closing the doors, the power locking system locks or unlocks
both
doors together.
The remote mas ter key locks and un locks the
doors using a radio signal
~ page 35.
Locking and unl ocking w ith the key
You can also lock and unlock your vehicle us­
ing the key in the lock o n the dr iver's door.
The unlocking and lock ing mode can be
changed in the Driver Informat ion System
~ page 25.
Both doors are locked automatically when the
vehi cle is locked and the ant i-theft alarm sys ­
tem is act ivated.
Auto Loc k
The Auto Lock function locks a ll doors once
speed has exceeded approximately 9 mph (15
km/h).
T he car is unlocked automat ica lly once the ig ­
nition key is removed . In add ition, the vehicle
can be un locked if the power locking system
opening function
(l;;i) is activated or one of the
door levers is used .
Turn signals
All the tu rn s ignals flash to indicate when the
vehicle is locked and unloc ked. The t urn sig­
nals flash twice when the vehicle is unlocked.
T he turn signa ls flash once when all the doors
and the front lid are locked. The interior lights
are also switched on or off automatica lly ac­
cord ing to the position of the door contact
switch .
A WARNING "---
-When you lock your vehicle from outside,
nobody -espec ially children -shou ld re­
main inside the vehicle. Remember,
when yo u lock the vehicle from the out­
side the windows cannot be opened from
the inside .
- When you leave the veh icle, always re ­
move the ignition key and take it with
you. This will prevent passengers (chil­ dren, for example) from accidentally be­ing locked in the vehicle should they acci­
dentally press the power locking switch
in one of the doors.
- Do not leave ch ildren inside the vehicle
unsuperv ised. In an emergency it would
be imposs ible to open the doors from
the outside without the key.

- The driver's door can be locked and un­
locked with the key if the power locking
system fails . The passenger's door can
be locked manually~

wipers must be switched off and the wiper
arms must be folded against the windshield .
Otherwise the paint could be damaged.

A WARNING
A front lid that is not completely latched
could fly up and block your view while driv ­
ing .
- When you close the front lid, check it to
make sure the safety catch has properly
engaged . The lid should be flush with the
sur rounding vehicle body parts.
- If you notice while driv ing that the lid is
not secured properly, stop at once and
close it.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended es­
pecia lly with the front lid left open .
A
child could crawl into the luggage com­
partment and pull the lid shut, becoming
trapped and unable to get out. To reduce
the risk of personal injury, never let chil­
dren p lay in or around your vehicle. A l­
ways keep the front lid as well as the ve­ hicle doors closed when not in use.
(D Note
Make sure no objects are protruding above
the edge of the luggage compartment.
Otherwise, the front lid could be dam­
aged .
@ Tips
If the front lid is open or not properly
l ocked when the ignition is turned on, the
door and front lid warning appears in the
in strument cluster dis play.
Emergency release for front lid
If the fron t lid cannot be opened, an emer­
gency release is provided .

Ignition on @
Afte r switch ing the ignition on, the needles
move all the way up and then down .
I f it is difficult to turn the key afte r you have
i nse rted it into the ignit ion lo ck, tur n the
steer ing whee l back and forth. This will take
the load off the steering lock mechanism and
you will be able to turn the key freely and start the engine .
Starting the engin e@
In th is position the engine starts. While the
engine is start ing, the power s upply to the
headlights and other e lectrica l consumers is
temporari ly interrupted to conserve battery
pow er. Aft er the engine has started, release
the key and it will return to posit ion @.
Before the starter can be operated again the
key must be turned back to position@. The
non -repe at lock prevents you from damaging
the starter when the engine is runn ing .
A WARNING
-Never remove the key from the ign ition
lock whi le the vehicle is moving. The
steering wheel will lock causing loss of control.
- If you have to leave your veh icle -even
for just a m in ute - always remove the ig­
nition key and take it with you. This is es­
pecially important if you a re going to
leave c hildren behind in the vehicle. The
children co uld start the engine or use
other vehicle controls . Unsupervised use
of vehicle controls (for example, power
windows) can cause serious personal in­
jur ies .
If the vehicle battery has been disconnect­
ed and then reconnected, then you m ust
leave the key in pos ition @for abo ut 5
seconds before you can start the engine.

Starting the engine
The engine can only be started with your orig­
inal Audi key.
On vehicles with R tronic *, the engine can be
start ed in the ne utra l position N and in each
gea r (1 - 6 and R).

fu lly depress the clutch pedal.

A cold engine may at first be loud afte r it has
been sta rted. This is due to the hydraulic
valves bu ild ing up the oil press ure . Thi s is nor­
mal and no need for concern.
If the engine does not start immediately, stop
tryi ng after 10 seconds and then try to restart
the engine abou t 30 seconds later.
A WARNING
- Never start or let the eng ine run in a con­
fined or enclosed area . Exha ust fumes
from the engine contain carbon monox­
ide, a co lor less and odorless gas. Carbon
mo nox ide ca n be fatal if inhaled.
- Never leave the engine idling unattend­
ed. An unattended veh icle with a runn ing
engine poses a danger of personal injury
or theft .
- With the engine r unning and a gear en­
gaged, you have to hold the veh icle w ith
the foot brake .
(D Note
- Avoid h igh engine speeds, fast accelera­
tion or heavy engine loads while the en­
gine is still cold. This could damage the
eng ine .

The parking brake warning light_
(USA)/ . (CON) ill uminates when the parking
brake is set and you switch on the ignition .
A WARNING
-
Always release the parking brake com­
pletely. A partially engaged brake will
overheat the rear brakes, reduce the ir ef­
fectiveness and cause excess ive wear. This
cou ld lead to brake failure and an accident .
(D Note
Only after the ve hicle has come to com­
plete stop, should you f irm ly set the park­
ing brake and move the gearsh ift lever into
a gear .
Parking
To prevent a parked vehicle from rolling
away, there are a few things you should do.
.,. Stop the vehicle using the brake pedal.
.,. Set the parking brake firmly .
.,. Switc h off the engine .

- Neve r allow anyone - especially small

senger compartment in the event of an

- Never leave c hildren unsupervised in the
vehicle. Children co uld re lease the park­

Hill ho ld assist makes it eas ier to start on
hills .
The system is activated when the brake peda l
is depressed
for a few seconds .
After releasing the brake pedal, the brake
power is held for a
brief moment to prevent
the ve hicle from rolling back when starting .
D uring this t ime, you can easily begin to move
your vehicle.
A WARNING
- If you did not begin moving immed iate ly
after rel easing the brake pedal, the vehi­
cle could b eg in to roll bac kward unde r
cer ta in c ircu mstances . Dep ress the brake
pe dal imme diate ly or eng age the p arking
bra ke.
- If the engine sta lls, de pre ss the bra ke
pe dal imme diate ly or engage the pa rking
brake .
- T o prevent the vehicle from ro lling b ack
un intent iona lly when st arting in stop ­
an d-go tra ffic, keep the brake pedal de ­
pressed for a few seconds before d riving
off.

A WARNING
Drivers who are unbelted, out of position
or too close to the airbag can be seriously
injured by an airbag as it deploys. To help
reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
10 inches (25 cm) between your breast­
bone and the steering wheel.
- Always adjust the driver's seat and the
steering wheel so that there are at least
4 inches (10 cm) between the knees and
the lower part of the instrument panel.
- Always hold the steering wheel on the
outside of the steering wheel rim with
your hands at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce the risk of per­
sonal injury if the driver's airbag inflates.
- Never hold the steering wheel at the
12 o'clock position or with your hands at
other positions inside the steering wheel
rim or on the steering wheel hub. Hold­
ing the steering wheel the wrong way
can cause serious injuries to the hands,
arms and head if the driver's airbag in­
flates
- Pointing the steering wheel toward your
face decreases the ability of the supple ­
mental driver's airbag to protect you in a
collision .
- Always sit in an upright position and nev­
er lean against or place any part of your
body too close to the area where the air­
bags are located.
- Before driving, always adjust the front
seats and head restraints properly and
make sure that all passengers are prop­
erly restrained.
- Never adjust the seats while the vehicle
is moving. Your seat may move unexpect­
edly and you could lose control of the ve­
hicle.
- Never drive with the backrest reclined or
tilted far back! The farther the backrests

are tilted back, the greater the risk of in­
jury due to incorrect positioning of the
safety belt and improper seating posi­
tion .
- Children must always ride in child seats

Proper seating position for the front
passenger
The proper front passenger seating position
is important for safe, relaxed driving.
For your own safety and to reduce the risk of
injury in the event of an accident, we recom­
mend that you adjust the seat for the front
passenger to the following position :
"' Adjust the angle of the seatback so that it is
in an upright position and your back comes
in full contact with it whenever the vehicle is
moving.
"' Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge
is as even as possible with the top of your
head. If that is not possible, try to adjust
the head restraint so that it is as close to
this position as possible

the front passenger seat .

Front seat passengers who are unbelted,

bag as it deploys. To help reduce the risk of

- Passengers must always sit in an upright
position and never lean against or place
any part of their body too close to the
area where the airbags are located.

For example, in a frontal collision at a speed
of 30 mph (48 km/h), the forces acting on a 10- lb (4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means that
t he we ight of the item would suddenly be
about 200 lbs . (90 kg). You can imagine the
in juries that a 200 lbs. (90 kg) item flyi ng
freely through the passenge r compartment
could cause in a collision like t his.

Every safety belt is eq uipped with an automat­
ic belt retractor on the shoulder belt . This fea­
ture locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, dur ing hard braking and in an accident .
The belt may also lock when you drive up or
down a steep hill or through a sharp curve .

Switchable locking feature
Every safety belt except the one on the driver
seat is equ ipped w ith a switchable locking fea­
ture that
