- Never install rear-facing chi ld safety
seats or infant carriers on the front pas­
senger seat. A chi ld will be ser iously in­
jured and can be k illed when the passen­
ger airbag inflates -even with an Ad­
vanced Airbag System .
- The inflating a irbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier w ith great
force and w ill smash the ch ild safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
- Always install rear-facing child safety
seats or infant car riers on the rear seat.
- Forward-fac ing ch ild safety seats instal­
led on the front passenger's seat can in­
terfere wi th the ai rbag when it inflates
and cause serious injury to the child. Al­
ways install forwa rd-facing child safety
seats on the rear seat .
- If exceptiona l circumstances require the
use of a forward-facing chi ld restraint on
the front passenger 's seat, the chi ld's
safety and well-being requ ire that the
following special precaut ions be taken:
- Make sure the fo rward-facing seat has
been designed and certified by its man­
ufacturer for use on a front seat with a
passenger front and side airbag.
- Always carefu lly follow the manufac­
turer 's instructions p rov ided with the
child safety seat or carrier.
- Always move the front passenger seat
into the rearmost position o f the pas ­
senger seat 's fore and aft adjustment
range, and as far away from the airbag
as possible before installing the child restra int.
- Always make sure that nothing pre­ vents the front passenger 's seat from
be ing moved to the rearmost position
in its fore and aft adjustment range.
- Always make sure that the backrest is
in the upr ight position .
- Never p lace or use any electrical dev ice
(such as a laptop, CD player, electronic
games device or power inverter) on the
front passenger seat if the device is connected to the
12-volt socket or the
c igarette lighter socket.
- If a seat heate r has been retrofitted or
otherwise added to the front passen­
ger seat, never install any child re­
stra int system on this seat.
- Make sure that there are no wet objects (such as a wet towel) and no water or
other liquids on the front passenger
seat cushion .
- Never place objects on the seat (such
as a laptop, CD player, e lectronic
games device or powe r inverte r) . These
may influence the electr ica l capaci­
tance measured by the capacitive pas­
senger detection system and can also
fly a round in an accident and cause se­
rious personal injury.
- Always buckle the child safe ty seat firmly
in place even if a ch ild is not sitt ing in it.
A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a s udden stop or in a collision.
- Always read and heed all WARNINGS whenever using a child restrained in ave­
h icle is being used

A WARNING ,-
To reduce the risk of serious injury , make
sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on whenever a
chi ld restraint is installed on the front pas­
senger sea t and the ignit ion is switched
on.
- Ta ke t he chi ld restraint off the front pas­
senger seat and install it prope rly at one
of the rear seat positions i f the
PASSEN­
GER AIR BAG OFF
light does not stay on.
- Have the airbag system inspected by
your author ized Audi dealer immed iate ­
ly.
A WARNING
A child in a chi ld restraint installed with
the LATCH lower anchorages or with the

~ Push the child safety seat down with your
full weight to get the safety belt rea lly tight
so that the seat cannot move forward or
s ideways more than one inch (2 .5 cm)

A toddler or child is usually too large for an in­
fant restra int if it is more than one year old
and weighs more than 20 lbs . (9 kg) .
Todd lers and c hildren who are older than one
year up to about 4 years o ld and weigh more
than 20 lbs (9 kg) up to 40 lbs. (18 kg) must
a lways be properly restra ined in a ch ild safety
seat ce rtified fo r the ir size and weight
<=> fig. 152 and <=>fig . 153.
The airbag on the passenger side makes the
fro nt seat a potentially dangerous place for a
ch ild to r ide . T he fro nt seat is not the safest
p lace for a child in a forwa rd -fac ing child safe­
ty seat. It is a very dangero us place for an in ­
fant or a larger child in a rearward -fac ing seat .
Secure unused safety belts on the rear
seat!
If a child s afety sea t is used o n the rear ben ch ,
espec ia lly w ith LA TCH universal anchorages,
the unused safety belts must be secured so
that the child in the chi ld restraint cannot
reach them.
A WARNING
Not using a ch ild safety seat, using the
w rong chi ld safety seat or improper ly in­
stalling a child restraint increases the risk
of serious personal injury and death in a
c o llision or othe r eme rgency s ituation.
- Children on the front seat of any car,
even with Advanced A irbags, can be seri­
o usly injured or eve n killed when an a ir­
b ag in flates. A child in a rearward-facing
child safety seat installed on the front
passenger seat w ill be seriously injured
and can be killed if the front ai rbag in­
flates - even with an Advanced Airbag
System.

use of a forward-facing child restraint on
the front passenge r's seat, the child's safe­
ty and we ll- being req uire that the follow­

facturer fo r use on a fro nt seat wi th a
passe nger front and side airbag.

the airbag as possible before installing
the forward-facing child restraint. The
backrest must be adjusted to an upright
position.

light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on.
A WARNING
Rearward-facing child restraints:
- A child in a rearward-facing child safety
seat installed on the front passenger
seat will be seriously injured and can be
killed if the front airbag inflates -even
with an Advanced Airbag System.
- The inflating airbag will hit the child
safety seat or infant carrier with great
force and will smash the child safety seat
and child against the backrest, center
armrest, door or roof.
- Always be especially careful if you must
install a rearward facing child safety seat
on the front passenger seat in exception­
al circumstances.
- Make sure that the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on and stays on all the
time whenever the ignition is switched
on .
- If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light
does not come on and stay on, immedi­
ately install the rear-facing child safety
seat in a rear seating position and have
the airbag system inspected by your Audi
dealer.
Activating the convertible locking retractor
Use the convertible locking retractor to se­
cure a child restraint.
Always heed the child safety seat manufactur­
er's instructions when installing a child re- straint in your vehicle. To activate the conver­
tible locking retractor:
.,. Place the child restraint on a seat, prefera­
bly on the rear seat.
.,. Slowly pull the belt
all the way out.
.,. Route it around or through the child re­
straint belt path

.,. Push the child safety seat down with your
full weight to get the safety belt really tight .
.,. Insert the belt tongue into the buckle for
that seating position .
.,. Guide the safety belt back into the retractor
until the belt lies flat and snug on the child
safety seat.
.,. You should hear a "clicking" noise as the
belt winds back into the inertia reel. Test the
convertible locking retractor by pulling on
the belt. You should no longer be able to
pull the belt out of the retractor. The con­
vertible locking retractor is now activated .
.,. Make sure that the red release button is fac­
ing away from the child restraint so that it
can be unbuckled quickly.
.,. Pull on the belt to make sure the safety belt
is properly tight and fastened so that the
seat cannot move forward or sideways more
than one inch (2.5 cm).
A WARNING
Using the wrong child restraint or an im­
properly installed child restraint can cause
serious personal injury or death in a crash.
- Always make sure that the safety belt re- tractor is locked when installing a child
safety seat. An unlocked safety belt re­
tractor cannot hold the child safety seat in place during normal driving or in a
crash.
- Always buckle the child safety seat firmly
in place even if a child is not sitting in it.
A loose child safety seat can fly around
during a sudden stop or in a crash.
- Always make sure the seat backrest to
which the child restraint is installed is in
an upright position and securely latched

Energy management
Starting ability is optimized
Energy management controls the distribution
of electrical energy and thus optimi zes the
availability of electrical energy for starting
the engine.
I f a vehicle w ith a conventional e nergy system
is not driven for a long pe riod of time, the bat­
tery is d isch arged by idling c urrent cons umers
(e .g. immobilizer) . In ce rtain circumstances it
can result in there being i nsu fficient ene rgy
avai lab le to start the engine .
I n tell igent energy m anagement i n your veh i­
cle hand les the d istribu tion of elec trical ener ­
gy . Starting abi lity is marked ly imp roved and
the life of the battery is extended.
B asically , energy m anagement consists o f
battery diagnosis , idling current manage­
ment
and dynamic energy management.
Battery diagnosis
B att ery d iagnosis con tinuously dete rm ines
the st ate of t he battery. Senso rs determ ine
battery vo ltage, batte ry cur rent and battery
tempera ture. This dete rmines the current
state of charge and the powe r of the battery .
Idling current management
Idling current ma nagemen t red uces energy
consum ption wh ile the veh icle is stand ing.
W ith the igni tion swi tched off, i t con tro ls the
energy s upply to the va rious e lectrica l compo­
nents. Data from battery diagnosis is consid­
ered.
D epending on the battery's s ta te of charge,
individua l consumers are gra dually t urned off
to p revent excessive discha rge of the battery
and thus ma inta in start ing capability.
Dynamic energy management
W hile t he vehi cle is being driven, dynamic e n­
ergy ma nagement dis tributes the energy gen ­
erated according to the needs of the indiv idu­
al components.
It r egulates consumption, so
that more electrical energy is not being used
t h an is being generated and ensures an opti­
mal state of c ha rge fo r the battery.

- But even ene rgy management cann ot
negate the limits of physics. Consider
that the powe r and life of a battery are
limited.
- If start ing ability is threatened, the indi­
cator light

What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining
starting capability.
The battery is severe ly taxed in short -d istance
driv ing, in city traff ic and during the cold time
o f year. Abundant electrical energy is re­
quired , but on ly a little is ge nerated . It is also
c ritical if the engi ne is not r unning and electri­
ca l components are tu rned on. In this in­
sta nce ene rgy is be ing consumed bu t none is
b eing gene ra ted .
It is in precisely these s ituations t hat yo u will
notice ene rgy management active ly regu lat­
i ng t he d istribu tion of ene rgy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If y ou do not drive your vehicle over a period
of several days o r weeks, e lectr ica l compo ­
nen ts a re g radually cut back or sw itched off .
T h is reduces energy consumption and ma in­
ta in s start ing ca pabili ty over a longer pe riod .
Some of the convenience func tion s may not
opera te, such as t he interior ligh ts or the
power seat adjustment. The convenience
funct ions wi ll be available again when yo u
switch on the ignition and start the eng ine . .,.
