Catalytic convertersThis vehicle is equipped with catalytic
converters in the exhaust system.

The exhaust system is hot after op-
eration. To prevent a re hazard or
burns:● Do not park the vehicle near
possible re hazards such as
grass or other materials that
easily burn.● Park the vehicle in a place
where pedestrians or children
are not likely to touch the hot
exhaust system.● Make sure that the exhaust
system has cooled down be-
fore doing any maintenance
work.● Do not allow the engine to idle
more than a few minutes. Long
idling can cause a build-up of
heat.

use of leaded gasoline will cause
unrepairable damage to the cata-
lytic converter.

1. Kickstarter To start the engine, fold out the kick-
starter lever, move it down lightly with
your foot until the gears engage, and
then push it down smoothly but force-
fully.

SeatTo open the seat
1. Place the scooter on the center-
stand.
2. Insert the key into the main
switch, and then turn it coun-
terclockwise to the fi rst “OPEN”
position. If the main switch is in
the “LOCK” position, turn the key
counterclockwise to the second
“OPEN” position.ZAUM00**TIPDo not push inward when turning the
key from “OFF” to “OPEN” or from
“LOCK” to “OPEN”.
3. Fold the seat up.
To close the seat
1. Fold the seat down, and then
push it down to lock it in place.
2. Remove the key from the main
switch if the scooter will be left
unattended.TIPMake sure that the seat is properly se-
cured before riding.

when using the rear storage com-
partment.● Since the rear storage com-
partment accumulates heat
when exposed to the sun, do
not store anything susceptible
to heat inside it.● To avoid humidity from spread-
ing through the rear storage
compartment, wrap wet articles
in a plastic bag before storing
them in the compartment.
● Since the rear storage com-
partment may get wet while the
scooter is being washed, wrap
any articles stored in the rear
compartment in a plastic bag.● Do not keep anything valuable
or breakable in the rear storage
compartment.

1. SidestandThe sidestand is located on the left
side of the frame. Raise the sidestand
or lower it with your foot while holding
the vehicle upright.TIPThe built-in sidestand switch is part
of the ignition circuit cut-off system,
which cuts the ignition in certain situa-
tions. (See page 3-12 for an explana-
tion of the ignition circuit cut-off sys-
tem.)

WARNING
The vehicle must not be ridden with
the sidestand down, or if the sid-
estand cannot be properly moved
up (or does not stay up), otherwise
the sidestand could contact the
ground and distract the operator,
resulting in a possible loss of con-
trol. Yamaha’s ignition circuit cut-
off system has been designed to
assist the operator in ful lling the
responsibility of raising the sides-
tand before starting off. Therefore,
check this system regularly and
have a Yamaha dealer repair it if it
does not function properly.

Ignition circuit cut-off systemCheck the operation of the sidestand
switch according to the following pro-
cedure.Turn the key on.
Put the sidestand up.Push the start switch while applying
either of the brake levers. The engine will
start.Put the sidestand down.
If the engine stalls:
The sidestand switch is OK.
WARNING
● The vehicle must be placed on
the centerstand during this in-
spection.● If a malfunction is noted, have
a Yamaha dealer check the
system before riding.

TIPThis model is equipped with a lean
angle sensor to stop the engine in
case of a turnover. To start the en-
gine after a turnover, be sure to turn
the main switch to “OFF” and then to
“ON”. Failing to do so will prevent the
engine from starting even though the
engine will crank when pushing the
start switch.

In order for the ignition circuit cut-off
system to enable starting, the sides-
tand must be up.
See page 3-12 for more information.
1. Turn the key to “ON”.
2. Close the throttle completely.
3. Start the engine by pushing the
start switch while applying the
front or rear brake.
NOTICE:
For
maximum engine life, never ac-
celerate hard when the engine
is cold!

If the engine does not start, re-
lease the start switch, wait a few
seconds, and then try again.
Each starting attempt should be
as short as possible to preserve
the battery. Do not crank the en-
gine more than 5 seconds on any
one attempt. If the engine does not start with the starter motor, try
using the kickstarter.
