Before driving

When required to leave a key to th e vehicle with a parking attendant
Turn the luggage security system on. ( →P. 3 4 )
Carry the master key for your own use and leave the valet key only with the
attendant.
n Key number plate
Keep the plate in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle. In the
event that a key is lost, a new key can be made by your Toyota dealer using
the key number plate. ( →P. 325)
n When riding in an aircraft
When bringing a wireless remote control key onto an aircraft, make sure you
do not press any buttons on the wireless remote control key while inside the
aircraft cabin. If you are carrying a wireless remote control key in your bag
etc, ensure that the buttons are not likely to be pressed accidentally. Press-
ing a button may cause the wireless remote control key to emit radio waves
that could interfere with the operation of the aircraft.
NOTICE
nTo prevent key damage (vehicles with engine immobilizer system)
l Do not subject the keys to strong shocks, expose them to high tempera-
tures by placing them in direct sunlight, or get them wet.
l Do not expose the keys to electromagnetic materials or attach any mate-
rial that blocks electromagnetic waves to the key surface.

The vehicle has a maintenance-free type engine immobilizer system.
n Conditions that may cause the system to malfunction
l If the key is in contact with a metallic object
l If the key is in close proximity to or touching a key to the security system
(key with a built-in transponder chip) of another vehicle

engine from starting if the key has not been previously registered in
the vehicle’s on-board computer.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle when you leave the vehicle.

nTurning the key from ACC to LOCK

The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( →P. 63)
n Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened, while the engine switch is in
the ACC or LOCK position to remind you to remove the key.
CAUTION
nWhen starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not depress the
accelerator while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
n Caution while driving
Do not turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
If in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving,
turn the engine switch only to the ACC position.
Shift the shift lever to P (auto-
matic transmission) or N (man-
ual transmission). ( →P. 116, 118)
Push in the key and turn to the
LOCK position.
When starting the engine, the engine
switch may seem stuck in the LOCK posi-
tion. To free it, turn the key while turning
the steering wheel slightly in either direc-
tion.

If the engine will not start
If the engine still does not start after following the correct starting
procedure ( →P. 112) or releasing the steering lock (→ P. 112), confirm
the following points.
n The engine will not start even when the starter motor oper-
ates normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
lThere may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
l The engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine once more following correct starting
procedures.
l Vehicles with engine immobilizer system: There may be a
malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.

n The starter motor turns over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
lThe battery may be discharged. ( →P. 326)
l The battery terminal connec tions may be loose or corroded.

If you lose your keys
nIf you lose all your master keys. ( vehicles with engine immobilizer sys-
tem)
You cannot make new keys, the whole engine immobilizer system must be
replaced. New genuine Toyota keys can be made by your Toyota dealer using
the key number stamped on your key number plate. Vehicles with
engine immobilizer system, the dealer will also need the master key.
