accident such as fire. Be sure to have thesystems of the SRS
airbag and seat belt pretensioner removed and disposed of by a
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional, before you dispose of your vehicle.
Multi−mode manual transmission
driving tips
(Models equipped with multi−mode manual
transmission only)
The multi−mode manual transmission is a 5−speed forward/reverse
transmission and to do the clutch operation and gear shift
electronically having the basic features of the conventional manual
transmission.
This system has two driving modes. Easy (E) mode automatically
selects an appropriate gear position in accordance with an
accelerator pedal operation and a vehicle speed variation. Manual
(M) mode allows the driver to shift the gear using the shift lever.
To understand the uniquesystem andoperation method of the
multi−mode manual transmission, read Section 1−7 on page 139

KEYS AND DOORS13
Engine immobilizer system
MS12029
The engine immobilizersystem is a
theft prevention system. When you in-
sert the key in the engine switch, the
transponder chip in the key’s head
transmits an electronic code to the ve-
hicle. The engine will start only when
the electronic code in the chip corre-
sponds to the registered ID code for
the vehicle.
Never leave the keys inside the vehicle
when you leave the vehicle.
The system is automatically set when ei-
ther of the following conditions applies.
DWhen the engine switch is turned from
the “ACC” to the “LOCK” position.
DWhen 20 seconds have elapsed since
the engine switch is turned from the
“ON” to the “ACC” position.
After opening the driver ’s door, inserting
the registered key in the engine switch
and turning it to the “ACC” position auto-
matically cancel the system, which en-
ables the engine to start.
The system is maintenance−free.
For your authorized Toyota dealer or work-
shop, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional, to make you a new
key with a built−in transponder chip, they
will need your key number and key. How-
ever, there is a limit to the number of
additional keys that can be made for you.If you make your own duplicate key,
you will not be able to cancel the sys-
tem or start the engine.
NOTICE
Do not modify or remove the system.
If modified or removed, the proper
operation of the system cannot be
guaranteed.

AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM185
The air conditioning filter may clog af-
ter long term use. The filter may need
to be replaced if the air flow of the air
conditioning and heating and defrosting
experiences extreme reductions in oper-
ating efficiency, or if the windows begin
to fog up easily.
To maintain the air conditioning efficiency,
inspect and replace the air conditioning
filter according to the maintenance sched-
ule. (For scheduled maintenance informa-
tion, please refer to the “Toyota Service
Booklet” or “Toyota Warranty Booklet”.)
MS18010a
1. Pull out the air conditioning filter as
shown in the illustration.
2. Inspect the filter on the surface.
If it is dirty, it should be replaced.
INFORMATION
The air filter should be installed prop-
erly in position. The use of air condi-
tioning with the air filter removed
may cause deteriorated dustproof per-
formance and then affect air condi-
tioning performance.

194INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA
Break−in period
Drive gently and avoid high speeds.
Your vehicle does not need an elaborate
break−in. But following a few simple tips
for the first 1000 km (600 miles) can add
to the future economy and long life of
your vehicle:
DAvoid full throttle acceleration when
starting and driving.
DAvoid racing the engine.
DTry to avoid hard stops during the first
300 km (200 miles).
DDo not drive slowly with the manual
transmission in a high gear.
DDo not drive for a long time at any
single speed, either fast or slow.
Fuel
Selecting the proper fuel is essential
for satisfactory engine performance.
Engine damage caused by use of improp-
er fuels is not covered under Toyota’s new
vehicle warranty.
NOTICE
zDo not use improper fuels. If im-
proper fuels are used the engine
will be damaged.
zDo not use leaded gasoline on your
vehicle. Use of leaded gasoline will
cause damage to the engine. Also,
this can increase maintenance
costs.
zEU area: Bioethanol fuel sold under
names such as “E50” or “E85” and
fuel containing a large amount of
ethanol should not be used. The
use of these fuels will damage the
vehicle’s fuel system. In case of
any doubt, ask any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped
professional.
zExcept EU area: Bioethanol fuel
sold under names such as “E50” or
“E85” and fuel containing a large
amount of ethanol should not be
used. Your vehicle can use gasoline
mixed with 10% max ethanol. The
use of fuel with more than 10%
ethanol content (E10) will damage
the vehicle’s fuel system. You must
ensure that refueling is carried out
only from a source where fuel spec-
ification and quality can be guaran-
teed. In case of any doubt, ask any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer,
or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.

INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA197
The three−way catalytic converter is an
emission control device installed in the
exhaust system.
The purpose is to reduce pollutants in the
exhaust gas.
CAUTION
DKeep people and combustible mate-
rials away from the exhaust pipe
while the engine is running. The
exhaust gas is very hot.
DDo not drive, idle or park your ve-
hicle over anything that might burn
easily such as grass, leaves, paper
or rags.
NOTICE
A large amount of unburned gases
flowing into the three−way catalytic
converter may cause it to overheat
and create a fire hazard. To prevent
this and other damage, observe the
following precautions:
zUse only unleaded gasoline.
zDo not drive with an extremely low
fuel level; running out of fuel could
cause the engine to misfire, creat-
ing an excessive load on the three−
way catalytic converter.
zDo not allow the engine to run at
idle speed for more than 20 min-
utes.
zAvoid racing the engine.
zDo not push−start or pull−start your
vehicle.
zDo not turn off the engine while the
vehicle is moving.
zKeep your engine in good running
order. Malfunctions in the engine
electrical system, electronic ignition
system/distributor ignition system
or fuel system could cause an ex-
tremely high three−way catalytic
converter temperature.
zIf the engine becomes difficult to
start or stalls frequently, take your
vehicle in for a check−up to any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer,
or another duly qualified and
equipped professional.
zTo ensure that the three−way
catalytic converter and the entire
emission control system operate
properly, your vehicle must receive
the periodic inspections required by
the Toyota Maintenance Schedule.
For scheduled maintenance
information, refer to the “Toyota
Service Booklet” or “Toyota
Warranty Booklet”.

INFORMATION BEFORE DRIVING YOUR TOYOTA199
FUNCTIONS OF ENGINE OIL
Engine oil has the primary functions of
lubricating and cooling the inside of the
engine, and plays a major role in main-
taining the engine in proper working order.
ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION
It is normal that an engine should con-
sume some engine oil during normal
engine operation. The causes of oil
consumption in a normal engine are as
follows.
DOil is used to lubricate pistons, piston
rings and cylinders. A thin film of oil
is left on the cylinder wall when a pis-
ton moves downwards in the cylinder.
High negative pressure generated when
the vehicle is decelerating sucks some
of this oil into the combustion chamber.
This oil as well as some part of the oil
film left on the cylinder wall is burned
by the high temperature combustion
gases during the combustion process.
DOil is also used to lubricate the stems
of the intake valves. Some of this oil
is sucked into the combustion chamber
together with the intake air and is
burned along with the fuel. High tem-
perature exhaust gases also burn the
oil used to lubricate the exhaust valve
stems.
The amount of engine oil consumed de-
pends on the viscosity of the oil, the
quality of the oil and the conditions the
vehicle is driven under.
More oil is consumed by high−speed driv-
ing and frequent acceleration and decel-
eration.
A new engine consumes more oil, since
its pistons, piston rings and cylinder walls
have not become conditioned.Oil consumption:Max. 1.0 L per 1000
km (1.1 qts./600 miles, 0.9 lmp.qts./600
miles)
When judging the amount of oil con-
sumption, note that the oil may become
diluted and make it difficult to judge
the true level accurately.
As an example, if a vehicle is used for
repeated short trips, and consumes a nor-
mal amount of oil, the dipstick may not
show any drop in the oil level at all, even
after 1000 km (600 miles) or more. This
is because the oil is gradually becoming
diluted with fuel or moisture, making it
appear that the oil level has not changed.
The diluting ingredients evaporate out
when the vehicle is then driven at high
speeds, as on an expressway, making it
appear that oil has been excessively con-
sumed while driving at high speeds.
IMPORTANCE OF ENGINE OIL LEVEL
CHECK
One of the most important points in prop-
er vehicle maintenance is to keep the en-
gine oil at the optimum level so that oil
function will not be impaired. Therefore, it
is essential that the oil level be checked
regularly. Toyota recommends that the oil
level be checked every time you refuel
the vehicle.
NOTICE
Failure to check the oil level regularly
could lead to serious engine trouble
due to insufficient oil.
For detailed information on oil level check,
see “Checking the engine oil level” on
page 264 in Section 7−2.
