This indicator comes on when the en-
gine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion. It goes off after about 6 seconds.
This means the seat belt pretensioners
are operating properly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, side airbag
sensors, side and curtain shield airbag
sensors, airbag manual on−off switch, seat
belt pretensioner assemblies, inflators,
warning light, interconnecting wiring and
power sources. (For details, see “Service
reminder indicators and warning buzzers”
on page 127 in Section 1−6.)
If any of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction of the airbags
or seat belt pretensioners. Contact any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped
professional, as soon as possible.
DIf any front seat belt does not retract
or cannot be pulled out due to a mal-
function or activation of the relevant
seat belt pretensioner.
DThe seat belt pretensioner assembly or
surrounding area has been damaged.

DDo not put anything or any part of
your body on or in front of the
dashboard or steering wheel pad
that houses the front airbag sys-
tem. They might restrict inflation or
cause death or serious injury as
they are projected rearward by the
force of the deploying airbags. Like-
wise, the driver and front passenger
should not hold objects in their
arms or on their knees.
DDo not modify or remove any wir-
ing. Do not modify, remove, strike
or open any components such as
the steering wheel pad, steering
wheel, column cover, front passen-
ger airbag cover, front passenger
airbag or airbag sensor assembly.
Doing so may prevent the front air-
bag system from activating correct-
ly, cause sudden activation of the
system or disable the system,
which could result in death or seri-
ous injury.
Failure to follow these instructions
can result in death or serious injury.
Consult any authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified
and equipped professional, about any
repair and modification.
NOTICE

DDo not attach a cup holder or any
other device or object on or around
the door. When the side airbag in-
flates, the cup holder or any other
device or object will be thrown with
great force or the side airbag may
not activate correctly, resulting in
death or serious injury. Likewise,
the driver and front passenger
should not hold objects in their
arms or on their knees.
DDo not use seat accessories which
cover the parts where the side air-
bags inflate. Such accessories may
prevent the side airbags from acti-
vating correctly, causing death or
serious injury.
DDo not modify or replace the seats
or upholstery of the seats with side
airbags. Such changes may prevent
the side airbag system from activat-
ing correctly, disable the system or
cause the side airbags to inflate ac-
cidentally, resulting in death or seri-
ous injury.
Failure to follow these instructions

other device or object around the
area where the curtain shield airbag
activates such as on the windshield

shield airbag inflates, the micro-
phone or other device or object will
be thrown away with great force or
the curtain shield airbag may not
activate correctly, resulting in death
or serious injury.

MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS255
Note, however, that some maintenance
tasks require special tools and skills.
These are best performed by qualified
technicians. Even if you’re an experienced
do−it−yourself mechanic, we recommend
that repairs and maintenance be
conducted by an authorized Toyota dealer
or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional. Any authorized
Toyota dealer or repairer will keep a
record of maintenance, which could be
useful should you ever require Warranty
Service. Should you choose to select a
qualified and equipped professional other
than an authorized Toyota repairer to
service or maintain your vehicle, we
recommend that you request that a record
of maintenance be kept.
The service interval for scheduled main-
tenance is determined by the odometer
reading or time interval, whichever
comes first, shown in the schedule.
Rubber hoses (for cooling and heater
system, brake system and fuel system)
should be inspected by a qualified tech-
nician in accordance with the Toyota
maintenance schedule.
They are particularly important mainte-
nance items. Have any deteriorated or
damaged hoses replaced immediately.
Note that rubber hoses will deteriorate
with age, resulting in swelling, chafing or
cracks.Be on the alert for changes in perfor-
mance, sounds, and visual tip−offs that
indicate service is needed. Some impor-
tant clues are as follows:
DEngine missing, stumbling, or pinging
DAppreciable loss of power
DStrange engine noises
DA leak under the vehicle (however, wa-
ter dripping from the air conditioning
after use is normal.)
DChange in exhaust sound (This may
indicate a dangerous carbon monoxide
leak. Drive with the windows open and
have the exhaustsystem checked im-
mediately.)
DFlat−looking tire; excessive tire squeal
when cornering; uneven tire wear
DVehicle pulls to one side when driving
straight on a level road
DStrange noises related to suspension
movement
DLoss of brake effectiveness; spongy
feeling brake or clutch pedal; pedal al-
most touches floor; vehicle pulls to one
side when braking
DEngine coolant temperature continually
higher than normal
If you notice any of these cues, take your
vehicle to any authorized Toyota dealer or
repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional, as soon as pos-
sible. It probably needs adjustment or re-
pair.
CAUTION
Do not continue driving with the ve-
hicle unchecked. It could result in se-
rious vehicle damage and possibly
personal injury.

DO−IT−YOURSELF MAINTENANCE: Introduction261
NOTICE
zRemember that battery and ignition
cables carry high currents or volt-
ages. Be careful not to accidentally
cause a short circuit.
zAdd only “Toyota Super Long Life
Coolant” or similar high quality eth-
ylene glycol based non−silicate,
non−amine, non−nitrite, and non−bo-
rate coolant with long−life hybrid
organic acid technology to fill the
radiator. “Toyota Super Long Life
Coolant” is a mixture of 50% cool-
ant and 50% deionized water.
zIf you spill some of the coolant, be
sure to wash it off with water to
prevent it from damaging any parts
or paint.
zDo not allow dirt or anything else
to fall through the spark plug holes.
zDo not pry the outer electrode of a
spark plug against the center elec-
trode.
zUse only spark plugs of the speci-
fied type. Using other types will
cause engine damage, loss of per-
formance or radio noise.
zIf you spill brake fluid, be sure to
wash it off with water to prevent it
from damaging any parts or paint.
zDo not drive with the air cleaner
filter removed, or excessive engine
wear could result. Also backfiring
could cause a fire in the engine
compartment.
zBe careful not to scratch the glass
surfaces with the wiper frames.
zWhen closing the engine hood,
check to see that you have not for-
gotten any tools, rags, etc.
