EC-16
< BASIC INSPECTION >[HR16DE]
DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIR WORK FLOW
DETAILED FLOW
1.GET INFORMATION FOR SYMPTOM
1. Get the detailed information from the customer about the symptom (the condition and the environment
when the incident/malfunction occurred) using the “Diagnostic Work Sheet”. (Refer to EC-18, "
Diagnostic
Work Sheet".)
2. Ask if the customer requests I/M examination.
Malfunction information, obtained>>GO TO 2.
No malfunction information, but a request for I/M examination>>GO TO 13.
2.CHECK DTC
1. Check DTC.
2. Perform the following procedure if DTC is displayed.
- Record DTC and freeze frame data. (Print them out with CONSULT-III or GST.)
- Erase DTC.
- Study the relationship between the cause detected by DTC and the symptom described by the customer. (Symptom Table is useful. Refer to EC-488, "
Symptom Table".)
3. Check related service bulletins for information.
Is any symptom described and is any DTC detected?
Symptom is described, DTC is detected>>GO TO 3.
Symptom is described, DTC is not detected>>GO TO 4.
Symptom is not described, DTC is detected>>GO TO 5.
3.CONFIRM THE SYMPTOM
Try to confirm the symptom described by the customer (except MIL ON).
Also study the normal operation and fail sa fe related to the symptom. Refer to EC-492, "
Description" and EC-
475, "FailSafe".
Diagnosis Work Sheet is useful to verify the incident.
Verify relation between the symptom and the condition when the symptom is detected.
>> GO TO 5.
4.CONFIRM THE SYMPTOM
Try to confirm the symptom described by the customer.
Also study the normal operation and fail sa fe related to the symptom. Refer to EC-492, "
Description" and EC-
475, "FailSafe".
Diagnosis Work Sheet is useful to verify the incident.
Verify relation between the symptom and the condition when the symptom is detected.
>> GO TO 6.
5.PERFORM DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE
Perform DTC CONFIRMATION PROCEDURE for the di splayed DTC, and then make sure that DTC is
detected again.
If two or more DTCs are detected, refer to EC-477, "
DTCInspectionPriorityChart" and determine trouble
diagnosis order.
NOTE:
• Freeze frame data is useful if the DTC is not detected.
• Perform Component Function Check if DTC CONFIR MATION PROCEDURE is not included on Service
Manual. This simplified check procedure is an effect ive alternative though DTC cannot be detected during
this check.
If the result of Component Function Check is NG, it is the same as the detection of DTC by DTC CONFIR-
MATION PROCEDURE.
Is DTC detected?
*1: Include 1st trip DTC.
*2: Include 1st trip freeze frame data.

IDLE SPEED : DescriptionINFOID:0000000005929749
This describes how to check the idle speed. For the
actual procedure, follow the instructions in “BASIC
INSPECTION”.
IDLE SPEED : Special Repair RequirementINFOID:0000000005929750
1.CHECK IDLE SPEED
With CONSULT-III
Check idle speed in “DATA MONITOR” mode with CONSULT-III.
With GST
Check idle speed with Service $01 of GST.

IGNITION TIMING : DescriptionINFOID:0000000005929751
This describes how to check the ignition timing. For the actual procedure, follow the instructions in “BASIC
INSPECTION”.
IGNITION TIMING : Special Repair RequirementINFOID:0000000005929752
1.CHECK IGNITION TIMING
1. Attach timing light to No. 1 ignition coil (1) wire as shown.
2. Check ignition timing.
>> INSPECTION END
VIN REGISTRATION
VIN REGISTRATION : DescriptionINFOID:0000000005929753
VIN Registration is an operation to registering VIN in ECM. It must be performed each time ECM is replaced.

4.CHECK IDLE SPEED AND IGNITION TIMING
Rev up the engine two or three times and make sure that idle speed and ignition timing are within the specifi-
cations.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> INSPECTION END
5.DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following
• Check that throttle valve is fully closed.
• Check PCV valve operation.
• Check that downstream of throttle valve is free from air leakage.
Is the inspection result normal?
YES >> GO TO 6.
NO >> Repair or replace malfunctioning part.
6.DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Engine component parts and their installation conditi on are questionable. Check and eliminate the cause of
the incident.
It is useful to perform “TROUBLE DIAG NOSIS - SPECIFICATION VALUE”. Refer to EC-114, "
Description".
If any of the following conditions occur after the engi ne has started, eliminate the cause of the incident and
perform Idle Air Volume Learning again:
• Engine stalls.
• Erroneous idle.
