• Use Tool and a press to remove the piston pin.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage the piston and connecting rod.
NOTE:
The joint between the connecting rod and the piston pin is a
press fit.
8. Remove the main bearing cap in the following procedure. • Measure crankshaft end play before loosening main bearing cap bolts. Refer to EM-97, "
Inspection"
a. Loosen and remove bolts in several steps in reverse of the
numerical order shown.
• TORX socket (size: E14) can be used.
b. Label parts for assembly and remove the main beari ng cap from the cylinder block while tapping lightly
with a plastic hammer.
CAUTION:
Identify installation positions, and store th em without mixing up.
9. Remove crankshaft (2). CAUTION:
• Be careful not damage or deform signal plate (1) mountedon crankshaft.
• When setting crankshaft on a flat floor surface, use a block of wood to avoid interference between signal plate
and the floor surface.
• Never remove signal plate unl ess it is necessary to do so.
NOTE:
When removing or installing signal plate, use TORX socket (size
T40).
10. Pull rear oil seal out from rear end of crankshaft.
11. Label parts for assembly and remove main bearing (upper and lower) and thrust bearings from cylinder block and main bearing cap.
CAUTION:
Identify installation positions, and store th em without mixing up.
ASSEMBLY
1. Fully air-blow engine coolant and engine oil passages in cylinder block, cylinder bore and crankcase to
remove any foreign material.

Measure the outer diameter of piston pin with a micrometer.
Connecting Rod Small End Clearance
(Connecting rod small end clearance) = (Connecting rod sm
all end inner diameter) – (Piston pin outer diame-
ter)
• If the measured value is out of the standard, repl ace connecting rod assembly and/or piston and piston pin
assembly.
• If replacing connecting rod assembly, use "CONNECTING ROD BEARING OIL CLEARANCE" to select con-
necting rod bearing.
CYLINDER BLOCK TOP SURFACE DISTORTION
• Using a scraper, remove gasket on the cylinder block su rface, and also remove engine oil, scale, carbon, or
other contamination.
CAUTION:
Be careful not to allow gasket flakes to en ter engine oil or engine coolant passages.
• Measure the distortion on the cylinder block upper face at some different points in six directions with a straight edge and a feeler
gauge.
• If it exceeds the limit, replace cylinder block.
MAIN BEARING HOUSING INNER DIAMETER
• Install main bearing cap without main bearings install ed, and tighten main bearing cap bolts to the specified
torque. Refer to EM-90, "
Disassembly and Assembly".
• Measure the position shown [5 mm (0.196 in) rearward from main bearing housing front side end surface) in the 2 directions as
shown. The smaller one is the measured value.
• If out of the standard, replace cylinder block and main bearing caps as an assembly.
NOTE:
These components cannot be replaced as a single unit, because they were processed together.

6. Perform a self-diagnosis check of al l control units using CONSULT-III.
Precaution for Procedure without Cowl Top CoverINFOID:0000000005930985
When performing the procedure after removing cowl top cover, cover
the lower end of windshield.
Precaution for Drain CoolantINFOID:0000000005930986
• Drain coolant when engine is cooled.
Precaution for Disconnecting Fuel PipingINFOID:0000000005930987
• Before starting work, make sure no fire or spark producing items are in the work area.
• Release fuel pressure before disassembly.
• After disconnecting pipes, plug openings to stop fuel leakage.
Precaution for Removal and DisassemblyINFOID:0000000005930988
• When instructed to use special service tools, use the spec ified tools. Always be careful to work safely, avoid
forceful or uninstructed operations.
• Exercise maximum care to avoid damage to mating or sliding surfaces.
• Cover openings of engine system with tape or the equiva lent, if necessary, to seal out foreign materials.
• Mark and arrange disassembly parts in an organized way for easy troubleshooting and assembly.
• When loosening nuts and bolts, as a basic rule, start with the one furthest outside, then the one diagonally
opposite, and so on. If the order of loosening is specif ied, do exactly as specified. Power tools may be used
where noted in the step.
Precaution for Inspection, Repair and ReplacementINFOID:0000000005930989
• Before repairing or replacing, thoroughly inspect parts. Inspect new replacement parts in the same way, and
replace if necessary.
Precaution for Assembly and InstallationINFOID:0000000005930990
• Use torque wrench to tighten bolts or nuts to specification.
• When tightening nuts and bolts, as a basic rule, equally tighten in several different steps starting with the ones in center, then ones on inside and outside diagonally in this order. If the order of tightening is specified,
do exactly as specified.
• Replace with new gasket, packing, oil seal or O-ring.
• Thoroughly wash, clean, and air-blow each part. Carefully check oil or coolant passages for any restriction
and blockage.
• Avoid damaging sliding or mating surfaces. Completely remove foreign materials such as cloth lint or dust. Before assembly, oil sliding surfaces well.
• Release air within route after draining coolant.
• Before starting engine, apply fuel pressure to fuel lines with turning ignition switch ON (with engine stopped). Then make sure that there are no leaks at fuel line connections.
• After repairing, start engine and increase engine speed to check coolant, fuel, oil, and exhaust systems for leakage.
