NOTE
Under conditions such as sporty driving, the brake fluid in
the tank may move and the warning display may appear
temporarily.
If the warning display goes out after a while, there is not a
problem with the brake system and the vehicle can be
driven normally.
Charging system warning display

If there is a fault in the charging system, the warning display is
displayed on the information screen in the multi-information
display. The warning light in the instrument cluster also illumi-
nates.
CAUTION
!
If the brake warning display, brake warning light,
and the Anti-lock braking system warning light are
illuminated at the same time, the braking force dis-
tribution function will not operate, so the vehicle
may be destabilized during sudden braking. Avoid
sudden braking and high-speed driving. Park the
vehicle in a safe place, and contact an authorized
Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice.
The vehicle should be brought to a halt in the follow-
ing manner when brake performance is deterio-
rated.
• Confirm that the vehicle slows down when you
press down on the brake pedal harder than usual.
In some cases, the brake pedal may go all the way
to the floor.
• Should the brakes fail, use engine braking to
reduce your speed and slowly apply the parking
brake.
Depress the brake pedal to illuminate the stop
lights to alert the vehicles behind you.
CAUTION
!
If warnings are displayed while the engine is run-
ning, park your vehicle in a safe place as soon as
possible and contact an authorized Mitsubishi
Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice to
have the system checked.

All the parts of the brake system are critical to safety. Have the
vehicle serviced by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or
a repair facility of your choice at regular intervals according to
the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL”.When brakes are wetCheck the brake system while driving at a low speed immedi-
ately after starting, especially when the brakes are wet, to con-
firm they work normally.
A film of water can be formed on the brake discs and prevent
normal braking after driving in heavy rain or through large
puddles, or after the vehicle is washed. If this occurs, dry the
brakes out by driving slowly while lightly depressing the brake
pedal.When driving in cold weatherOn snowy roads, ice can form on the braking system, making
the brakes less effective. While driving in such conditions, pay
close attention to preceding and following vehicles and to the
condition of the road surface. From time to time, lightly
depress the brake pedal and check how effective the brakes are.When driving downhillIt is important to take advantage of the engine braking by shift-
ing to a lower gear while driving on steep downhill roads in
order to prevent the brakes from overheating.
Parking

Parking on a hillWhen parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the
front wheels toward the curb on a downhill, or away from the
curb on an uphill.
If necessary, apply chocks to wheels.For vehicles with manual transaxlePlace the gearshift lever into the “R” (Reverse) position when
parking on a downhill slope, into the 1st position when parking
on an uphill slope.For vehicles with Twin Clutch SSTBe sure that the parking brake is firmly set when parked and
that the gearshift lever is in the “P” (PARK) position.
When parking on a hill, it is important to set the parking brake
before moving the gearshift lever to the “P” (PARK) position.
This prevents loading the parking brake against the transmis-
sion gear. When this happens, it is difficult to move the gear-
shift lever out of the “P” (PARK) position.

Air conditioning switch

Push the switch, and the air conditioning compressor will turn
on. The air conditioning indicator light (A) will come on.
A sound will be made every time you push the switch.
Push the switch again and the air conditioning compressor will
stop and the indicator light (A) goes off.
NOTE
If a problem is detected in the air conditioning compres-
sor, the air conditioning indicator light (A) blinks. Press
the air conditioning switch once to turn it off, then once
more to turn it back on. If the air conditioning indicator
light does not blink there is no problem. If it does blink,
have it checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer
or a repair facility of your choice.

Sometimes, for example after using a high-pressure car
wash, the condenser can get wet, and the air conditioning
indicator light (A) blinks temporarily. Wait for a while,
press the air conditioning switch once to turn the system
off, then once more to turn it back on. Once the water
evaporates, the blinking will stop.
CAUTION
!
Using the air conditioning slightly increases the
engine idle speed. Therefore, make sure your foot is
firmly on the brake pedal when shifting the tran-
saxle into drive.

6If the vehicle breaks down

If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder
and turn on the hazard warning flashers. If there is no shoulder,
or the shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly, with
the hazard lights flashing, until you come to a safe stopping
place. Keep the flashers flashing. If the engine stops/fails If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering
and brakes, making these difficult to use.

The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not
grip well. The brake pedal will be harder to press than
usual.

Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel
will be hard to turn.When the engine fails at the intersection Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the
vehicle and move it to a safe zone.
Jump-starting the engine

If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or
dead, you can start it with the battery from another vehicle
using jumper cables. NOTE
Although the battery in your vehicle is located in the trunk
(refer to page 7-18), use the joint terminal in the engine
compartment to jump start the engine.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or brace-
lets that might make an accidental electrical contact.
WA R N I N G
!
Follow the procedure described in this section when
using the jump cable to start the engine. Failure to
follow these instructions can cause serious injury or
death.
CAUTION
!
Do not try to start your vehicle by pushing or tow-
ing. Vehicles with Twin Clutch SST cannot be
started this way. Pushing or towing a vehicle that
has a manual transaxle may overheat and damage
the catalytic converter. Also, there is more risk of an
accident when a vehicle is being pushed or towed.

2. Position the vehicles close enough together so that the
jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t
touching each other.
3. You could be injured if the vehicles move. Set the parking
brake firmly on each vehicle. Put an automatic transaxle,
Twin Clutch SST or CVT in “P” (PARK) or a manual
transaxle in “N” (Neutral). Turn the ignition switch to the
“LOCK” position. NOTE
Turn off all lights, heater, and other electrical loads. This
will avoid sparks and help save both batteries. 4. Remove the joint terminal cover (A).
CAUTION
!
Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12-volt bat-
tery. If the other system isn’t 12-volt, both systems
can be damaged.
WA R N I N G
!
Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position on
both vehicles. Make sure that the cables or your
clothes cannot be caught by the fan or drive belt.
Personal injury could result.
