The objectives are for the natural resources
which form the basis of our existence on this
plane ttobeu sed sparingl yand in amanner
which takes the requirements of both nature
and humanity into account.
You too can help to protect the environment
by operating your vehicle in an environmen-
tally responsible manner.
Fuel consumption and the rate of engine,
transmission, brake and tyre wear depend on
the following factors:
R operating conditions of your vehicle
R your personal driving style
You can influence both factors. You should
bear the following in mind:
Operating conditions:
R avoid short trips as these increase fuel con-
sumption.
R make sure that the tyre pressures are
always correct.
R do not carr yany unnecessary weight.
R keep an eye on the vehicle's fuel consump-
tion.
R remove roof racks once you no longer need
them.
R ar egularly serviced vehicle will contribute
to environmental protec tion. You should
therefor eadhere to the service inter vals.
R always have maintenance work carried out
at aq ualified specialist workshop ,e.g. a
Mercedes-Benz Service Centre.
Personal driving style:
R do not depress the accelerator pedal when
starti ngthe engine.
R do not warm up the engine with the vehicle
stationary. R
drive carefully and maintain asafe distance
from the vehicle in front.
R avoid frequent, sudden acceleration.
R change gear in good time and use each gear
only up to Ôof its maximum engine speed.
R switch off the engine in stationary traffic. Returning end-of-life vehicles

with the European Union (EU) End of Life
Vehicles Directive.
The End of Life Vehicles Directive applies to
vehicles with agros svehicle weight of up to

For several years ,Mercedes-Benz has been
meeting all the legal requirements for a
design which allows for recycling and reuse.

assembly plants which can recycle your vehi-
cle in an environmentally responsible man-
ner. The options for recycling vehicles and
parts are constantly being develope dand
improved .This means that your Mercedes-

relevant to safet yoronsafety-related sys-
tems must be carried out at aqualified spe-
cialist workshop. The specialist workshop
must have the necessary specialist knowl-
edge and tools to carry out the work required.
Mercedes -Benz recommends that you use a
Mercedes-Benz Ser vice Centre for thi spur-
pose. G
WARNING
Some safety systems only function when the
engine is running. You should therefore never
switch off the engine when driving. Otherwise,
the safety systems of your vehicle may not
function correctly and as aresult will no lon-
ger protec tyou and other person sasinten-
ded .Ina ddition, there is arisk that you may
lose control of your vehicle and thus cause an
accident. G
WARNING
Work carried out incorrectly, or alterations
made to the vehicle, e.g. re-routing of cables
under coverings, could cause the safety sys-
tems of your vehicle to stop working properly.
The safety systems would thus no longer pro-
tect you and other persons as intended. In
addition, there is arisk that you may lose con-
trol of your vehicle and thus cause an acci-
dent.

WARNING
If work on electronic equipmen tand its soft-
ware is carried out incorrectly, this equipment
could stop working. The electronic systems
are networ kedv ia interfaces. Tampering with
these electronic systems could cause mal-
func tions in system swhich hav enot been
modified. Malfunction ssuch as these can
seriously jeopardis ethe vehicle' soperating
safety and therefore your own safety.
You should therefore have all work and mod-
ifications to electronic components carried
out at aqualified specialist workshop. G
WARNING
If you drive over obstacle sathigh speed or if
the vehicle bottoms out in rough terrain, it
could cause heavy impact stothe vehicle
underbody, tyres or wheels. This coul dcause
your vehicle to be damaged, which in turn
might lead to an accident. This also applies to
vehicles which are equipped with underbody
protection.
You shoul dtherefore drive over obstacles
slowly. Prevent the vehicle from bottoming
out when driving off-road an difnecessar y,
hav eyourvehicle inspected at aqualified spe-

WARNING
Modifications to or work performe dincor-
rectly on the following parts can result in the
restraint systems not functioning as intended:
R the restraint system, consisting of seat
belts and thei ranchorage points, bel tten-
sioners, belt for celimiter sand airbags
R the wiring
R networked electronic systems
Airbags and belt tensioners could fail to
deploy or be trigge redinana ccident despite
the deceleration force being sufficient to trig-
ger the systems, or could be triggered unin-
tentionally. For this reason, never make any
modifications to the restrain tsystems.
Therefore, you must not tamper with elec-
tronic components or their software. SRS (Supplemen
talRestraint System)
Introduction SRS consists of:
R
the 6 SRS warning lamp
R airbags
R airba gcontrol unit (with crash sensors)
R belt tensioner sfor the front seat belts and
the outer seat belts in the rear
R belt force limiters
SRS reduces the risk of occupan ts coming
into contact with the vehicle's interio rinthe
even tofana ccident. It can als oreduce the
effect of the forces to which occupant sare
subjected during an accident.
SRS warnin glamp SRS functions are checked regularly when
you switch on the ignition and when the
engine is running. Therefore ,malfunctions
can be detected in good time.
The 6 SRS warning lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up when the ignition is switched
on. It goes out no later than afew seconds
after the engine is star ted. G
WARNING
If SRS is malfunctioning, individual systems
may be activated unintentionally or may not
be triggered in the even tofanaccident with
ah igh rate of vehicle deceleration.
Am alfunction has occurred if:
R the 6 SRS warning lamp does not light
up when the ignition is switched on.
R the engine is runnin gand the 6SRS
warning lamp doe snot go out after afew
seconds.
R the engine is runnin gand the 6SRS
warning lamp lights up again.
In this case, have SRS checked immediately
at aq ualified specialist workshop .Mercedes-
Benz recommends that you use aMercedes-
Benz Servic eCentr efor this purpose.
In particular ,work relevant to safet yoron
safety-related systems must be carried out at
aq ualified specialist workshop.
Triggering of belt tensioners, belt force
limiters and airbags During the first stage of
acollision ,the airbag
con trol unit evaluates important physical
data relatin gtovehicle deceleration or accel-
eration, such as:
R duration
R direction
R magnitude
Based on the evaluation of this data, the air-
bag control unit pre-emptively triggers the
belt tensioner sinthe first stage.
i The front belt tensioner scan only be trig-
gered if the seat belt tongues on the front
seats are correctly engaged in the seat belt
buckles.
If there is an even higher rate of vehicle decel-
eration or acceleration in alongitudinal direc-
tion ,the front airbags ar ealso deployed.
Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air-
bags. The airbag control unit evaluates vehi-
cle deceleration or acceleration in the event Occupant safety

tbelt adjustment The seat-belt adjustment func
tion adjusts the
driver's and front-passenger seat belt to the
upper body of the occupants.
The belt strap is tighte neds lightly when:
R you engage the belt tongue in the belt
buckle and you then turn the key to position
2 in the ignition lock.
R the key is in position 2in the ignition lock
and you then engage the belt tongue in the
buckle.
The seat-belt adjustment will apply acertain
tightening force if any slack is detected
between the occupant and the seat belt. Do
not hold on to the seat belt tightly while it is
adjusting. You can switc hthe seat-belt
adjustment on and off in the on-boar dcom-
puter (Y page 251).
The seat-belt adjustment is an integra lpart of
the PRE-SAFE ®
convenience function. More
information about PRE-SAFE ®
can be found
in the "PRE-SAFE ®
(preventative occupant
protection)" section (Y page 45).
Belt height adjustment You can adjust the seat belt height on the
driver' sseat and the front-passenger seat. Adjust the height so that the upper part of the
seat belt is routed across the centre of your
shoulder. X
To raise: slide the belt sash guide upwards.
The belt sash guide engages in various posi-
tions.
X To lower: press and hold belt sash guide
release :.
X Slide the belt sash guide downwards.
X Release belt sash guide release :and
mak esure that the belt sash guide has
engaged.
Releasing seat belts X
Press release button ?(Ypage 47) and
guide belt tongue ;back towards belt
sash guide :.
! Make sure that the seat belt is fully rolled
up. Otherwise, the seat belt or belt tongue
will be trapped in the door or in the seat
mechanism. This could damage the door,
the door trim panel and the seat belt. Dam-
aged seat belts can no longer fulfil their
protective function and must be replaced.

Belt warning for driver and front
passenger The
7 seat belt warning lam pint he instru-
men tcluster is areminder for all occupants
to fasten their seat belts. It may light up con-
tinuously or flash. In addition ,there ma ybea
warning tone.
The 7 seat belt warning lamp goes out and
the warning tone ceases when the driver and
the front passenge rhave fastened their seat
belt.
For certain countries only: regardless of
whethe rthe driver or the front passenger
hav efastened their seat belts, the 7seat
belt warning lamp lights up for six seconds
after the engine is started. It then goes out if
the driver and the front passenger have fas-
tened their seat belts.

ing road and weather conditions.
Otherwise, the vehicle could go into askid.
ESP ®
cannot reduce the risk of an accident if
you drive too fast. ESP ®
cannot override the
laws of physics.
! Only operate the vehicl efor am aximum
of ten seconds on abrake dynamometer.
Switch off th eignition.
Application of the brakes by ESP ®

! Function or performanc etest sm ay only
be performed on a2-axle dynamometer. If
you wis htooperatethe vehicle on such a
dynamometer, please consult aMercedes-

otherwise damage the driv etrain or the
brake system.

4ETS (Electronic Traction System) i

Traction control is part of ESP ®
.
Traction control brakes the drive wheels indi-
viduall yifthey spin. This enables you to pull
away and accelerate on slipper ysurfaces, for example if the road surface is slippery on one
side .Ina ddition, mor edrive torqu eistrans-
ferre dtot he wheel or wheels with traction.
Traction con trol remains active if you deacti-
vate ESP ®
.
X In appropriate drivin gsituations, activate
the off- road program (Y page 222). G
WARNING
Traction control cannot reduce the risk of an
accident if you drive too fast. Traction control
cannot override the laws of physics.
Off-road 4ETS (Electronic Traction Sys-
tem)
A4 ETS syste mspecifically suited to off -road
ter rain is activated automatically onc ethe off-
roa ddrive progra m(Ypage 22 2)is activated.
Deactivating/activating ESP ® i
Observe the "Important safety notes" sec-
tion (Y page 61).
ESP ®
is activate dautomaticall ywhen the
engin eisstarted.
i Vehicle swith ECO start/stop func tion:
the ECO start/stop func tion switches the
engin eoff automatically when th evehicle
comes to astop. The engine starts auto-
matically when the driver wants to pull
away again. ESP ®
remains in its previously
selected status .Example: if ESP ®
was
deactivated before the engine was
switched off, ESP ®
remains deactivated
whe nthe engin eisswitched on again.
It may be best to deactivate ESP ®
in the fol-
lowing situations:
R when using snow chains

is deactivate dand one or more wheels
start to spin, the ÷ESP®
warning lamp in
the instrument cluster flashes. In such situa-

WARNING
ESP ®
is deactivated if the åwarning lamp
in the instrument cluster lights up continu-
ously when the engine is running.
If the ÷ warning lamp and åwarning
lamp are lit continuously, ESP ®
is not availa-
ble due to amalfunction.
There is an increased risk of your vehicle skid-
ding in certain situations.
You shoul dalway sadapt your driving style to
suit the prevailing road and weather condi-

Off- road ESP® An ESP
®
system specifically suited to off-road
terrain is activated automatically once the off-
road program (Y page 222)isa ctivated. It
intervene swithadelay if there is oversteering
or understeering, thus improvin gtraction.
ESP ®
traile rstabilisation If your vehicle with trailer (vehicle/trailer
combination) begins to lurch, you can only
stabilis ethe vehicle/ trailer combination by
depressing the brake firmly.
In this situation, ESP ®
assists you and can
detect if the vehicle/trailer combination
begins to lurch. ESP ®
slows the vehicle down
by brakin gand limiting the engine output until
the vehicle/traile rcombination has stabi-
lised.
Trailer stabilisation is active abov espeeds of
about 60 km/h. G
WARNING
If road and weather condi tions are poor,
trailer stabilisation will not be able to prevent
the trailer from swerving and will thus be
unable to reduce the risk of an accident .Trail-
ers wit hahigh centr eofgravity can tip over
before ESP ®
can detec tthis.
Trailer stabilisation does not work if ESP ®
is
deactivated or disable dbecause of amal-
function. EBD (electronic brake force distribu-
tion)
i Observe the "Important safety notes" sec-

EBD monitors and control sthe brake pres-
sur eonthe rea rwheels to improv edriving

The radar sensor system must be switched off
using the on-boar dcomputer in the vicinit yof
radio telescop efacilities in the following vehi-

R vehicles without COMAND Online and nav-
igation
R vehicles without Audio 20 and Becker ®

Information about switching off the rad ar sen-
so rs ystem using the on-board computer can
be found in the "On-board computer and dis-
plays “section (Y page 249).
For PRE- SAFE®
Brake to assist you whe ndriv-
ing ,the radar sensor system must be
switc hed on (Y page 249) an dbeopera-
tional.

the radar sensors checked at aqualified spe-
cialist workshop. This also applie stoc olli-
sions at slow speeds where ther eisnovisible
damage to the fron tofthe vehicle. STEE
RCONTROL
The steering assistan tSTEE RCONTROL helps
you by transmittin ganoticeable steering
force to the steering wheel in the direction
required for vehicle stabilisation.
This steering assistance is provided in partic-
ular if:
R both right wheels or both left wheels ar eon
aw et or slippery road surface when you
brake
R the vehicle starts to skid
You have control over the steerin gatall
times. G
WARNING
If there is an ESP ®
malfunction, you will not
receiv eany steering assistance from the
STEER CONTROL. The steering continues to
function with steering assistance. Anti-theft systems
Immobiliser
The immobilise rprevents your vehicl efrom
being starte dwithout the correct key.
X To activate with the key: removethe key
from the ignition lock.
X To activate wit hKEYLESS-GO: switch the
ignition off and open the driver' sdoor.
X To deactivate: switchont he ignition.
i The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you star tthe engine. ATA (Anti-Thef
tAlarm system)
Av isual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is prime dand you ope n:
R ad oor
R the vehicle with the emergency key ele-
ment
R the tailgate
R the bonnet
The alar misnot switched off ,even if you
close th eopen door that has triggere dit, for

To prime: lock the vehicle with the key or
KEYLESS-GO.
Indicator lamp :flashes. The alarm sys-
tem is primed after approximately 15 sec-
onds.
X To deactivate: unlock the vehicle with the
