Useful information
i This Owner's Manual describes all models
and all standard and optional equipment
available to your vehicle at the time of pub-
lication of the Owner's Manual. Country-
specific deviations are possible. Please
note that your vehicle may not be equipped
with all features described. This also
applies to safety-relevan tsystems and
functions.

Key functions
Locking an dunlocking centrally The key centrally locks/unlocks:
R
the doors
R the boot lid/tailgate
R the fuel filler flap G
WARNING
Only for the United Kingdom: if the vehicle
has been locked with the key, the double lock
function is activated as standard. It is then not
possible to open the doors from inside the
vehicle.
Therefore, do not leave any people behind in
the vehicle, particularly children, elderly peo-
ple or people in need of special assistance if
the vehicle has been locked with the key. As
a result, they may not be able to free them-
selves in the event of an emergency. As a
result, they could be seriously or even fatally
injured by prolonged exposure to extremely
high or low temperatures, for example. In this
case, rescuing people from outside the vehi-
cle is difficult.
Deactivate the interior motion sensor before
you lock the vehicle with the key. The doors
can then be opened from the inside after the vehicle has been locked from the outside with
the key. G
WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open a door from inside the vehicle at any
time, even if it has been locked
R start the vehicle using akey which has been
left in the vehicle
R release the parking brake
They could thereby endanger themselves and
others. Never leave children unsupervised in
the vehicle. Always take the key with you
when leaving the vehicle, even if you are only
leaving it for a short time. G
WARNING
If a key ring is too heavy or too large, the
weight acting on the key could cause it to turn
in the ignition lock or catch on the steering
wheel. This could cause the engine to be
switched off suddenly. You may lose control
of the vehicle and cause an accident. Do not
attach any heavy or large key rings to the key
that is inserted in the ignition. :

When unlocking, the turn signals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
When it is dark, the surround lighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Y page 241).84
KeyOpening and closing
If you activate the acoustic locking confirma-
tion function, you will hear the following,
depending on the date of production of the
vehicle:
R an acoustic signal when locking
or
R one acoustic signal when unlocking and
three when locking.
The audible signal can be activated and deac-
tivated using the on-board computer
(Y page 242).
X To unlockc entrally:press the%but-
ton.
If you do not open th evehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the anti-thef tsystem is primed again.
X To lock centrally: press the&button. KEYLESS-GO
You can start, loc korunlock the vehicle using
KEYLESS-GO .To do this, you only need carry
the key with you. When you touch the surface
of the sensors on the vehicle's outside door
handles, KEYLESS-GO establishes a radio
connection between the vehicle and the key.
When the engine is started and whilst you are
driving, KEYLESS-GO also checks whether a
valid key is in the vehicle by periodically
establishing radio contact.
When locking or unlockin gwith KEYLESS-GO,
the distance between the key and the door
handle you wish to lock or unloc kmust not
be greater than 1 m. X
To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner
surface of the door handle.
X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor sur-
face :.
X Convenience closing feature: touch
recessed sensor surface ;for an exten-
ded period (Y page 98).
If you pull on the handle of the boot lid/tail-
gate, only the boot/luggage compartmen tof
the vehicle is unlocked. Changing the settings of the locking
system
You can change the setting of the locking
syste mins uch a way that only the driver's
door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked. This
is useful if you frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the %and& buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp (Y page 87)
flashes twice.
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the vehi-
cle, pressing the &or% buttonlocks
or unlocks the vehicle.
The key now functions as follows:
X To unlock the driver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the%but-
ton twice.
X To lock centrally: press the&button. Key

The KEYLESS-GO function is changed as fol-
lows:
X
To unlock the driver's door: touch the
inner surface of the door handle on the
driver's door.
X To unlock centrally: touch the inner sur-
face of the door handle on the front-
passenger door or the rear door.
X To lock centrally: touch the outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles. Restoring the factory settings
X Press the %and& buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp flashes twice. Emergency key element
General notes If the vehicle can no longer be locked or
unlocked with the key, use the emergency
key element.
If you use the emergenc
ykey element to
unlock and open the driver's door or the boot
lid/tailgate, the anti-thef talarm system will
be triggered (Y page 80).
There are several ways to tur noff the alarm:
X To turn the alarm off with the key: press
the % or& button on the key.
or
X Insert the key into the ignition lock.
or
X To deactivate the alarm with KEYLESS-
GO: press the Start/Stop button in the igni-
tion lock. The key must be in the vehicle.
or
X Lock or unlock the vehicle using KEYLESS-
GO. The key must be outside the vehicle.
If you unlock the vehicle using the emergency
key element, the fuel filler flap will not be
unlocked automatically. X
To unlock the fuel filler flap: insert the
key in the ignition lock.
Removing the emergency key element X
Push release catch :in the direction of
the arrow and at the same time, remove
emergency key element ;from the key. Key battery
Important safety notes Have the batteries changed at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop. G
WARNING
Batteries are toxic and contain caustic sub-
stances. For this reason, keep batteries out of
the reach of children.
If a battery has been swallowed, visi tadoctor
immediately. H
Environmental note Batteries contain pollutants.
It is illegal to dispose of them
with the household rubbish.
They must be collected sep-
arately and disposed of in an
environmentally responsible
recycling system. Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally responsible
manner. Take discharged
batteries to a qualified spe-

KeyOpening and closing
On vehicles with a luxury multifunction steer-
ing wheel, you can also activate and deacti-
vate the automatic locking via the on-board
computer (Y page 242). Unlocking the driver's door (emer-
gencyk
ey element)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergency key element.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the driver's door, the anti-
theft alarm system will be triggered
(Y page 80).
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 86).
X Inser tthe emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key. Locking the vehicle (emergency key
element)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
key, use the emergency key element. X
Open the driver's door.
X Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the boot lid/tailgate.
X Press the locking button (Y page 90).
X Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rear doors
are still visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary.
X Close the driver's door.
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 86).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver's door as far as it will go. X
Turn the emergency key element clockwise
as far as it will go to position 1.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element anti-clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Make sure that the doors and the boot lid/
tailgate are locked.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key.
i If you lock the vehicle as described above,
the fuel filler flap is not locked. The anti-
theft alarm system is not primed. Doors

Important safety notes
Do not leave the key in the boot/luggage
compartment. You could otherwise lock your-
sel fout. G
WARNING
Exhaust fumes could ente rthe vehicle interior
if the engine is running and the boot lid/tail-
gate is open. This could poison you. There-
fore, you should make sure that the boot lid/
tailgate is always closed when the engine is
running.
! The boot lid/tailgate swings upwards and
to the rear when opened. Therefore, make
sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behind the boot lid/tailgate.
i You will find details on the boot lid/tail-
gate opening dimensions in the Technical
data section (Y page 386).
On the Saloon, the boot lid can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R opened automatically from outside
R opened automatically from inside
R locked separately
R unlocked with the emergency key element
On the Estate without EASY-PACK tail-
gate, the tailgate can be:
R opened and closed manually from outside
R unlocked from the inside with the emer-
gency key element
On the Estate with EASY-PACK tailgate,
you can:
R close the tailgate manually from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
R limit the opening angle of the tailgate
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency key element Opening/closing manually
Opening X
Press the %button on the key. Handle (example: Estate)
X Pull handle :.
X Raise the boot lid/tailgate.
Estate with the EASY-PACK tailgate: if you
pull handle :and keep it in this position, you
can open the tailgate manually.Ify ou release
the handle, the tailgate opens automatically.
Closing G
WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
as you close the tailgate. Recess (example: Estate)92
Boot/luggage compartmentOpening and closing

Pull the boot lid/tailgate down using
recess :.
X Estate: push the tailgate closed from out-
side the vehicle.
X If necessary, lock the vehicle with
the & button on the key (Y page 84) or
with KEYLESS-GO (Y page 85).
i If a KEYLESS-GO key is detected in the
boot/luggage compartment, the boot lid/
tailgate will not lock.
Saloon: the boot lid then opens again. Opening/closing automatically from
outside

ing procedure, press the closing button on the
tailgate again or pull the handle on the outside
of the tailgate.
! The boot lid/tailgate swings upwards and
to the rear when opened. Therefore, make
sure that there is sufficient clearance
above and behind the boot lid/tailgate.
i You will find details on the boot lid/tail-
gate opening dimensions in the Technical
data section (Y page 386).
Opening You can open the boot lid/tailgate automati-
cally with the key or the handle in the boot
lid/tailgate.
Estate with EASY-PACK tailgate:
open/
close the tailgate fully using the automatic
function after stopping the tailgate in an inter-
mediate position.
X Press and hold the Fbutton on the key
until the boot lid/tailgate opens.
or
X If the boot lid/tailgate is unlocked, pull the
handle of the boot lid/tailgate and let it go
again immediately.
Closing You can close the tailgate automatically using
the closing button

WARNING
Monitor the tailgate closing procedure to
make sure that nobody can become trapped.
Release the tailgate's remote operating but-
ton to stop the closing procedure.
Saloon: you can open the boot lid from the
driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary
and unlocked.
Estate with EASY-PACK tailgate: you can
open/close the tailgate from the driver's seat
when the vehicle is stationary and unlocked. Remote operating switch (example: Estate)
X To open: press the upper section of remote
operating switch :for the tailgate/boot
lid until the tailgate/boot lid opens.
X To close (Estate): turn the key to position
1 or 2in the ignition lock.
X Press the lower section of tailgate remote
operating switch :until the tailgate is
closed. Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate (Estate)
Important safety notes You can limit the opening angle of the tail-
gate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 20 cm
before the stop.
Limiting the opening angle can be useful if
there is not sufficien
tclearance above the
open tailgate, for example.
! Make sure there is sufficien tclearance to
open the tailgate fully when setting the
opening angle. The tailgate could otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the opening angle
outside.
Activating X
To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedure at the
desired position: press the closing button94
Boot/luggage compartmentOpening and closing
(Y
page 93) in the tailgate or pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again.
X To store the position: press and hold the
closing button in the tailgate until you hear
a short tone.
The opening angle limiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening.
i If you wish to open the tailgate fully, pull
the handle of the tailgate again after it has
stopped automatically. This does not
delete the stored position.
Deactivating X
Press and hold the closing button
(Y page 93) in the tailgate until you hear
two short tones. Locking the boot separately (Saloon)
In some countries, you can lock the boot sep-
arately. If you then unlock the vehicle cen-
trally, the boot remains locked and cannot be
opened.
X Close the boot lid.
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 86). X
Insert the emergency key element into the
boot lid lock as far as the stop.
X Turn the emergency key element clockwise
from position 1to position 2. X
Remove the emergency key element.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key. Unlocking the boot (Saloon)
! The boot lid swings upwards when
opened. Therefore, make sure that there is
sufficient clearance above the boot lid.
If the boot cannot be unlocked with the key
or KEYLESS-GO, use the emergency key ele-
ment.
If you use the emergency key element to
unlock and open the boot lid, the anti-theft
alarm system will be triggered (Y page 80).
X Take the emergency key element out of the
key (Y page 86).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
boot lid lock as far as the stop. X
Turn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise from position 1as far as it will
go to position 2.
The boot is unlocked.
X Turn the emergency key element back to
position 1and remove it.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key. Tailgate emergency release (Estate)
If the tailgate can no longer be opened from
outside the vehicle, use the emergency
release on the inside of the tailgate. Boot/luggage compartment
