Sensing System for
Passenger Airbag
The passenger sensing system,
if equipped, turns off the right
front passenger frontal airbag
under certain conditions. The driver
airbags, seat‐mounted side impact
airbags and roof‐rail airbags are not
affected by this.
If the vehicle has one of the
indicators pictured in the following
illustrations, then the vehicle has a
passenger sensing system for the
right front passenger position unless
there is an airbag off switch located
in the glove box.
If there is an airbag off switch, the
vehicle does not have a passenger
sensing system. SeeAirbag On-Off
Switch on page 3‑37 for more
information. The passenger airbag status
indicator will be visible on the
overhead console when the
vehicle is started.
United States
Canada and Mexico
See Passenger Sensing System on
page 3‑40 for important information.

services and system limitations,
see the OnStar Owner's Guide in
the glove box.
OnStar service is subject to the
OnStar Terms and Conditions
included in the OnStar Glove
Box Kit.
OnStar service requires wireless
communication networks and the
Global Positioning System (GPS)
satellite network. Not all OnStar
services are available everywhere
or on all vehicles at all times.OnStar service can’t work unless
the vehicle is in a place where
OnStar has an agreement with
a wireless service provider for
service in that area, and the
wireless service provider has
coverage, network capacity,
reception, and technology
compatible with OnStar service.
Service involving location
information about the vehicle
can’t work unless GPS signals
are available, unobstructed,
and compatible with the OnStar
hardware. The vehicle has to have
a working electrical system and
adequate battery power for the
OnStar equipment to operate.
OnStar service may not work if the
OnStar equipment isn’t properly
installed or you haven’t maintained
it and the vehicle is in good working
order and in compliance with
all government regulations.

records information after a
crash. SeeVehicle Data

Airbag On-Off Switch
If one of the switches pictured in the
following illustrations is located in
the glove box, the vehicle has an
airbag on-off switch that you can
use to manually turn on or off the
right front passenger airbag.
United States
Canada and Mexico
If the vehicle does not have an
airbag off switch, it may have
a passenger sensing system.
See Passenger Sensing System on
page 3‑40.

To turn the right front passenger
airbag on again, insert the ignition
key into the switch, push in, and

The right front passenger frontal
airbag is now enabled (may inflate).
See Airbag On-Off Light on
page 5‑21 for more information.
Passenger Sensing

If the vehicle has one of the
indicators pictured in the following
illustrations, then the vehicle has
a passenger sensing system for
the right front passenger position,
unless there is an airbag off switch
located in the glove box. If there
is an airbag off switch, the vehicle

on page 3‑37 for more information.
The passenger airbag status
indicator will be visible on the
overhead console when the
vehicle is started.
In addition, if the vehicle has a
passenger sensing system for the
right front passenger position, the
label on the vehicle's sun visors
refers to “ADVANCED AIRBAGS”.

3-56 Seats and Restraints
Where to Put the
Restraint
According to accident statistics,
children and infants are safer
when properly restrained in a child
restraint system or infant restraint
system secured in a rear seating
position.
We recommend that children and
child restraints be secured in a rear
seat, including: an infant or a child
riding in a rear-facing child restraint;
a child riding in a forward-facing
child seat; an older child riding in a
booster seat; and children, who are
large enough, using safety belts.
If a child restraint is secured in the
right front passenger seat, and the
vehicle has a switch in the glove
box to manually turn off the right
front passenger airbag, seeAirbag
On-Off Switch on page 3‑37 and
Securing Child Restraints (Rear
Seat Position) on page 3‑66 or
Securing Child Restraints (Right
Front Seat Position) on page 3‑69
or Securing Child Restraints (Center Front Seat Position) on page 3‑78
for more information, including
important safety information.
A label on the sun visor says,
“Never put a rear-facing child seat in
the front.”
This is because the risk
to the rear-facing child is so great,
if the airbag deploys.
{WARNING
A child in a rear-facing child
restraint can be seriously
injured or killed if the right
front passenger airbag inflates.
This is because the back of the
rear-facing child restraint would
be very close to the inflating
airbag. A child in a forward-facing
child restraint can be seriously
injured or killed if the right front
passenger airbag inflates and the
passenger seat is in a forward
position.
(Continued)
WARNING (Continued)
Even if the passenger sensing
system or airbag switch
has turned off the right front
passenger frontal airbag, no
system is fail-safe. No one can
guarantee that an airbag will
not deploy under some unusual
circumstance, even though it is
turned off.
Secure rear-facing child
restraints in a rear seat, even if
the airbag is off. If you secure a
forward-facing child restraint in
the right front seat, always move
the front passenger seat as far
back as it will go. It is better to
secure the child restraint in a
rear seat.

3-72 Seats and Restraints
If the vehicle is equipped with
a passenger sensing system,
and when the passenger sensing
system has turned off the right front
passenger frontal airbag, the off
indicator in the passenger airbag
status indicator should light and
stay lit when you start the vehicle.
If a child restraint has been installed
and the on indicator is lit, see
“If the On Indicator is Lit for a Child
Restraint”underPassenger Sensing
System on page 3‑40 for more
information.
To remove the child restraint,
unbuckle the vehicle safety belt and
let it return to the stowed position.
If the top tether is attached to a
top tether anchor, disconnect it.With Airbag Off Switch
This vehicle has airbags. A rear
seat is a safer place to secure
a forward-facing child restraint.
See Where to Put the Restraint on
page 3‑56.
There may be a switch in the glove
box that you can use to turn off the
right front passenger frontal airbag.
See Airbag On-Off Switch on
page 3‑37 for more information,
including important safety
information.
A label on the sun visor says,
“Never put a rear-facing child seat
in the front unless airbag is off.” This
is because the risk to the rear-facing
child is so great, if the airbag
deploys.{WARNING
A child in a rear-facing child
restraint can be seriously
injured or killed if the right
front passenger airbag inflates.
This is because the back of the
rear-facing child restraint would
be very close to the inflating
airbag. A child in a forward-facing
child restraint can be seriously
injured or killed if the right front
passenger airbag inflates and the
passenger seat is in a forward
position.

{WARNING
If the airbag readiness light stays
on after the vehicle is started or
comes on while driving, it means
the airbag system might not be
working properly. The airbags in
the vehicle might not inflate in a
crash, or they could even inflate
without a crash. To help avoid
injury, have the vehicle serviced
right away.
If there is a problem with the airbag
system, a Driver Information Center
(DIC) message can also come on.
See Airbag System Messages on
page 5‑48 for more information.
Airbag On-Off Light
If the vehicle has an airbag on-off
switch, it also has a passenger
airbag status indicator located in the
overhead console.
United States
Canada and Mexico
When the vehicle is started, the
passenger airbag status indicator
will light ON and OFF, or the symbol
for on and off, will light for several
seconds as a system check. Then, after several more seconds,
the status indicator ON or OFF,
or either the on or off symbol, will
light to let you know the status of
the right front passenger frontal
airbag.
When the right front passenger
airbag is manually turned off using
the airbag on-off switch in the glove
box, the indicator light OFF or the
off symbol will come on and stay on
as a reminder that the airbag has
been turned off. This light will go off
when the airbag has been turned
on. See
Airbag On-Off Switch on
page 3‑37 for more information,
including important safety
information.
