down over the wheel bolt cap until it engages.
- Pull on the properly engaged
plastic clip to extract the cap

Refitting
- Place the caps over the wheel bolts and push them back in.
The caps are there to protect and keep the wheel bolts clean. •

must use a special adopter .

- Loosen or tighten the wheel bolt=> page 276.
To remove the cap* @, make sure the plastic cl ip is pushed in as far
in as possible until it lines up with the edge of the cap.
We recommend you keep the whee l bolt adapter in the tool kit.
The
code number o f the wheel bolt lock is stamped on the fron t side
of the adapter. You will need this number in order to get a replace
ment from your authorized Audi dealer .

he jack shou ld be posi tioned appro ximately 6 in . (15 cm) behind the
front wheel or 10 i n. ( 25 cm) in fron t of t he rea r w heel.
An
un stable surface u nder the jack can cause the vehicle to slip off
the jack. Always provide a firm base for the jack on the grou nd .
If
necessary pla ce a st urdy boar d or sim ilar su ppo rt unde r the jack. On
hard , slippery surf aces (s uch as ti les) use a rubber mat or s imilar to
preven t the j ack from sli pping =>& .
& WARNING
• You or your passengers could be injured while changing a
wheel if you do not follow safety precautions:
-Mounting the jack under the vehicle at any other place than
indicated above may damage the vehicle or may result in
personal injuries.
- A soft o r unstable surface under the j ack may cause the
vehicle to slip off the ja ck . Alway s provide a firm base for the
jack on the ground.
If necessary, use a sturdy board under the
jack.
- On hard , slippery surface (such as tiles ) use a rubbe r mat or
similar to prevent the ja ck from slipping.
• To help prevent injury to yourself and your pa ssengers:
- Do not raise the vehicle until you are sure the j ack i s securely
engaged.
- Passengers must not remain
in the vehicle when it is ja cked
up.
- Make su re that passengers wait in a safe place away from the
vehicle and well away from the roadway and traffic.
- Make sure jack position is correct, adjust as necessary and
then continue to raise the jack. •

• The wheel bo lts shou ld be clean and easy to turn. Check for dirt
and corrosion on the mat ing surfa ces of both the whee l and the hu b.
Remove all d irt from these s urfaces before remounting the whee l.•
Tires with unidirectional tread design
Tires with unidirectional tread design must be mounted
with their t read pattern pointed in the right direction .
Using a spare tire w ith a tread pattern intended for
u se in a specific direction
When using a spare tire w ith a tread pattern intended for use in a
spec ific direction, please note t he fo llow ing:
• The direct ion of rotation is marked by an arrow on the side of the
tire.
• If the spare tire has to be installed in the incorrect direction in the
event of a flat ti re, use the spare tire only temporari ly since the tire
wi ll not be able to achieve its optimum pe rformance characterist ics
with regard to aq uaplaning, noise and wear .
• We recommend that particular attention be paid to this fact
during wet wea ther and that you adj ust you r speed to match road
conditions .
• Rep lace t he flat tire w ith a new one and have it ins talled on your
vehicle as soon as poss ible to restore the handling advantages of a
properly pointed direction -dependent tire .•

Notes on wheel change
Please read the information =:> page 257, "New tires and rep lacing
ti res and wheels" if yo u are go ing to use a sp are t ire wh ich is diffe rent
from the tires on your vehicle.
After you change a tire:
• Che ck the tire pres sure on the spare immediately after
mounting .
• Have the wh eel bolt tight ening t orque ch ecked with a torque
wrench a s soon as poss ible by your authorized Audi de aler or a qual
ified servi ce station.
• On steel and allo y wheel rim s, the wheel bolts are co rrectl y
tightened with a torque of 90 ft lb (1 20 Nm ).
• If you not ice while ch anging a tire that the wheel bolt s are
corroded and difficult to turn, then they should be r eplaced before
yo u che ck the tightening torque.
• Repla ce the flat tire with a new one and have it installed on your
vehicle a s soon a s po ssible . Remount the wheel c over.
Until then, drive with e xtra care and at reduced speed s.
& WARNING
• If you ar e going to equip your vehicle w ith tire s or rims which
differ from tho se which were factor y installed, then be sure t o
read the information =:>

and wheels ".
• Alway s make sure the damaged wh eel or even a flat t ire and

A problem in the electrical system may be caused by a
blown fuse .

- Turn off the ignition and the affected electrical
consumers .
- Carefully pry the fuse cover off the instrument panel using the ignition key or a screwdriver=> fig. 193 .
- Check the following table to see which fuse belongs to the
consumer =>
page 282, "Fuse Location, Instrument Panel
left".
- Remove the clamp from the rear side of the fuse cover
=> fig. 193 .
- Remove the fuse using the clamp and replace the blown fuse with an identical new one .
- Firmly snap the cover back onto the instrument panel
face .

consumers.
- Check the following table to see which fuse belongs to the
consumer =>

- Unlatch the fuse cover, push the two slides forward => fig. 194.

ri zed Audi dealer replace burned out bulbs for you.
It is becoming increasingly more and more difficu lt to rep lace vehicle
light bulbs since in many cases, ot her parts of the car must first be
removed before you are able to get to the bu lb. This app lies espec ially
to the l igh t bu lbs in the front of your car whi ch you can o nly rea ch
through the engine compartment .
Sheet metal and bu lb holders can have sharp edges that can ca use
serious cuts, and parts must be correctly taken apart and the n prop
erly put back together to he lp prevent b reakage of parts and long
term damage from wate r that can enter housings that have not been
p roperly resealed.
For your safety, we recommend that you have you r authorized Audi
deale r replace any bu lbs fo r you, since your dealer has the proper
too ls, the cor rec t bu lbs and the expertise .
Gas dis charge lamp s (Xenon lights)* :
Due to the high electrical voltage, have the bulbs replaced by a qual
ified technician. Headlights with Xe non light can be iden tified by the
high voltage sticker.

Safety first

Improper handling of the jumper cables can lead to an explosion
of the battery and severe injurie s. To reduce the ri sk of injury, note
the following:
• The section s of the terminal clamps that are not insul ated
must not touch each other. In addition, the cable clamped to the
battery' s po sitive terminal must not come in contact with electri
cally connected parts of the veh icle -danger of short circu it!
• Route the jumper cable so that it cannot catch in any rotating
parts in the engine compartment .
• Do not bend over the batteries -danger of chemical burns!
• The battery cell locking screws must be tightened securely.
• Keep ignition source s (open flame , burning cigarettes, etc.)
away from the batteries -danger of explosion!
• Do not clamp the minus cable to parts of the fuel system or the
brake lines.

The follow ing informat ion is to be used by commercial tow truck
oper ator s w ho know how to oper ate th eir equipmen t sa fe ly.
• Never tow your Audi, towing will cause damage to the engine
and transmission.
• Never wrap the safety chains or winch cables around the brake
lines.
• To prevent unnecessary damage, your Audi must be transported
with a car carrier (flat bed truck ).
• To load the vehicle on to the flat bed, use the towing loop found
in the vehicle tools and attach to the front or rear anchorage
=> page 290 and=> page 290 . ..
