Driver information display
Introduction
General notes
The driver information display inside the instrument
cluster provides you, the driver, with much useful infor­
mation .

Informat ion from the Driver Information System is shown in the
display in the center of the instrument cluster.
When you tu rn on the ig nition and while you are driving, some func­
tions and vehicle components are scanned for their operating status. Malfunctions or required service procedures are signalled audibly and
shown by red and yellow lighted symbols and reminders to the driver
in the display.
Th e d river is also shown information about radio and CD operat ion
and directions for the navigation system. You can find additional
information on these subjects in the MMI manual.

Memories
The trip computer is equipped with two fully automatic
memories as well as an efficiency program*.

You can switch between the trip computer 1 and 2 and the efficiency
program* by pressing the [
RESET] button®=> fig. 17.
You can tell which memory level is currently active by the number or
the sign in the display=> fig. 16. The data from the single-trip
memory (memory level 1) is being displayed if a 1 appears in the
display . If a
2 is shown, then the data from the total-trip memory is
being displayed (memory level 2). The fuel pump nozzle

Single-trip memory (Trip computer 1)
The single-trip memory stores the trip information from the time the
ignition is turned on until it is turned off. If the trip is continued
within 2 hours from the time the ignition was turned off, the new
data will be included in the calculation of the current trip informa­
tion. If the trip is interrupted for
more than 2 hours the memory is
reset automatically.
Total-trip memory (Trip computer 2)
Unlike the single-trip memory, the total-trip memory is not reset
automatically. This permits you to evaluate your driving data for the
entire period between manual resets.

Operation
The trip computer is controlled by two switches on the
windshield wiper lever .

- To display the trip computer memory levels, press the
[ RESET) button ®=> fig. 17 repeatedly until the desired
memory level is shown in the display.
- To display trip information within a memory level, press
the top or bottom part of the function selection switch @.
The trip computer will not operate unless the ignition is on. When you
turn on the ignition, the function that was in use when you last turned
the ignition off will be displayed.
In addition to information on the trip computer (trip computer 1, 2
and efficiency program*, the digital speedometer and information
regarding the navigation system* can also be displayed. To sw itch the
display between the different information, tap the

Following other v ehicles too clo sely increases the risk of a crash
and serious per sonal injury.
• Following other vehicles too closely, particularly at higher
speeds in crea ses the ri sk of collisions and seriou s personal injury.
• Setting short distances to the traffic ahe ad reduces the time
and distance avail able to bring your vehicl e to a safe stop and
makes it even more necessary to pay close attent io n to t raffic.
• Always select a speed and distance to traffic ahead that is safe
and appropriate under the pre vailing traffic, road , weathe r and
lighting conditions.
• Never rely on the distance control feature of ACC alone to
prevent rear-end collisions . Always be pr epared to brake and take
evasive action to a void collisions and other accident situations.
• Never allow the closing sp eed b etween you and other vehicles
to be so high that the Adapti ve Cruise Control may not be able to
s low your vehicle safely . If closing speed is too high, you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the r isk of a rear -end crash.
• Always select a greater following di stance to the vehicle ahead
on wet roads than on dry roads.

Important information concerning vehicle operation w ith Adaptive

is indicated in the speedometer (LED lights around the edge).

Scroll throug h the available informa tion displays by briefly tapping
the
[ RESE T] button at the end of the windshie ld wiper lever . You can
select information from the tr ip comp uter, navigation sys tem * or
Adaptive Cr uise Control.

• Vehicle outline : Open road, no vehicle ahead .
• White vehicle : A vehicle is detected ahead.
• Red vehicle : Request for driver to ass ume control.
® Distance
Us ing the a rrows and scale, you can det ect how far it is to the vehi cle
in front of you.
• Open road : No ar row app ears when the ve hicle is o n an o pen road
and there is no ve hicle ahead.
• Driving in t raffic : If a vehicle is detected ahead, the arrow moves
on t he sc ale. The g ree n area represents the distan ce set . When
approaching slow ly, the arrow moves from the
gray zone to the green
zone on the scale .
• Driver intervention prompt: When appro aching rapid ly, the
arrow serves as an early warn ing signa l.
If the distance selected is
excee ded or poss ibly no t reache d, t he arrow moves in to the
red zon e
on t he scale. In certain dr iving s ituations , you as the driver wi ll have

While the vehicle is being raised or lowered, the target level is indi­
cated by an arrow © next to the corresponding segment. The arrow
disappears again when the vehicle is at the target level.
Limitations to MMI settings
Please note that not every driving mode can be selected in every
dr iving s ituation . For example , it is not poss ible to switch to "lift"
mode at speeds above 12 mph (20 km/h) . This mode is then shown
greyed out in the MMI Display .
The vehicle can on ly be lowered when
all of the veh icle's doors are
closed.
If one doo r is open, all driving modes whose level setting is
below the current vehicle level appear greyed out in the MMI Display.
If a door is opened whi le the vehicle is being lowered , the lowering
process is interrupted until all doo rs are closed again.
I f the system is temporarily unavailable due to, for instance, an
empty compressed air tank, the driving modes that cannot be set
appear
greyed out in the MMI Display . As soon as the system is avail ­
able aga in, the driv ing modes can once more be selected in the
display .

• For additional information on the driving modes=> page 179,
"Chassis controls".
• When the compressed air tank is empty , the compressor can be
switched on by starting the engine. The Adaptive Air Suspension is
once again available, after waiting a few minutes.
• T o prevent overload, the system switches off temporarily if
severa l adjustments are made in a row. The Adaptive A ir Suspens ion
is once again available, afte r waiting a few minutes. •

Repeated, br ief tapping of the [ RESET] button on the windshield
wiper lever allows you to selec t whether information concerning the
trip computer, digita l tachometer, navigation* or "Adaptive Air
Suspension " is to appear in the instrument cluster display .
Display of the Adaptive Air Suspension is automatic when the offroad
or lift mode is se lected, or when the vehicle is automat ically lowered
in lift mode.
