Airbag system !.!r
This warning/indicator light monitors the airbag and the
tensioner systems.
The !! r warning light i llum inates for a few seconds each time you
switch on the ign ition.
If the
! !r warning light does not go out, or if it illum inates while you
are d riving, or i f it s tarts to flash, t hen there is a m alfu nct io n some­
where in the system . If the light does not illum inate when you switch
on t he ignition, this also means there is a malfunction.
& WARNING
If you have a malfunction in the airbag sy stem, contact your
authorized Audi dealer immediately. Otherwise the airbag or the
belt tensioner ma y not work properly in an accident. •
Generator 0
This warning/indicator light detects a malfunction in the
generator or in the vehicle 's electrical syst em .
Th e D war ning/in dica tor lig ht ill uminates when you swit ch on t he
ign ition and must go out a fter the engine has started.
If the D war ning/ind ic at or ligh t illumina tes whi le you are d riving,
you shou ld contact you r auth o rized Audi dealer . Since the ve hicle
battery is discharging, you shou ld switch off any unnecessary elec­
t rical consume rs (fo r example , the air condi tioner) .•

This warn ing/indic ato r light remind s you t o put on yo ur
safety belt.
The 4'-wa rning/ind icator light illuminates when the ignition is
s w itched on to re mi nd the driver and (o n USA models only) any fro nt
passenger to put on the sa fety belt. Additionally, an acoustic warn ing
(gong) will a lso s oun d.

Brake system
BRAKE (USA)/ (CD) (Canada)
T his warn in g/in dic ato r ligh t ill umin ates whe n t he br ake
flui d level is t oo lo w o r w he n t here is a ma lfunction in the
AB S, or whe n the pa rking b rake is s et.
T he light illuminates w hen the ign it io n is tu rned on . It goes out after
t he engine has bee n sta rted and th e p arki ng bra ke is f ully re le ase d.
T hi s indicates that t he bra ke warning light is functioning properly.
If the brake warning light does not light up when the engine is
cranking or the parking brake is appl ied , there may be a malfunc­
tion in the electrical system. In this case , contact your Audi dealer .
If the ABS f ails, the A BS war ning/ indicato r light 5 (USA
models)/ (Canada mode ls) flashes toget her w it h the brake system
w ar ning/indica tor ligh t=> & .
(USA models): If the warning light
BRAKE and the warni ng lig ht illu­
m inate together, immediate ly contact your authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop to have all brake pads inspected=>
page 35.
Whe n the light comes on, an aud ible warn ing si gna l is also given .
Parking brake set
The BRAKE warning/indicator light i lluminates when the par king brake

& WARNING
• If your vehicle should break down for mechanical or other
reasons , pa rk at a safe distance from mo ving traffic, turn off the
engine and turn on the hazard warning lights=>

• Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant
escaping .
• The engin e compartment of any vehicle i s a dangerou s ar ea .
Before you p erform any work in the engine compartment , turn off
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning sti ckers
=> page 218 , "Engine compartment ".

Do not continue driving if the -¥- symbol illuminates . There is a
ma lf u nction in the engine coo ling sys tem -yo u could damage your
eng ine. •
Engine oil pressure malfunction ~
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol requires
immediate se rv ice o r repair.
If the 9=r. symbo l app ears in the d is pl ay a nd flash es, th e oil
p ressure is to o lo w . In add ition to the sym bol, the f ollow ing
messag e al so a pp ea rs in the dis play :
Switch off engine and check oil level
- P ull off the road a nd stop t he ve hicle.

If the eng ine oi l leve l is too low , top off oil to t he p roper level

If the 't'!::;r. symbol starts flashing again even thoug h the engine oil
level checks O K on t he d ipstick,
do not start driving again and do not
let the engine run at idle .
Instead, contact you r authorized Audi
dealer fo r assis tance.
[ i ] Tips
• The engine oil pressure symbol 'I=:?: is not an indic ato r for a low
engine oil level. Do not rely on it . Instead , check the oil level in your
engine at regular intervals , preferably each t ime you refuel, and
always before going on a long tr ip .
• The yellow oil level warning indication requires oil refill or
workshop service without de lay . Do not wait until the red oil pre s­
s ure warning symbol~ starts to flash before you respond to the
low oil level warning _, . By then, your engine may already have
s uffered serious damage. •

T he indica tor lig ht illuminates if you do no t press t he cl utch pedal
when starting the engine . For safety reasons, the engine will only
sta rt when the clut ch pedal is pressed. •

General recommendations
Why is your seat adjustment so important?
The safety belts and the airbag system can only provide
maximum protection if the front seats are correctly
adju sted.
Th ere are several dif ferent ways you can ad just the d river's sea t and
t he front passenger's seat so that it confo rms to your body size .
It is
especially important t hat the seat be adjusted properly so that:
• you can easily and quickly reach a ll the switc hes and contro ls in the
ins trumen t pa nel
• your body is properly supported thus reducing phys ica l stress and
fatigue
• the safety be lts and airbag system can offer maximum protection

In the follow ing chapters, you will see exactly how you can best adjust
your sea ts .
Th ere are special regulations a nd instr uctions for install ing a child
safety seat on the front passenger 's seat. Always heed the informa ­
tion regarding child safety p rovided in=>
page 167, "Child Safety ".
& WARNING
Incorrect seating posit ion of the driver and all other passengers
can result in seriou s personal injury.
• Always keep your feet on the floor when the vehicle is in
motion -never put your feet on top of the instrument panel, out
of the window or on top of the seat cushion! This applies especially
to the passengers. If your seating po sition is incorrect you
increase the ri sk of injury in the case of sudden braking or an acci-

dent . If the airbag inflates and the seating position is incorrect
this could result in per sonal injury or even death .
• It is important for both the dri ver and front passenger to keep
a distance of at least 10 inches (25 cm) between themselves and
the steer ing whee l and /or instrument panel. If you're sitting any
closer than this , the airbag system cannot protect you properly. In
addition to thi s, the front seats and head restraints must be
adjusted to your body height so that they can give you maximum
protection .
• Always try to keep as much distance as possible between your­
self and the steering wheel or instrument panel.
• Do not adjust the driver's or front passenger 's seat while the
vehicle is moving. Your seat may move unexpectedly, causing
sudden loss of vehicle control and personal injury . If you adjust
your seat while the vehicle is moving, you are out of position. •
Driver's seat

We recomm end that you a djust th e d rive r's sea t in the
fo llowing man ner:
- Ad just the sea t in f ore and a ft dire ct io n so that y ou can

-Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge is as even as
possible with the top of your head. If that is not possible,
try to adjust the head restraint so that it is as close to this
position as possible=:>
page 77.
& WARNING
Never place any objects in the driver's footwell. An object could
get into the pedal area and interfere with pedal function. In case
of sudden braking or an accident, you would not be able to brake
or accelerate! •
Front passenger's seat
Always move the front passenger seat into the rearmost
position.
To avoid contact with the airbag while it is deploying, do not
sit any closer to the instrument panel than necessary and
always wear the three-point safety belt provided adjusted
correctly. We recommend that you adjust the passenger's
seat in the following manner:
- Move the front passenger seat into the rearmost position
of the fore and aft adjustment range=:>

- Bring the backrest up to an (almost) upright position. Do
not ride with the seat reclined.
- Adjust the head restraint so the upper edge is as even as
possible with the top of your head. If that is not possible,
try to adjust the head restraint so that it is as close to this

- Place you r feet on the floor in front of the passenger's
seat .•

Some of the controls are fitted on certain models only or they are
optional equipment. •

Adjusting the manual seats
Position, angle and shape of the manual seats can be
adjusted to provide safe and comfortable seating.
Read and heed all WARNINGS =:> & before you adjust your
seat .

Moving the front seats forward or backward
-Lift the lever => page 74, fig. 69 (D and slide the seat to
the desired posi tion.
- Release the lever and then move the seat f urther until you
feel and hear it engage.
Adjusting the seat height
- Pull th e le ver @up and pu mp i t to raise th e seat .
-Push the lev er down and pum p i t to lo wer the sea t.
Adjusting the seatback angle
- Lean forwa rd to take yo ur weight off the seatback.
Tur n th e ha nd whee l© in the direc tio n you want the seat ­
back to til t.
& WARNING
• Never adju st the driver's or front passenger's seat while the
vehicle is mov ing . If you do this while the veh icle is moving , you
will be out of po sition. Always adjust the driver's or front
passenge r's seat when the vehicle is not moving .
• Be careful when adjusting the seat height . Check to see that no
one is in the way , or serious injury could result!
• To reduce the risk of in jury in the case of sudden braking or
accident , front passengers must never ride in a moving vehicle
with the seatba ck reclined. Safety belt s and the airbag system
only offer max imum protection when the seatback is upright and
the safety belt s are properly positioned on the body . The more the

-Push the rear of the switch plate in order to decrease the
curvature.
Adjusting the height
- Push on the top of the switch plate in order to move the
support higher.
- Push on the bottom of the switch plate in order to move
the support lower.
& WARNING
Never adjust the lumbar support while the vehicle is moving. If
you adjust your seat while the vehicle is moving, you will be out of
position. Always adjust the lumbar support when the vehicle is
not moving. •

occupants's height to provide optimal restraint in combi­
nation with the seat restraints.
