Before you check anything in the engine compartment,

D ete rmining oil l ev e l
- Park your vehicle so that it is horizontally level.
- While at operating state temperature, briefly let the
engine run at idle and then shut it off.
- Wait approx . two minutes.
Vehicle OP-eration
-Pull out the oil dipstick. Wipe off the oil dipstick with a
clean cloth, and slide it back in as far as it will go.
- Pull it back out and read off the oil level~ fig. 163 or
~ fig. 164. Top off the engine oil, if applicable
~ page 232 .
Oil level w ithin range @
- Do not add oil.
Oil level within range®
- You can add oil. A~erwards, the oil level should be within
range @.

-You must add oil. A~erwards, the oil level should be

The oil level needs to be checked at regular intervals. The best times
to do this are whenever you refuel and prior to long trips.
Depending on the way the vehicle is driven and the operating condi­
tions, oil consumption can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 miles (0.5 liter
per 2,000 km). Consumption may be higher within the first 3,000
miles (5,000 km). •

• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine part s -fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust sy stem when the
engine is running -fire hazard!

• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil , you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly .

• The oi l level mus t not be above rang e@ -danger of converter or
eng ine damage! Contact a qualified workshop to draw off oil, if
nece ssary.
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle Limited
Warranty.

• Under no c ircumstances can the o il come in contact with the
sew age netwo rk o r the soil.
• Observe and follow legal regulations when dispos ing of empty oil
conta iners. •
Changing the eng ine oil

The eng ine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified in
your Warran ty

the lub ricating properties of oil d imin ish gradually during normal
vehicle use .
Under some circumstances t he e ngine o il should be changed more

Tire service Life
The servi ce life of tires depends on a lot of different
things including proper installation and balancing,
correct tir e pressure and driving style.

The original t ires o n your veh icle have 1/16 inch ( 1.6 mm) h igh "wear
ind icators"~ fig. 173 running across the tread . Depending on the
ma ke, there w ill be six to eight of them even Ly placed around the ti re.
Marks on the t ire sidewall (for examp le "TWI " or other symbols) indi­
cate the positions of the tread wea r indicators . Worn t ires must be
replaced. Differe nt figu res may apply in other countries ~ & .
Tire pressure
Incorrect tire pressure causes premature wea r and can cause sudden
tire blow-o ut. Fo r th is reason, tire pressu re must be checked at least
once a month~

Driv ing style
Driving fast aro und curves, heavy accele ration and hard b raking
increase tire wear .
Rotating tires for more even wear
For all four tires o n your ve hicle to have the same se rvice life, we
recommend that the fron t and rear t ires are rot ated according to the
tire manufact urer's suggested tire rotat ion intervals . Please
remember the fo llow ing :

& Maintenance Booklet.
• The longer one tire is used in one locat ion on the vehicle, the more
it wears at certain points; therefore, we recommend that you follow
the t ire manufacture r's sugges ted tire rotation interva ls .
• Vehicles with front-whee l drive experience more tread wea r on the
front wheels compa red to a ll-wheel dr ive (quattro ®).

• Extra care must be taken when rotating direction -specific t ires
~ page 279 .
Wheel balancing
The wheels on new vehicles are balanced. However, var ious si tuatio ns
dur ing everyday driving can cause them to become unbalanced,
resu lting in v ibr ations yo u can us ua lly fee l throug h the stee rin g
w heel.
Unbalanced whee ls mus t be rebalanced to avoid excessive wea r on
steeri ng, suspension and tires . A wheel must also be rebalanced
when a new tire is installed.

Under difficult operating conditions, for example at extreme ly low
outs ide temperatu res, in very d usty reg ions, whe n tow ing a trailer
very frequently, etc ., some service work s ho ul d be performed

• cleaning or rep lacing the air fi lter .

Important considerations for you and your
vehicle
T he increasing use of e lec tronics, sophisticated fuel in jection and
em ission control systems, a nd the generally increasing tec hnical
complexity of to day's automobi les, have stea dily reduced the scope
o f ma inte nance a nd repai rs wh ich can be ca rried out by veh icle
owners.
Also , safety and environmental concerns p lace very strict
limits o n the na ture of repa irs and adjustments to engi ne and trans­
mission parts which an owner can perform.
M ainte nance, adjustments and repairs us ually re quire spe cial tools,
testing devices and other equipme nt available to spec ially trained
workshop pe rsonnel in order to assure p roper per formance, reli ­
ability and safety of the vehicle and its many systems .
Improper maintenance, ad justments and repairs can impa ir the oper­
ation and reliability of you r ve hicl e and even void you r vehicle
warranty. Therefore, proof of servicing in accordance with the ma in­
t enance schedule may be a c ondi tion for upholding a possib le
warranty claim made w ith in the warra nty period.
Above all, operat iona l sa fety can be a dve rsely af fec ted, crea ting
unnecessary risks for you and your passenge rs . If
in doubt about any serv ic ing, have it done by your authorized Audi
de aler or any o ther p rope rly equippe d and qua lifi ed workshop. We
strongly u rge you to give yo ur aut horized Audi dealer the opportunity
to pe rform all scheduled ma intenance an d necessary repairs . Yo ur
dealer has t he facilit ies, original parts a nd trai ned spec ia lists to keep
your vehicle runni ng proper ly.
