Keys

Three types of keys are provided for your vehicle.
Master key, submaster key and valet key.
The master key and submaster key fit all
locks on your vehicle. . Ignition switch
. Driver ’s door
. Glove box
The valet key fits only the ignition switch
and door locks. You can keep the glove box locked when you leave your vehicle
and valet key at a parking facility.
CAUTION
Do not attach a large key holder or
key case to either key. If it bangs
against your knees while you are
driving, it could turn the ignition
switch from the “ON ”position to the
“ Acc ”or “LOCK ”position, thereby
stopping the engine. &

The key number is stamped on the key
number plate attached to the key set.
Write down the key number and keep it in
another safe place, not in the vehicle. This
number is needed to make a replacement
key if you lose your key or lock it inside thevehicle.
For information on making replacement
keys for models with the immobilizer
system, refer to “Security ID plate ”F 2-3.

Immobilizer
The immobilizer system is designed to
prevent an unauthorized person from
starting the engine. Only keys registered
with your vehicle’s immobilizer system can
be used to operate your vehicle. Even if
an unregistered key fits into the ignition
switch and can be turned to the “START ”
position, the engine will automatically stop
after several seconds.
Each immobilizer key contains a trans-
ponder in which the key ’s ID code is
stored. When a key is inserted into the
ignition switch and turned to the “ON ”
position, the transponder transmits thekey ’s ID code to the immobilizer system ’s
receiver. If the transmitted ID code
matches the ID code registered in the
immobilizer system, the system allows the
engine to be started. Since the ID code is
transmitted and acted upon almost in-
stantly, the immobilizer system does not
impede normal starting of the engine.
If the engine does not start, pull out the
key once before trying again. Refer to“ Ignition switch ”F 3-3.

NOTE
To protect your vehicle from theft,
please pay close attention to the fol-
lowing security precautions. . Never leave your vehicle unattended
with its keys inside. . Before leaving your vehicle, close all
windows and lock the doors and reargate.. Do not leave spare keys or any
record of your key number in thevehicle.
CAUTION
. Do not place the key under direct
sunlight or anywhere it may
become hot. .
Do not get the key wet. If the key
gets wet, wipe it dry with a cloth
immediately.

The security ID is stamped on the security
ID plate attached to the key set. Write
down the security ID and keep it in
another safe place, not in the vehicle.
This number is needed to make a replace-
ment key if you lose your key or lock it
inside the vehicle.
This number is also needed for replace-
ment or repair of the engine control unit,
integrated unit, and combination meter. Keys and doors

& Security indicator light
The security indicator light deters potential
thieves by indicating that the vehicle is
equipped with an immobilizer system. It
begins flashing approximately 60 seconds
after the ignition switch is turned from the“ON ”position to the “Acc ”or “LOCK ”
position or immediately after the key is
pulled out.
If the security indicator light does not flash,
the immobilizer system may be malfunc-
tioning. If this occurs, contact your
SUBARU dealer as soon as possible.
In case an unauthorized key is used (e.g.
an imitation key), the security indicator
light illuminates. NOTE
Even if the security indicator light
flashes irregularly or its fuse blows
(the light does not flash if its fuse is
blown), the immobilizer system will
function normally. &
Key replacement
Your key number plate and security ID
plate will be required if you ever need a
replacement key made. Any new key must
be registered for use with your vehicle ’s
immobilizer system before it can be used.
Up to four keys can be registered for use
with one vehicle.
For security, all the keys registered with
your vehicle ’s immobilizer system will
have their ID codes erased and re-
registered when a new key is made.
Therefore, all of your vehicle ’s keys must
be presented when a new key is regis-
tered. Any key that is not re-registered
when a new key is made cannot be used
after the other keys are re-registered. For
information on replacement keys and on
the registration of keys with your immo-
bilizer system, contact your SUBARU
dealer. NOTE
A vehicle that is equipped with the
remote engine start system as a dealer option can register up to three keys for
use with one vehicle.

& Tripped sensor identification
The security indicator light flashes when
the alarm system has been triggered.
Also, the number of flashes indicates the
location of unauthorized intrusion or the
severity of impact on the vehicle.
When the ignition switch is turned to the “ ON ”position, the indicator light will
illuminate for 1 second and then flash asfollows. . When a door or rear gate was opened:
5 times. When the ignition switch was turned to
the “ON ”position by using a key not
registered with your immobilizer system: 3 times . When a strong impact or multiple
impacts were sensed: twice (only vehicles
with shock sensors (dealer option)) . When a light impact was sensed: once
(only vehicles with shock sensors (dealer option))
NOTE
Any of the above indicator light flash-
ing patterns will recur each time the
ignition switch is turned to the “ON ”
position. Rearming the alarm system
cancels the flashing pattern of the
security indicator light. &
Shock sensors (dealer op- tion)
The shock sensors trigger the alarm
system when they sense impacts applied
to the vehicle and when any of their
electric wires is cut. The alarm system
causes the horn to sound and the turn
signal lights to flash for a short time when
the sensed impact is weak, but it warns of
a strong impact or multiple impacts by
sounding the horn and flashing the turn
signal lights, both lasting approximately 30seconds.
If you desire, your SUBARU dealer can
connect them and set them for activation
or deactivation. NOTE . The shock sensors are not always
able to sense impacts caused by break-
ing in, and cannot sense an impact that
does not cause vibration (such as
breaking the glass using a rescuehammer).. The shock sensors may sense vi-
bration like those shown in the follow-
ing list and trigger the alarm system.
Select the settings of the alarm system
and shock sensors appropriately de-
pending on where you usually park
your vehicle. Example:
–Vibration from construction site
– Vibration in multistory car park
– Vibration from trains
. You can have the sensitivity of the
shock sensors adjusted to your pre-
ference by your SUBARU dealer.

In this position the electrical accessories
(radio, accessory power outlet, etc.) can
be used. & ON
This is the normal operating position after
the engine is started. & START
CAUTION
Do not turn the ignition switch to the “ START ”position while the engine
is running.
The engine is started in this position. The
starter cranks the engine to start it. When
the key is released (after the engine has
started), the key automatically returns tothe “ON ”position.
If your registered key fails to start the
engine, pull out the key once (the security
indicator light will blink), and then insert
the key in the ignition switch and turn it tothe “START ”position and again try to start
the engine. NOTE
The engine may not start in the follow-
ing cases.
.
The key grip is touching another key
or a metallic key holder.
. The key is near another key that contains an immobilizer transponder. .
The key is near or touching another
transmitter. & Key reminder chime
The reminder chime sounds when the driver ’s door opens and the key is in the
“ LOCK ”or “Acc ”positions. The chime
stops when the key is removed from the
ignition switch.
& Ignition switch light
For easy access to the ignition switch in
the dark, the ignition switch light illumi-
nates when the driver ’s door is opened.
The light remains on for several seconds
and then gradually turns off after driver ’s
door is closed. Also, the light turns off
immediately if the key is turned to the “ON ”
position.

The Vehicle Dynamics Control system
provides its ABS control through the
electrical circuit of the ABS system.
Accordingly, if the ABS is inoperative, the
Vehicle Dynamics Control system be-
comes unable to provide ABS control. As
a result, the Vehicle Dynamics Control
system also becomes inoperative, caus-
ing the warning light to illuminate. Though
both the Vehicle Dynamics Control and
ABS systems are inoperative in this case,
the ordinary functions of the brake system
are still available. You will be safe while
driving with this condition, but have your
vehicle checked at a SUBARU dealer as
soon as possible. NOTE
If the warning light behavior is as
shown in the following, the Vehicle
Dynamics Control system may be con-
sidered normal. .The warning light illuminates right
after the engine is started but turns off
immediately, remaining off.. The warning light illuminates after
engine startup and turns off while the
vehicle is subsequently being driven. .
The warning light illuminates during
driving, but it turns off immediately and
remains off. ! Traction Control system OFF indi-
cator light
. It illuminates when the Traction Control
system OFF switch is pressed. . It also illuminates when the Traction
Control system is deactivated.
NOTE . The light may remain illuminated for
a while after the engine has been
started, especially in cold weather. This
does not indicate the existence of a
problem. The light should turn off as
soon as the engine has warmed up.. The indicator light illuminates when
the engine has developed a problem
and the CHECK ENGINE warning light/
Malfunction indicator lamp illuminates.
The Vehicle Dynamics Control system is
probably malfunctioning under the follow-
ing condition. Have your vehicle checked
at a SUBARU dealer as soon as possible. . The light does not turn off even after
the lapse of several minutes (the engine
has warmed up) after the engine hasstarted. &
Security indicator light
The indicators are located in the center
portion of the dashboard.
This indicator light shows the status of the
alarm system. It also indicates operation
of the immobilizer system. ! Alarm system
It blinks to show the driver the operational
status of the alarm system. For detailed
information, refer to “Alarm system ”F 2-
16. ! Immobilizer system
This light blinks approximately 60 seconds
after the ignition switch is turned from“ ON ”position to the “Acc ”or “LOCK ”
position or immediately after the key is
pulled out. Refer to “Immobilizer ”F 2-3.

If the indicator light does not flash, it may
indicate that immobilizer system may be
malfunctioning. Contact your nearest
SUBARU dealer immediately.
In the event that an unauthorized key (for
example, an unauthorized duplicate) is
used, the security indicator light illumi-nates. & SPORT mode indicator light
This light illuminates when the ignition
switch is turned to the “ON ”position and
turns off after the engine has started.
When the select lever is moved to the
manual gate, the SPORT mode is se-
lected and the indicator light illuminates.
Refer to “SPORT mode ”F 7-18. &
Select lever/Gear position in- dicator
The select lever/gear position indicator
shows the position of the select lever.
When manual mode is selected, the gear
position indicator shows the current gear
position and the upshift/downshift indica-
tor illuminates. Refer to “Automatic trans-
mission ”F 7-12.
& Turn signal indicator lights
These lights show the operation of the turn
signal or lane change signal.
If the indicator lights do not blink or blink
rapidly, the turn signal bulb may be burned
out. Replace the bulb as soon as possible.

High beam indicator light
This light shows that the headlights are in
the high beam mode.
This indicator light also illuminates when
the headlight flasher is operated. &Cruise control indica-
tor light
The cruise control indicator light illumi-
nates when the ignition switch is turned tothe “ON ”position and turns off after
approximately 3 seconds.
This light illuminates when the “CRUISE ”
main switch is pressed. NOTE . If you move the cruise control lever
or press the main switch button while
turning the ignition switch “ON ”, the
cruise control function is deactivated
and the cruise control indicator light
flashes. To reactivate the cruise control
function, turn the ignition switch back
to the “Acc ”or “LOCK ”position, and
then turn it again to the “ON ”position.
. If this indicator light and the CHECK
ENGINE warning light/malfunction in-
dicator lamp flash simultaneously dur-
ing driving, have the vehicle checked
by your nearest SUBARU dealer.
