Operating procedure for recharging
y o u r fl a t b a t t e r y o r f o r s t a r t i n g t h e e n -
gine from another battery.
To start the vehicle from another
battery:
- Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminals of the two batteries,
- Connect one end of the green or black cable to the negative (-) termi-
nal of the slave battery,
- Connect the other end of the green or black cable to an earth point on
the broken down vehicle, as far as
possible from the battery (for exam-
ple, right-hand engine mounting),
- Operate the starter, let the engine run,
- Wait for the engine to return to idle, then disconnect the cables.
To charge the battery using a battery
charger:
- Disconnect the battery,
- Follow the instructions for use given by the battery charger manufacturer,
- Reconnect starting with the nega- tive (-) terminal,
- Check that the terminals and connec- tors are clean. If they are covered with
sulphate (white or greenish deposit),
disconnect them and clean them.
It is advisable to disconnect the bat-
tery if the vehicle is not to be used for
a period of more than one month.
- Wait for 2 minutes after switch-
ing off the ignition before dis-
connecting the battery.
- Never disconnect a terminal when the engine is running.
- Never charge a battery without fi r s t d i s c o n n e c t i n g t h e t e r m i n a l s .
- Close the windows before dis- connecting the battery.
- After every reconnection of the battery, switch on the ignition
and wait 1 minute before start-
ing to allow the electronic sys-
tems to be initialised. If slight
d i f fi c u l t i e s a r e e x p e r i e n c e d
after this, please consult a
PEUGEOT dealer.

TOWING A TRAILER, A
CARAVAN, ETC.
Your vehicle is primarily designed for
transporting people and luggage, but it
may also be used for towing a trailer. Driving advice
In the case of vehicles equipped with
an HDI engine, it is recommended that
the engine is left running at idle for ap-
proximately 20 seconds after intensive
use (towing on a motorway, prolonged
driving, ...) before the ignition is switched
off. This limits increases in the tempera-
ture of the engine after it is switched off.
Note: in certain cases of particularly ar-
duous use (towing the maximum load
in high temperatures), the engine lim-
its its power automatically. In this case,
switching off the air conditioning will
regain engine power and therefore in-
crease the towing capacity.
In all cases, pay attention to the coolant
temperature.
Distribution of loads
Distribute the load in the trailer so
that the heaviest items are as close
as possible to the axle and the nose
weight approaches the maximum
permitted without exceeding it.
Air density decreases with altitude, thus
reducing engine performance. Above
1 000 metres, the maximum towing load
must be reduced by 10 % and so on for
every 1 000 metres of altitude.
Refer to the "Technical Data" section for
details of the weights and towing loads
which apply to your vehicle.
Side wind
Take into account the increased
sensitivity to side wind. Braking
Towing a trailer increases the braking
distance.
Tyres
Check the tyre pressures of the
towing vehicle and of the trailer,
observing the recommended pres-
sures.
Lighting
Check the electrical lighting and sign-
alling on the trailer.
If the warning lamp and the
STOP warning lamp come
on, stop the vehicle and
switch off the engine as
soon as possible.
Towbar suited to the attachment of a
trailer or caravan with additional signal-
ling and lighting.
Cooling
Towing a trailer on a slope increases
the temperature of the coolant.
As the fan is electrically controlled, its
cooling capacity is not dependent on
the engine speed.
To lower the engine speed, reduce
your speed.
We recommend the use of original
PEUGEOT towbars and their har-
nesses that have been tested and
approved from the design stage of
y o u r v e h i c l e a n d t h a t t h e fi t t i n g o f t h e
towbar is entrusted to a PEUGEOT
dealer.
I f t h e t r a i l e r i s n o t fi t t e d b y a P E U G E O T
d e a l e r , i t i s i m p e r a t i v e t h a t i t i s fi t t e d
using the electrical pre-equipment
installed at the rear of the vehicle, in
accordance with the manufacturer’s
instructions.
Driving with a trailer subjects the towing
v e h i c l e t o m o r e s i g n i fi c a n t s t r e s s a n d i t s
driver must be particularly careful.

TRAJECTORY CONTROL
SYSTEMS
Anti-skid regulation (ASR) and
electronic stability programme
(ESP)
Activation
These systems are activated automati-
cally each time the vehicle is started. They come into operation in
the event of a grip or trajectory
problem.

this warning lamp on the instru-
ment panel. Deactivation
In exceptional conditions (starting a ve-
hicle which is bogged down, stuck in
snow, on soft ground...), it may be ad-
visable to deactivate the ASR and ESP
systems, so that the wheels can move
freely and regain grip.
Press the "ESP OFF" button, located
on the left below the steering wheel.
Reactivation
These systems are reactivated automati-
cally each time the ignition is switched
back on.
Press the "ESP OFF" button again
to reactivate them manually.
If this warning lamp comes on in the instru-
ment panel and the indicator lamp on the
button comes on, this indicates that the
ASR and ESP systems are deactivated.
Operating fault
If this warning lamp comes on,
accompanied by an audible sig-
nal and a message on the multi-
function screen, this indicates a
malfunction of these systems.
Have the systems checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
The ESP/ASR systems offer ex-
ceptional safety in normal driving,
but this should not encourage the
driver to take extra risks or drive at
high speed.
The correct functioning of these
systems depends on observation
of the manufacturer's recommen-
dations regarding the wheels (tyres
and rims), the braking components,
the electronic components and the
PEUGEOT assembly and opera-
tion procedures.
After an impact, have these systems
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
The anti-skid regulation (also known as
Traction Control) optimises traction to
prevent skidding of the wheels, by act-
ing on the brakes of the driving wheels
and on the engine.
The electronic stability programme acts
on the brake of one or more wheels and
on the engine to keep the vehicle on the
trajectory required by the driver, within
the limits of the laws of physics.
