Failure indications
System failure is indicated by warning light
álighting up
on the instrument panel together with a dedicated mes-
sage appearing on the reconfigurable multifunctional dis-
play; see “Instrument panel warning lights”.
IMPORTANT The Hill Holder system is not a parking
brake; therefore, never leave the car without having en-
gaged the handbrake, turned the engine off and engaged
first gear.
If the small spare wheel is used, the Advanced
ESP system is still operational. Be aware,
however, that as the small spare wheel is
smaller than the original wheel, it provides less grip.
In order for the Advanced ESP and ASR systems to
operate correctly, the tyres must be of the same brand
and type on all wheels, in perfect condition and,
above all, be of the specified type, brand and size.
HILL HOLDER SYSTEM
This is an integral part of the ESP system and automati-
cally cuts in if one or both drive wheels slip, helping the
driver to control the car:
❍uphill: car at a standstill on a road with a gradient
higher than 5%, engine running, clutch and brake ped-
al pressed, gearbox to neutral or gear engaged other
than reverse;
❍downhill: car at a standstill on a road with a gradient
higher than 5%, engine running, clutch and brake ped-
al pressed and reverse gear engaged.
At take-off the Advanced ESP system control unit will
maintain a brake force on the wheels until the torque re-
quired for setting off is reached, or in any case for a max-
imum of 2 seconds so that the right foot can be moved eas-
ily from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
After two seconds without setting off, the system will de-
activate automatically, gradually releasing the brake force.
During the release stage, the typical brake disengagement
noise may be heard, indicating that the car is going to
move.

PARKING THE CAR
Proceed as follows:
❍stop the engine and engage the handbrake;
❍engage a gear (on a slope, engage first gear if the car
is faced uphill or reverse if it is faced downhill) and
leave the wheels steered.
If the car is parked on a steep slope, it is further advisable
to block the wheels with a wedge or stone.
Do not leave the ignition key on MAR to prevent drain-
ing the battery. Always remove the key when you leave the
car.
Never leave children unattended in the car. Always remove
the ignition key when leaving the car and take it out with
you.

USING THE MANUAL GEARBOX
To engage the gears, press the clutch pedal fully and shift
the gear lever into one of the required positions (the gear
diagram varies according to the different versions and is
shown on the knob or on the plate below the lever fig. 2).
To engage sixth gear, operate the lever by pressing it to-
wards the right in order to avoid engaging fourth gear by
mistake. Use the same action to pass from sixth to fifth
gear.
IMPORTANT Reverse may only be engaged when the car
is at a standstill. With the engine running, wait at least 2
seconds before engaging reverse gear with the clutch
pressed down to the floor in order to avoid damaging or
scraping the gears.

To engage reverse gear R from neutral, raise ring A un-
der the knob and at the same time move the gearshift lever
to the left and then forwards.
For the 1.6 Multijet version: To engage reverse R from neu-
tral, raise ring A under the knob and at the same time
move the gearshift lever to the right and then backwards.
IMPORTANT The clutch pedal should only be used to
change gear. Do not drive with you foot resting on the
clutch pedal, even lightly. For versions/markets, where
provided, the electronic clutch control could cut in by in-
terpreting the anomalous driving style as a fault.
Press the clutch pedal fully to change gears
correctly. For this reason, there must be no
obstacles on the floor under the pedals: en-
sure that rubber mats (if any) are correctly posi-
tioned, not interfering with the pedals.
Do not drive with your hand resting on the
gear lever, because this pressure, even if light,
over time can wear out the gearbox inner
components.
REDUCING RUNNING COSTS
Here are some useful tips to save fuel and minimize pol-
luting emissions of CO
2and other pollutants (nitric oxide,
unburnt hydrocarbons, fine dusts etc…).
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Car maintenance
Have checks and adjustments carried out in accordance
with the “Scheduled Service Plan”.
Tyres
Check tyre pressure regularly, at least once every four
weeks: excessively low pressure will increase fuel con-
sumption because rolling resistance will be higher.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with an overloaded boot. Do not travel with
too much luggage stowed in the boot. The weight of the
car (especially when driving in town) and its trim great-
ly affect fuel consumption and stability.

STARTING THE ENGINE
Go to a Lancia Dealership immediately if instrument pan-
el warning light
Yremains on constantly.

If the battery is flat, the engine may be started using an
auxiliary battery with the same capacity or a little high-
er than the flat one.
Proceed as follows to start the car:
❍connect the positive terminals (+ sign near the termi-
nal) of the two batteries with a jump lead;
❍with a second lead, connect the negative terminal –
of the auxiliary battery to an earth point E
on the en-
gine or the gearbox of the car to be started;
❍start the engine;
❍when engine has started, remove the cables by revers-
ing the sequence described for connection.

Never use a quick battery charger for an
emergency start: this could damage the elec-
tronic systems and the engine fuel feed and
ignition control units.
This starting procedure must be carried out
by expert personnel as incorrect manoeuvres
can cause electrical discharges of consider-
able intensity. Furthermore, battery fluid is poiso-
nous and corrosive: avoid contact with your skin
and eyes. Keep naked flames away from the battery.
No smoking. Do not cause sparks.

Perform the following inspections more frequently than
shown on the Scheduled Service Plan:
❍check front disc brake pad condition and wear;
❍check cleanness of bonnet and boot locks and linkage
cleanness and lubrication;
❍visually inspect the condition of: engine, gearbox,
transmission, pipes and hoses (exhaust – fuel supply
- brakes) rubber elements (gaiters – hoses - bushes
etc.);❍check battery charge and fluid level (electrolyte); (see
“Battery - Charge and electrolyte level check” in this
chapter);
❍visually inspect the condition of auxiliary drivebelts;
❍check and if necessary replace the pollen filter; in par-
ticular it should be replaced if a decrease in the air flow
into the passenger compartment is detected;
❍check the air filter and replace, if required.
