cially careful when braking, acceler- ating or shifting gears. On a slipperysurface, an abrupt change in ve- hicle speed can cause the drive wheels to lose traction and the ve-hicle to go out of control.
WARNING:
o Avoid high cornering speeds.
o Do not make quick steering wheel movements, such as sharp lane changes or fast, sharp turns.
o Always wear your seat belts. In a collis ion crash, an unbelted person
is significantly more likely to die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
o The risk of rollover is greatly in-
creased if you lose control ofyour vehicle at highway speeds.
o Loss of control often occurs if
two or more wheels drop off theroadway and the driver oversteers to reenter the roadway.
o In the event your vehicle leaves the roadway, do not steer sharply.Instead, slow down before pull- ing back into the travel lanes.
o Never exceed posted speed lim- its. D190A01HR-GAT (If Installed) A locking differential, if equipped, is for the rear wheel differential only. Thefeatures of this locking differential are described below: Just as with a conventional differential,the wheel on one side is allowed to turn at a different speed from the wheel on the other side when the vehicle iscornering. The difference between the locking differential and a conventional differential is that if the wheel on oneside of the vehicle loses traction, a greater amount of torque is applied to the rear wheel on the other side toimprove traction. NOTE: In a stationary position, the LD (Locking Differential) will operate when the difference of the revolu- tion speed between the rear rightwheel and the rear left wheel oc- curs.
The following procedures can be used to confirm that the locking differentialis functioning properly:
(1) Position the vehicle so that one
wheel is on a dry paved surface and the other on ice, snow, mud, etc. Drive the vehicle, and observe theoperation of the locking differential. The vehicle should not become stuck if the differential is function-ing properly.
(2) Depress the accelerator pedal
gradually, and then when traction isgood, depress it forcefully. If the vehicle accelerates well, the differ- ential is functioning properly.

turn the front wheels away from the curb to help keep the car from roll-ing. If there is no curb or if it is required by other conditions to keep the carfrom rolling, block the wheels.
o Under some conditions your park-
ing brake can freeze in the engagedposition. This is most likely to hap- pen when there is an accumulation of snow or ice around or near therear brakes or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only tem-porarily while you put the gear se- lector lever in first or reverse gear and block the rear wheels so the carcannot roll. Then release the park- ing brake.
o Do not hold the vehicle on the up- grade with the accelerator pedal.This can cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brakepedal or parking brake. o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal.
This can increase fuel consumptionand also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions,DRIVING FOR ECONOMY
C140A01A-GAT You can save fuel and get more kilo- meters from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack- rabbit" starts or full-throttle shiftsand maintain a steady cruising speed. Don't race between stop- lights. Try to adjust your speed tothat of the other traffic so you don't have to change speeds unneces- sarily. Avoid heavy traffic wheneverpossible. Always maintain a safe distance from other vehicles so you can avoidunnecessary braking. This also re- duces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel yourcar uses. Driving at a moderate speed, especially on the highway, isone of the most effective ways to reduce fuel consumption.

8. When parking your car and trailer,especially on a hill, be sure to fol- low all the normal precautions. Turn your front wheel into the curb, set the parking brake firmly, and putthe transmission in 1st or Reverse. In addition, place wheel chocks at each of the trailer's tires.
9. If the trailer has electric brakes, start your vehicle and trailer mov-ing, and then apply the trailer brakecontroller by hand to be sure the brakes are working. This lets you check your electrical connection atthe same time.
10. During your trip, check occasion-
ally to be sure that the load issecure, and that the lights and any trailer brakes are still working.
11. Avoid jerky starts, sudden accel- eration or sudden stops.
12. Avoid sharp turns and rapid lane
changes.
13. Avoid holding the brake pedal down too long or too frequently. This could cause the brakes to over-heat, resulting in reduced braking efficiency.

1. Before towing, check hitch and
safety chain connections as well as proper operation of the trailer running lights, brake lights, and turn signals.
2. Always drive your vehicle at a mod- erate speed (Less than 100 km/h).
3. Trailer towing requires more fuel than normal conditions.
4. To maintain engine braking effi-
ciency, do not tow a trailer withtransmission in fifth gear.
5. Always secure items in the trailer
to prevent load shift while driving.
6. Check the condition and air pres- sure of all tires on the trailer andyour car. Low tire pressure canseriously affect the handling. Also check the spare tire.
7. The vehicle/trailer combination is more affected by crosswind andbuffeting. When being passed by a largevehicle, keep a constant speed and steer straight ahead. If there is too much wind buffeting, slow downto get out of the other vehicle's air turbulence.

Wheel Cover (If Installed) Front To remove the wheel cover insert the rod (1) into the crack between the wheeland wheel cover, and pry up the wheel cover gently with the rod.

To reinstall the wheel cover fit the grooves of the wheel cover in the wheel lug nuts of wheel and hit the center of the wheel cover with your hand.

The method for jacking up the vehicle should be remembered in order to change a tire in the event of a puncture and in order to install tire chains. OHR058116
OHR058117D060D01A-AAT 3. Loosen Wheel Nuts Assemble the tools(1)(2)(3) into the wheel lug nut wrench orderly like thepicture. The wheel nuts should be loosened slightly before raising the car. To loosenthe nuts, turn the wrench handle coun- terclockwise. When doing this, be sure that the socket is seated completelyover the nut so it cannot slip off. For maximum leverage, position the wrench so the handle is to the right asshown in the illustration. Then, while holding the wrench near the end of the handle, pull up on it with steady pres-sure. Do not remove the nuts at this time. Just loosen them about one-half turn. OHR058108D060C01A-AAT 2. Block the Wheel Block the wheel that is diagonally oppo- site from the flat tire to keep the vehiclefrom rolling when the car is raised on the jack.

D060J01A-AAT After changing wheels If you have a tire gauge, remove the valve cap and check the air pressure. If the pressure is lower than recom- mended, drive slowly to the nearestservice station and inflate to the cor- rect pressure. If it is too high, adjust it until it is correct. Always reinstall thevalve cap after checking or adjusting tire pressure. If the cap is not replaced, air may leak from the tire. If you lose avalve cap, buy another and install it as soon as possible. After you have changed wheels, al-ways secure the flat tire in its place and return the jack, jack handle, and tools to their proper storage locations. OHR058103
NOTE: If your vehicle is equipped with double cab, first pull the cushion of rear seat forward (Refer to "RearSeat Cushion Under Box" on page 1-11) to take out the fire extinguisher.

If there is small fire and you know how to use the fire extinguisher, take the following steps carefully.
1. Pull the pin at the top of the extin- guisher that keeps the handle from being accidentally pressed.
2. Aim the nozzle toward the base of the fire.

With the engine off, press lightly on the clutch pedal until you feel a change inresistance. This is the clutch pedal free-play. The free-play should be within the limits specified in the illustration. Ifit is not, have it inspected by your Hyundai dealer and adjusted or re- paired if necessary.
CHECKING THE FREE-PLAY
G150A01A-GAT STEERING WHEEL To check the steering wheel free-play, stop the car with the wheels pointed straight ahead and gently move thesteering wheel back and forth. Use very light finger pressure and be sen- sitive to changes in resistance thatmark the limits of the freeplay. If the free-play is greater than specified, have it inspected by your Hyundai dealerand adjusted or repaired if necessary. HHR5023

I070A01A-AAT TIRE BALANCING A tire that is out of balance may affect handling and tire wear. The tires on your Hyundai were balanced before the car was delivered but may needbalancing again during the years you own the car. Whenever a tire is dismounted forrepair, it should be rebalanced before
being reinstalled on the car. I080A01A-AAT TIRE TRACTION Tire traction can be reduced if you drive on worn tires, tires that are im-properly inflated or on slippery road surfaces. Tires should be replaced when tread wear indicators appear. Toreduce the possibility of losing control, slow down whenever there is rain, snow or ice on the road. I090A01S-GAT WHEN TO REPLACE TIRES
Tires should be rotated every 5,000 km (3,000 miles). If you notice that tires arewearing unevenly between rotations, have the car checked by a Hyundai dealer so the cause may be corrected.After rotating, adjust the tire pressures and be sure to check wheel nut torque.

Do not mix bias-ply and radial-ply tires under any circumstances. Thismay cause dangerous handling char- acteristics.

When replacing tires, never mix radial and bias-ply tires on thesame car. If you replace radial tires with bias-ply tires, they must be installed in sets of four.
o Using tires and wheels of other than the recommended sizes maycause unusual handling charac-teristics that may cause death, serious injury or property dam- age.
The original tires on your car have treadwear indicators. The tread wear indica-tors appear when the tread depth is 1.6 mm (0.06 in.). The tire should be re- placed when these appear as a solid baracross two or more grooves of the tread. Always replace your tires with those of the recommended size. If youchange wheels, the new wheel's rim width and offset must meet Hyundai specification.
