Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS==> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 289.
- Turn off the engine.
- Unscrew the oil filler cap from the cylinder head cover
==>
page 294, fig. 245 or==> page 294, fig. 246.
- Carefully top off with the appropriate oil in 0.5 liter doses.
- Check the oil level again after two minutes==>
page 293.
- Top off the oil again, if necessary.
- Screw the cap back on the filling hole and slide the oil
dipstick in as far as it will go.
& WARNING
• While topping off, the oil must not come in contact with hot
engine parts - fire hazard!
• The oil filler cap must be properly secured to prevent oil from
being sprayed on the hot engine and exhaust system when the
engine is running - fire hazard!
• If your skin has come in contact with the engine oil, you must
subsequently cleanse it thoroughly.
0 Note
• The oil leve l must not be above range@- danger of converter or
eng ine damage! Contact an authorized dealership to draw off oil, if
necessary.
• Audi does not recommend the use of oil additives. They may
damage the engine and adversely affect your New Vehicle
Warranty.
Safety first

• Under no circumstances can the oil come in contact with the
sewage network or the soil.
• Observe and follow legal regulations when disposing of empty oil
containers. •
Changing the engine oil
We recommend that have your oil changed by an autho­
rized Audi dealer or a qualified service station.
Before you check anything in the engine compartment, always read
and heed all WARNINGS=>

ment" on
page 289.
The engine oil must be changed according to the intervals specified in
your Warranty
& Maintenance booklet. This is very important because
the lubricating properties of oil diminish gradually during normal
vehicle use.
Under some circumstances the engine oil sho uld be changed more
frequently. Change oil more often if you drive mostly short distances,
operate the vehicle in dusty areas or under predominant ly stop-and­
go traffic conditions, or have your vehicle where temperatures remain
below freezing for extended periods.
Detergent additives in the oil will make fresh oil look dark after the
engine has been running for a short time . This is normal and is not a
reason to change the oil more often than recommended .
Because of the problem of proper disposal, along with the special
tools and necessary expertise required, we strongly recommend that
you have your oil changed by an authorized
Audi dealer or a qualified
serv ice station.
If you choose to change your oil yourself, please note the following

- Read the brake fluid level from the brake fluid reservoir
=> fig. 248 . T he brake fluid level mus t be between the
" M IN" and "MAX" markings.
The br ake fl uid re se rvoir is loc ated at the rear pa rt iti on of the engine
compartment on the left side~ page 290.
T he f lu id level may drop slightly after some time due to the auto­
matic adjus tment of t he b rake pads. This is not caus e for alarm.
If the brake flu id leve l falls considerably below the "MIN" mark, t he

Changing brake fluid
H ave the brake flui d changed by an ex perienc ed techni­
cian.
Brake flui d abso rbs mois ture from t he a ir . If t he wa ter con ten t in the
brake fl uid is too hig h, corros io n in the b rake system may res ult afte r
a period of time . The boiling po int o f the bra ke fl uid will also decrease
cons iderab ly and decrease brak ing perfo rmance.
The refore, the brake fl uid m ust be changed
every two years . Always
use new bra ke fluid w hich conforms to Fede ral Motor Veh icle St an­
dard "FMVSS 116 DOT 4" .
Th e b rake fl uid reservoi r ca n be diffi cult to rea ch, there fore, we
recommend that you have the bra ke fluid c hanged by your author ized
Audi dealer. Your dea ler has the correct tools, the right b rake fl uid
and the know-how to do t his for you .
& WARNING
• Brake fluid is poisonous. It must be stored only in the closed
original container out of the reach of children!
• Brake failure can result from old or inappropriate brake flu id.
Observe these pre cautions:
- Use only brake fluid that meets SAE specification
J 1703 and
conforms to Federal Motor Vehicle Standard 116. Always che ck
with your authorized Audi dealer to make sure you are us ing
the correct brake fluid. The correct type of brake fluid i s also
indicated on the brake fluid reservoir .
- The brake fluid must be new. Heavy use of the brakes can
cause a vapor lock if the brake fluid is left in the system too
long . Thi s can seriously affect the efficiency of the brakes as
well as your safety . This could result in an accident.

Brake fluid will damage the paint of your ve hicle .

Battery
General information
Under normal operat ing condit ions, the battery in your Aud i does not
nee d any m ain ten ance. Wi th high outs ide temper atures o r long d aily
dr ives we recommend that yo u have the elect rolyte level checked by .,_

just going to replace a light bulb , then it is enough to switch off
the lights .
• Before disconnecting the battery , switch off the anti-theft
alarm system! Otherwise you will set off the alarm.
• When disconne cting the battery, first disconnect the negat ive
cable and then the po sitive cable.
• Before reconnecting the b attery, make sure all electrical
consumer s are sw itched off. Reconnect the positiv e cable fir st and
then the negative cable . Never inte rchange the cables -this could
start a fire!
• Never charge a frozen or a thawed-out battery.
It could
explode! If a battery has frozen, then it must be replaced . A
di scharged batter y can freeze over at 32 °F (0 °C ).
• Make sure the vent hose is always attached to the opening on
the side of the battery .
• Never use batteries which are damaged. There is the danger of
an explosion! Alway s replace a damaged battery.

and lead compounds, chemicals known to the State of California

Battery charging

- Only now plug t he m ain s lead for the c harg ing e quip ment

- Make sure the charging rate is not over 30 amps/14.8
Volt.
- When the b attery is fully c harg ed: Turn t he ch arging
equ ip m ent off and remo ve t he mains l ead fr om the wall
ou tlet.
- Now remove the clamp s for the cha rging eq uipment .
A discharged ba ttery can freeze a t temperat ures of on ly O 0C. Allow a
frozen batte ry to thaw comp letely before attempting to charge it
=> & . However, we recomme nd not usin g a thawed battery aga in
because the battery casing can be cracke d due to ice formation and

Groove
means the space between two adjacent tread ribs.
Load rating (code)
means the maximum load that a tire is rated to carry for a given infla­
tion pressure. You may not find this information on all tires because
it is not required by law.
Maximum load rating
means the load rating fo r a tir e at the maximum permissible inflation
pressure for that tire.
Maximum loaded vehicle weight
means the sum of:
(a) Curb weight
(b) Accessory weight
(c) Vehicle capacity weight, and
(d) Production options weight
Maximum (permissible) inflation pressure
means the maximum cold inflation pressure to which a tire may be
inflated. Also called "maximum inflation pressure."
Normal occupant weight
means 150 lbs. (68 kilograms) times the number of occupants seated
in the vehicle up to the total seating capacity of your vehicle.
Occupant distribution
means distr ibution of occupants in a vehicle .
Outer diameter
means the overall diameter of an inflated new tire.
Overall width
means the linear distance between the exteriors of the sidewalls of
an inflated tire, including elevations due to labeling, decorations, or
protective bands or ribs.
Ply
means a layer of rubber -coated paralle l cords.
Production options weight
means the combined weight of those installed regular production
options weigh ing over 5 lbs. (2.3 kg) in excess of those standard
items which they replace, not previously considered in curb weight or
accessory weight, including heavy duty brakes, ride levelers, roof
rack, heavy duty battery, and special trim.
Radial ply tire
means a pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the
beads are laid at substantially 90 degrees to the centerline of the
tread .
Recommended inflation pressure
see=> page 307, "Cold tire inflation pressure".
Reinforced tire
means a tire design to operate at higher loads and at higher inflation
pressures than the corresponding standard tire. Reinforced t ires may
be identified as "XL ", "x l", "EXTRA LOAD", or "RF" on the sidewall.
Rim
means a metal support for a tire or a tire and tube assembly upon
wh ich the tire beads are seated .
Rim diameter
means nominal diameter of the bead seat . If you change your wheel
size, you w ill have to purchase new tires to match the new rim diam­
eter .
Rim size designation
means rim diameter and width.
Rim width
means nom inal distance between rim flanges.

sure label lists the recommended cold tire inflation pressures for the
vehicle at its maximum capacity weight and tires that were on your
vehicle at the time it was manufactured.
If you wish to improve comfort when operating the vehicle at
normal load (up to 3 occupants), you can adjust tire pressures to
those specified for normal vehicle load. Before operating the
vehicle at maximum load, you must increase the tire pressures to
those specified for maximum vehicle load~& .
Bear in mind that the tire pressure monitoring system* can only
mon itor the tire pressures you have stored . The system does not
recognize the load condition of your vehicle.
Th e effectiveness of the tire pressure monitoring system* will be
impaired if you store normal load pressures but then operate the
vehicle at its maximum load~.&, . See the
illustration
~ page 310, fig. 2 52 for the locat ion of the label
either on dr iver's side B-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap (color of the
actual label and exact location on the vehicle will vary slightly) .
Note that the following tab le is accurate at the time of going to press
and is subject to change. In the event of discrepancies , the tire pres­
sure label (On USA vehicles, the tire pressure label is located on the
dr ive r's side B -pillar . On Canada veh icles, the tire pressure label is
located either on the dr iver's s ide B-pillar or inside the fue l f ill er flap)
always takes precedence.
The table below lists the recommended cold t ire inflation pressures
for the Audi model covered by your Owner's Literature at the vehicle's
capacity weight and the tire sizes insta lled on the respective models
as original equipment, or as a factory option .

eye on tire pressures. B ut the driver still has the responsibility for
maintaining the correct tire pressure .•

Storing tire pressures
Correct storage of specified pressure is the basic require­
ment for reliable tire pressure monitoring.
In order for the tire pressure monitoring system to operate
appropriately, you have to re-save the specified pressures
whenever you adjust tire pressure, for example when the load
condition of your vehicle changes . Proceed as follows:
Corr ecting tir e pr essure
- Check the pressure in the tires (including the spare t ire*) .
- Adjust air pressure as needed in accordance with t he infor -
mation on the label located e ither on the driver's side B ­
pillar (visible when the door is open), inside the fuel filler
flap and additionally in the manual.
Saving tire p ressures
- Turn on the ignition.
- Press the [
CAR] function button .
- Select
Systems in the CAR menu .
- Select
Tire pressure mon itoring .
-Select Sto re curr. tire pressure s~ page 329, fig . 259 .
All pressure warning indicators in the display will be canceled.
Following each intentional change in specified pressures, tire pres­
sures must be resaved . After the
pressures are saved, the tire pressure monitoring system
measures the c urrent tire pressures and saves them as the new spec­
ified pressures .

• The tire pressure is shown on the tire pressure label. On USA vehi­
cles, the tire pressure label is located on the driver's side B-pillar. On
Canada veh icles, the tire pressure label is located either on the
driver's side B-pillar or inside the fuel filler flap . The tire pressure
label lists the recommended cold t ire inflation pressures for the
vehicle at its maximum capacity weight and the tires that were on
your vehicle at the time it was manufactured. For recommended tire
pressures for normal load conditions, please see chapter
=> page 310.
• The tire pressure monitoring system helps the driver to keep an
eye on tire p ressures. But the driver still has the responsib ility for
maintaining the correct tire pressure .
• If your veh icle is eq uipped w ith a standard spare ti re*, it must be
inflated to the maximum pressure specified for the vehicle .•

Changing a wheel
When you change a wheel, the new tire must be initial ­
ized.
Turn on the ignit ion .
- Press the
I CAR I function but ton .
- Select
Systems in the CAR menu.
- Select
Tire pre ssure mon itoring .

Programming is necessary:

• If tires with new wheel sensors are used .
All pressure wa rning and system malfunction indicators in the display
will be canceled .
I f a wheel change has been made , it is necessary to complete the
Initializ e wheel s function .
The tire pressure monitor ing system is not available during the
prog ramming process and no p ressure and temperat ure val ues are
displayed on the MM I display .
After you have selected the function, th e new whe els are
programmed and the act ua l pressures are stored . Th is learn ing phase
can take up to 20 minutes d riving time .•

Malfunctions
A malfunction can have various causes.

If the warning ligh t in the inst rument cl uste r flashes fo r approxi -
mately one minu te and then remain continuously illuminated and
additionally the => fig . 261 symbol appears in the d is p lay , the
tire pressure monito ring system is not available . This can have various
causes.
Vehicle OP-eration
• If the message appears at the end of the learning process, the
system c annot recognize the whee ls ins talled o n the veh icle . T his can
be because one or more wheels without a wheel sensor were
installed .
• A wheel sensor or other component may have failed .
• T he sy stem has detected more than S whee ls wi th whee l sensors
i n the ve hicle, for example when carry ing snow tires.
• A tire was changed but the
Init ialize wheel s function was not acti­
vated =>
page 330.
• Audi rep lacemen t pa rts were no t used .
• If snow chai ns are be ing used, system function can be compro ­
mised due to the shielding properties of the chains .
• Th e tire press ure monitor in g sys tem may not be ava ilable because
of a radio malfunction.
• Transmitters wi th the same freq uen cy, s uch as radio headphones
in the vehicle or radio equipment, can cause a temporary disrupt io n
of the sys tem throug h ex cessive elect romag net ic fie lds.
• Eliminate the interference if possible/if you can and then re-start
t he
Initialize wheels f unc tion. If the wa rning light comes on again,
you should contact your authori zed Audi dealer immediately to have
the problem corrected .
• Do not use commercially ava ilab le tire sealants . Otherw ise, the
elect rical components of the tire pressure mon itor ing system w ill no
longer work proper ly and the sensor for the t ire pressure monitoring
system will have to be replaced by a qualified workshop. •
