Introduction
-Clean the roof at the contact points for the roof rack in
order to avoid paint scratches.
- Observe the ident ifying marks on the roof rack for front
and rear, left and right.
Roof rack front
- Open the front doors => & .
- Center the front of the roof rack in the two stamped
marks at the front of the roof=> fig. 89

Using the enclosed torque wrench, tighten the

& WARNING
• Always follow the instructions provided by the roof rack manu
facturer.
• When installing the roof rack with the vehicle doors open,
watch out for other traffic -there is the risk of an accident.

• Make certain that the feet of the roof rack are sitting exactly in
the four stamped marks -otherwise you risk an accident!
• After you have driven a few miles, and particularly during long
trips, inspect the attaching screws to make certain they are tight.
• Do not make any modification to the roof rack -you increase
the risk of an accident. •

on the roof rails.

S tronic transmission

Introduction
Your vehicle is equipped with a S tronic transmission, also called a
double -clutch system/transmission.
Power is transferred between the engine and the transmission by means of two independent clutches. They replace the torque
converter of conventional automatic transmissions and al low the
vehic le to accelerate without a noticeable break in the power flow .

Selector lever positions
All the selector lever positions are explained in this
section .

The se lector lever position is shown in the instrument cluster
display by highlighting the appropriate symbol.
P -Park lock
In this position the gears are mechanically locked .
The park lock must only be engaged w ith the vehic le
stationary

To engage P and to remove the lever from this position, you must
depress the release button (button in the selector lever handle)
and
simultaneously you must step on the brake pedal.
R -reverse
In this position, reverse is engaged.
Reverse gear must only be engaged with the vehic le
stationary and
the engine running at id le speed =>& .
To engage R, you have to depress the release button
and simulta
neously step on the brake pedal. In the R position, the back -up lights
i ll uminate with the ignition on.
N -N eutra l
The transmission is in neutra l in this pos ition.
D -Norm al po siti on fo r dri vin g fo rw ard
In this position, the forward gears are automatical ly shifted up and
down, depending on engine load and vehicle speed.
To engage S from
N, the brake peda l must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary=>& .
In certain circumstances (driving in the mountains for examp le) it
can be beneficial to switch temporarily to the manual shift program
=>
page 118 in order to adjust the gear ratios to driving conditions
manually .
S -S po rt setting
The S setting should be selected for sporting driving. The power
reserves of the engine can be fully exploited through later upshifts .
To engage S from N, the brake peda l must be depressed at speeds
below 5 km/h or when the vehicle is stationary=>& . .,_

to the other drive wheel or wheels (all-whee l drivel. This is done up
to a speed of about 60 mph (100 km/h). Noises from the brake
system signal that wheel spin is being controlled.
Driving off
When driving off, always be sure to keep road conditions in mind as
you accelerate. If one drive wheel spins because it is on a surface
with less grip, gradually increase the pressure on the accelerator
pedal until the car starts to move. The wheel less able to transfer
power spins .
Overheating of brakes
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating if
subjected to excessive loads, the EDL cuts out temporarily. The
vehicle remains operational and behaves in the same way as a
vehicle without EDL.
As soon as the brake has cooled down, EDL switches on again auto
matically.
& WARNING
• When accelerating on slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow,
always be careful when depressing the accelerator pedal. Even
with the EDL working, the drive wheels can spin and reduce your
ability to control your car. -Risk of crash!
• The increased safety afforded by EDL does not mean that you
can take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.

If a fault occurs in the ABS, the EDL is also not functioning. This is
indicated by the ABS warning light=>
page 16. •
Anti-Slip Regulat ion System (ASR)
The Anti-Slip Regulation System prevents the driven
wheels from spinning when the car is accelerating.
General notes
The Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) is integrated in the electronic
stabilization program (ESP) . When the vehicle starts up and acceler
ates, the wheels are prevented from spinning by adjusting the
engine power to match the amount of grip available from the road
surface.
How the system works
ASR performs automatically, i.e. without the driver's intervention.
With the aid of the ABS sensors=>
page 192, ASR monitors the
speed of the driven wheels. If the wheels start to spin, the engine
torque is reduced automatically until the tires find enough grip to
lock onto the road surface. The system is active across the entire
speed range.
Th e ASR works in conjunction with the ABS. If a malfunction should
occur in the ABS, the ASR will also be out of action.
Activating
The ESP is automatically activated when the engine is started and it
performs a self -test. You can activate a deactivated ASR if required
by pressing the=>
page 188, fig. 158 button. When it is activated,
the message
ESP/ASR on appears briefly in the display.
Deactivating
You can deactivate the ASR if required by pressing the button (for
less than 3 seconds)=>
page 188, fig . 158. With the ASR deactivated,
the ESP check light comes on, see=>
page 13. The message ASR off
appears in the display as well.
The ASR should normally be activated all the time . Only in certain
exceptional situations when some slip is desirable does it make
sense to deactivate the ASR. Examples:

Wheel bolts
Wheel bolts mus t alwa ys be tighte ned to t he correct

The design of wheel bo lts is matched to the factory installed rims. If
di fferent r ims are fitted , th e cor rect whe el bo lts wi th the rig ht l ength
and c orrec tly shaped bolt heads must be used . This ens ures that
w he els a re fitted se cur ely and th at the bra ke syste m functi ons
correctl y.
In cer ta in c ircums tances, yo u ma y not use w hee l bolts fr om a
differ ent vehicle - even if it is the same mo del.
& WARNING
Improperly tightened or maintained wheel bolts can become loose
causing loss of control, a collision and serious personal injury.
• Always keep the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel hubs
clean so the wheel bolts can turn easily and be properly tightened .
• Never grease or oil the wheel bolts and the threads in the wheel
hubs. They can become loose while driving if greased or oiled,
even if tightened to the specified torque .
• Only use wheel bolts that belong to the rim being installed .
• Never use different wheels bolts on your vehicle.
• Always maintain the correct tightening torque for the wheel
bolts to reduce the risk of a wheel loss .
If the tightening torque of
the wheel bolts is too low, they can loosen and come out when the
vehicle is moving . If the tightening torque is too high, the wheel
bolts and threads can be damaged and the wheel can become
loose .

The s pecified torque for the wheel bolts is 90 ft lb ( 120 N m) with a
to lerance o f± 7,4 ft lb(± 1 0 Nm). Torque whee l bolt s diago nally.
After chang ing a whee l, the torque must be checked as soon as possible with a torque wrench
-preferably by an authorized Audi

Low aspect ratio tires
You r A ud i is fac tory-eq uippe d w ith low aspect ra tio tire s. T hese tire s
have been thorough ly t ested and b een se lected specifica lly for your
mod el for thei r su p erb pe rf or manc e, r oad f eel an d ha nd ling under
a variety of driving con ditions . As k your authorized Audi d ealer for
m ore de ta ils.
The low aspect rat io o f th ese t ires is indicated by a numer al of 55 or
less in the t ire's size designation. The numeral rep resents the ratio
o f t he t ire's s idewa ll he ig ht in rel ati on to it s tread w idt h ex pressed
in percentage . Conventiona l tires have a height/width ratio of 60 or
mo re.
The performan ce of low -aspe ct-ratio tires is particularly sensitive to
improper inflation pressure . It is therefore important that low
aspect ratio tires are inflated to the specified pressure and that the
inflat ion pressure is regularly checked and ma intained. Tire pres
sures should be checked at least once a month and always before a
long trip=> page 249, "Checking tire pressure" .
What you can do to avoid tire and rim damage L ow aspect ratio tires can be damaged mo re easily by impact with
po tho les, cu rbs, gull ies o r rid ges o n th e road, particular ly if the t ire
is underinf lated .
I n or der to mini mize th e occurrence of i mpac t da mag e to t he tires
of your vehicle, we recommend that you observe the fol lowing
pr ecaut ions :
• Always ma intain recom mended inflatio n pr essu res . C heck you r
ti re p ressu re eve ry 2,000 mi les (3,000 k m) and add a ir if neces sary .
• D rive carefully on roads with potho les, deep gullies or ridges.

corroded and difficult to turn, then they should be replaced before
you check the tightening torque .

The wheel covers must be removed to access the wheel
bolts.

- Pull the full wheel cov er off manually.

- First press the full wh eel cove r onto the rim at the cut -out
prov ided for the valve. Then engage the outer edge of the
f ull whe el cover in the steel rim. •

Loosening and tightening the wheel bolts
The wheel bolts must be loosened before raising the
vehicle.

- Fit the wheel bolt wrench over the wheel bolt and push it
down as far as it will go .
- Close your grip around the
end of the wrench handle for
maximum torque and turn the wheel bolts

Tightening
-Fit the wheel bolt wrench over the wheel bolt and push it
down as far as it will go.
- Close your grip around the

& WARNING
• Using force without control to speed the wheel change up can
cause the vehicle to slip off the jack and cause serious personal
injuries.
• Do not loosen the wheel bolts more than one turn before you
raise the vehicle with the jack. -Risk of injury!
[ i] Tips
• Never try and use the hexagonal socket in the handle of the
screwdriver to loosen or tighten the wheel bolts.
• If a wheel bolt sits very tight, you may find it easier to loosen by
carefully pushing down on the end of the wheel bolt wrench with
one foot only . As you do, hold on to the car to keep yourself stable
and take care not to slip.•
Raising the vehicle
The vehicle must be lifted with the jack first before the
wheel can be removed.

Tires with unidirectional tread design

Notes on wheel change

ti res an d wheels" if yo u are g oin g to use a spare ti re wh ich is
d iff ere nt from the tires o n your vehi cle .
A fter you change a tire:
• Check the tire pressure on the spare immediately after
mounting.
• Have the wheel bolt tightening torque checked with a torque
wrench as soon as possible by your authorized Audi dealer or a qualified service station .
• On steel and alloy wheel rims, the wheel bolts are correctly tight
ened with a torque of 90 ft lb (120 Nml.
• If you notice while changing a tire that the wheel bolts are
corroded and difficult to turn , then they should be replaced before
you check the tightening torque.
• Replace the flat t ire with a new one and have it installed on your
vehicle as soon as possible . Remount the wheel cover .
Until then, drive with extra care and at reduced speeds.
& WARNING
• If you are going to equip your vehicle with tires or rims which
differ from those which were factory installed , then be sure to read
the information
=> page 254 , "New tires and replacing tires and
wheels ".
• Always make sure the damaged wheel or even a flat tire and
the jack and tool kit are properly secured in the luggage compart
ment and are not loose in the passenger compartment .
• In an accident or sudden maneuver they could fly forward,
injuring anyone in the vehicle .
• Always store damaged wheel , jack and tools securely in
luggage compartment . Otherwise , in an accident or sudden
maneuver they could fly forward, causing injury to passengers in
the vehicle . •
