Instruments and warning/indicator lights
Engine cold
As long as the needle remains at the left end of the gauge, the
engine still has not reached its operating temperature . Avoid high
engine speeds, heavy engine loads and heavy throttle.
Normal temperature
When the engine has reached its operating temperature, the needle
will move into the middle of the gauge and remain there. If the engine is working hard at high outside temperatures, the needle
may turn further to the right. This is no cause for concern as long as
the
_ f_ warning light in the instrument cluster does not illuminate.
When the
-L warning light starts to flash, this can mean one of two
things: either the coolant
temperature is too high, or the coolant
level is too low=> page 30.
& WARNING
• Always observe the warning in=> page 215, "Engine compart ­
ment" before opening the engine hood and checking the engine
coolant level.
• Never open the engine hood if you see or hear steam, or if you
see engine coolant dripping from the engine compartment. You
could burn yourself. Let the engine cool off first so that you cannot
hear or see any steam or engine coolant.

• Mounting additional lights or accessories in front of the air inlets
reduces the cooling effect of the radiator . At high outside tempera ­
tures or high engine load, the engine could overheat.
• The front spoiler has been designed to properly distribute the
cooling air when the vehicle is moving. If the spoiler is damaged,
this could reduce the cooling effect and the engine could then over ­
heat. Ask your authorized Audi dealer for assistance. •
Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge works only when the ignition is on.
When the needle reaches the red area, the warning light in the
instrument cluster will illuminate=>
page 32 I). This means you
have approximately 1.8 gallons (7 liters) of fuel left in the tank.
Time
to refuel!
The total tank capacity of your vehicle is listed in=> page 296,
"Data".
0 Note
Never run the tank completely dry! An irregular supply of fuel can
cause engine misfiring and fuel could enter into the exhaust
system. The catalytic converter could then overheat and be
damaged .•
Speedometer with odometer
The speedometer shows you the vehicle speed, and the
odometer shows you how many miles (kilometers) you
have driven.

The odometer and trip odometer are located inside the speedom­
eter.

Driver information display
Driver information appears in the display when a defective light
bulb is reported by the defective light bulb warning~
page 34,
when the brake pads are worn and before you engage a gear on
vehicles with S tronic.
In addition, driver information may appear when a red symbol
flashes in the driver display .
To display Driver information
As an example, the~ symbol appears in the display. If you now
press the button~
page 29, fig. 21 , the following driver message
appears in the display:
Switch off engine and check oil level
The driver message in the display goes out after about 5 seconds.
You can display the driver message again by briefly pressing the
button. •
Brake system malfunction
BRAKE (USA models) /((D) (Canada models )
The indicator light flashes if the brake fluid level is too
low, if there is a malfunction in the ABS system or when
the parking brake is engaged.
If the BRA KE/(CD) symbol flashes in the display with the
parking brake released, there is a malfunction in the brake
system. In addition to the symbol, one of two messages
appears in the display:
Stop vehicle and check brake fluid
ABS fault
! See owner's manual
- Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
- Obtain professional assistance.
USA models: if there is a malfunction in the ABS system, the • c:::;
warning/indicator light illuminates along with the BRAKE system
malfunction warning/indicator light~

Canada models: if there is a malfunction in the ABS system, the
warning/indicator light illuminates together with the
CCD) brake

Parking brake set
The parking brake warning light Brake /«D> (Canada models) illumi ­
nates when the parking brake is set . In addition, a warning tone will
sound after you have driven for longer than 3 seconds and faster
than 3 mph (5 km/h).
& WARNING
• Always observe the warnings in~ page 215, "Engine compart­
ment", before opening the engine hood and checking the brake
fluid.
• Driving with low brake fluid is a safety hazard! Stop the car and
get professional assistance.
• If the brake system warning/indicator light illuminates
together with the ABS warning/indicator light, then the ABS
system is malfunctioning. The rear wheels could quickly lock up
when you apply the brakes. This could lead to loss of control and
your vehicle could slide! Drive carefully to the nearest authorized
Audi dealer and have the malfunction corrected. •
Engine cooling system malfunction _t_
A malfunction in the engine cooling system must be
repaired as soon as possible.
When the J_ symbol in the display flashes, then either the
engine coolant temperature is too high, or the coolant level

is too low. In addition to the symbol, the following message
also appears in the display:
Switch off engine and check coolant level
-Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
- Turn off the engine.
- Check coolant level
=> page 233.
-Add coolant if necessary=> page 234 .
-Continue driving only after the engine coolant
warning/indicator light goes out.
- Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if
necessary.
If the engine coolant level is correct, then the radiator fan may be
the cause of the malfunction.
If the generator warning/indicator light should also illuminate
=> page 14, then the fan belt may be damaged.
_& WARNING
• If your vehicle should break down for mechanical or other
reasons, park at a safe distance from moving traffic, turn off the
engine and turn on the hazard warning lights
=> page 56, "Emer­
gency flasher A".
• Never open the hood if you see or hear steam or coolant
escaping from the engine compartment -you risk being scalded.
Wait until you can no longer see or hear steam or coolant escaping.
• The engine compartment of any vehicle is a dangerous area.
Before you perform any work in the engine compartment, turn off
the engine and allow it to cool. Follow the warning stickers
=> page 215, "Engine compartment".

Driver information display

Do not continue driving if the -F-symbol illuminates . There is a
malfunction in the engine cooling system -you could damage your
engine. •
Engine oil pressure malfunction "I=:,:
The red engine oil pressure warning symbol requires
immediate service or repair.
If the 't::r. symbol appears in the display and flashes, the oil
pressure is too low. In addition to the symbol, the following
message also appears in the display:
Switch off engine and check oil level
-Pull off the road and stop the vehicle.
- Shut the engine down.
- Check the engine oil level=>
page 229.
-Contact your authorized Audi dealer for assistance if
necessary.
Engine oil level too low
If the engine oil level is too low, top off oil to the proper level
=> page 230.
Engine oil level OK
If the '1::7: symbol starts flashing again even though the engine oil
level checks OK on th e dipstick,
do not start driving again and do not
let the engine run at idle .
Instead, contact your authorized Audi
dealer for assistance . ..

Opening and closing
Anti -theft alarm system
The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if anyone attempts
to break int o the vehicle.

T he an ti- t heft alarm system triggers an audible alarm and turns on
t he emergency flasher if an unauthorized interference with the
vehic le is sensed by the system .
How is the anti-th eft alarm sy ste m swi tched on ?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched on when you lock th e
dr iver's door manually using the fold -out key, or when you use the
remo te control. The sys tem is activated approximately 30 seconds
af ter the vehicle is locked . The indicator light => fig. 36 starts
flashing rapid ly for 30 seconds and then blinks slowly .
How is th e a nti-theft alarm system swi tch ed off?
The anti-the ft alarm sys tem is switched off wh en you use the remote
control to un lock your vehic le . If you do not open a do or within 30
seconds after you have unlocked with the remote control, the
vehic le will lock itself again auto matically.
If you lock just the driver's door using your key , the front
passenger 's door and the rear lid remain locked.
Wh en will th e anti th eft alarm s yst em b e trigg ered?
When the v ehicle is locked, the alarm system mo nitors and pro tects
the fo llowing parts of the vehicle :
• engine compartment
• l uggage compartment
• doors
• ignition
When the system is activa ted, the alarm will be triggered if one of
the doors, the engine hood or the rear lid are opened , or if the igni­
tion is turned on or the radio removed.
The anti-theft alarm system wil l also go off when the battery is
disconnected .
You can also t rigger the alarm by pressing the PANIC button on your
remo te -contro l key . This wi ll a lert other people in case of emer­
gency. Press the
PANIC bu tton again t o turn off the alarm.
How i s th e a nti-theft alarm switched off when
triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you unlock the vehic le using
the remo te -control key o r when the ignition is switched on . The
alarm wi ll also switch itself off when it comes to the end of its cycle .
Emergen cy flashe r
The emergency flasher will b link briefly when the doors, engine
hood and rear lid are properly closed.
If the emergency flashers do not blink, check the doors , engine hood
and rear lid to make sure they are properly closed . If you close a
door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti -theft a larm switched on,
the emergency flashers wil l b link only after you have closed the
door or lid.

Fo r the anti- theft a larm system to function proper ly, make sure a ll
vehic le doors and windows are closed before leaving the vehicle .•

& WARNING
• Never place the selector lever in the R or P po sition while the
vehicle is moving -risk of an accident !
• W ith the engine running , it is necessary to hold the vehicle with
the foot brake in all selector lever positions (except P and Nl,
because even at idle speed the transfer of power is never
c ompletely interrupted -the vehicle ''creeps ". If the vehicle is
stationary and the transmission is engaged , the engine should
never be speeded up unintentionally (e.g . manually from under the
hood). Otherwi se the vehicle will immediately start to move -
sometimes even if the parking brake is firmly applied - risk of an
accident!
• Before you or other persons open the hood and work on a
running engine , the selector lever must be moved to P and the
parking brake applied firmly - risk of an accident! Follow the
warning stickers~
page 215 , "Engine compa rtment" .

Automatic selector lever lock ~
The selector lever is locked in the P and N positions when the igni­
t ion is on . T o move t he lev er fr om these p ositio ns t he d riv er mus t
depress the bra ke peda l. As a reminder to the driver, the fol lowing
w arning appears i n th e i ns trume nt cluster dis play when th e se lec tor
is in P and N:

• In a side collision , side airbag s will not function properly if
s ensors cannot correctly measure increasing ai r pre ssure inside
the doors when air escapes through larger , unclo sed open ings in
the door panel.
-Never drive with interior door trim panels removed.
- Never drive when parts have been removed from the in side
door panel and the openings they leave have not been properly
closed .
- Never drive when loud speakers in the doors have been
removed unless the spea ker hole s have been properly clo sed .
- Alway s make certain that openings are covered or filled if
add itional speakers o r other equipment is installed in the
inside door panels .
- Always have work on the doors done by an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop . •
Side curtain airbags
Description of curtain airbags
The curtain airbags can provide supplemental protection
to properly res trained occupan ts.

T he side curtain airbags are located on both sides of the interior
above the fr ont and rear side windows=> fig. 145 . They are identi ­
fied by the word "AI RBAG" on the windsh ield frame and the center
r oof pi llar.
T he side curtain airbag system supple men ts the safety belts and
can help to reduce the risk of injury for occupants ' heads and upper
torso o n the s ide of the vehicle that is struck in a side coll ision . The
side curtain airbag inf lates only in side impacts and on ly when the
vehic le accele ra tion regis tered by the control unit is hig h enoug h. I f
this rate is below the reference va lue programmed into the control
unit, the side air bags w ill no t be tr igge red, even thoug h the car may
be badly damaged as a result of the co llision. It is not possible to
de fine an ai rbag triggering range that will cover eve ry possible
angle of impac t, since the circumstances wil l
vary considerably
be tween one collision and an other. Importa nt factors include, fo r
e xample, the nature (hard or soft) of the i mpacting object, the ang le
of impact , vehicle speed, etc.=>

Aside fr om their no rmal safety func tio n, sa fety belts work to hel p
keep the driver or front passenger in position in the event of a colli­
sion s o that the si de c urtain ai rbags ca n prov ide prote ction.
T he airbag system is not a substitute for your safety belt. Rathe r, it
is part of the overall occupant restraint system in your vehicle.
A lways remember that t he airba g system ca n on ly help to protect
you if you are wearing your safety belt and wearing it properly. This
is ano the r reason why you s hould a lways wear your safety belts, not
just because the law requires you to do so=>

I t is important to remember that while the side curtain airbag
system is designed to he lp reduce the like lihood of serious injuries,
other injuries, for examp le, sw elli ng, bruising, and minor abrasions
can also be associated with these airbags upon deployment .

• Never try to remove dirt, mud or dust if the surface of the vehicle
is dry. Never use a dry cloth or sponge, since this cou ld scratch your
veh ic le's paint or w indows .
• Never wash your car in bright sunlight. Drops of water act as
magnifying lenses and may damage your paint.
• When you wash your car in t he winter : if you rinse your vehic le
with a hose, be careful not to aim the stream of water directly at
locks, or at door or hatch openings -they can freeze shut.
• Never use sponges designed to remove insects, or any kitchen
scouring s ponges or simila r pr oducts. They can damage your paint
finish .
• Never use a dry cloth or sponge to c lean the head ligh ts. O nly use
wet cloths or sponges to prevent scratches . It is best to use soapy
water.

Washing your vehicle with a power washer
Cleaning the exterior of your car wi th a high -p ressure
power washer is safe as l ong as y ou observe a few simple
rules .

-Always follow the operati ng inst ructions fo r th e pow er
washer.
Make sure that the jet on t he spray hose produces a "fan
sha ped sp ray".

When cleaning the vehicle with a power washer always follow the
opera ting instructions. Th is appl ies particularly to the
operating
pre ssure
and the spraying distance . Maintain a sufficient distance
t o so ft ma teria ls such as rubber hoses a nd sound/vibrat ion dead ­
ening materia ls (particularly on the underside of the engine hood).
Do not use a jet which sp rays water in a
direct stream o r one tha t

Water temperature shou ld not exceed 140 °F (60 °Cl.
& WARNING
Never wash tires with a jet that sp ray s water in a dire ct stream .
This could c ause invi sible damage to the tire s and weake n them ,
even if the spray is from a relatively long distan ce and for a short
time . Damaged and weakened tires can fail and cau se ac cident s
a nd person al injury.

To avoid damaging your vehic le, always make sure that there is
suffic ient distance between the spray hea d and so ft m ateria ls like
rubber hoses, plastic parts and sound -deadening materials . Never
aim the spray head at the same p oint for a l ong time . This a lso
applies to cleaning head lights and painted bumpers . Remember:
t he c loser the n ozzle is to the surface of the materia l, the greater the
stress on the material. •

The engine hood is released from inside the vehicle.
- Open the driver's door .

- Pull the release lever on the left under the instrument
panel => fig. 162 in direction of the arrow.

Before opening the engine hood , make sure that the wind­
shield wipers are folded flat against the windshield. Other­
wise, they could damage the paint on the hood.
Pull the release lever=> fig. 163 in the direction indicated
by the arrow. This release the hook under the hood.
- Open the hood all the way.
& WARNING
Hot engine coolant can burn you!
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood. •
