to the other drive wheel or wheels (all-whee l drivel. This is done up
to a speed of about 60 mph (100 km/h). Noises from the brake
system signal that wheel spin is being controlled.
Driving off
When driving off, always be sure to keep road conditions in mind as
you accelerate. If one drive wheel spins because it is on a surface
with less grip, gradually increase the pressure on the accelerator
pedal until the car starts to move. The wheel less able to transfer
power spins .
Overheating of brakes
To prevent the disc brake of the braked wheel from overheating if
subjected to excessive loads, the EDL cuts out temporarily. The
vehicle remains operational and behaves in the same way as a
vehicle without EDL.
As soon as the brake has cooled down, EDL switches on again auto
matically.
& WARNING
• When accelerating on slippery surfaces, such as on ice or snow,
always be careful when depressing the accelerator pedal. Even
with the EDL working, the drive wheels can spin and reduce your
ability to control your car. -Risk of crash!
• The increased safety afforded by EDL does not mean that you
can take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.

If a fault occurs in the ABS, the EDL is also not functioning. This is
indicated by the ABS warning light=>
page 16. •
Anti-Slip Regulat ion System (ASR)
The Anti-Slip Regulation System prevents the driven
wheels from spinning when the car is accelerating.
General notes
The Anti-Slip Regulation System (ASR) is integrated in the electronic
stabilization program (ESP) . When the vehicle starts up and acceler
ates, the wheels are prevented from spinning by adjusting the
engine power to match the amount of grip available from the road
surface.
How the system works
ASR performs automatically, i.e. without the driver's intervention.
With the aid of the ABS sensors=>
page 192, ASR monitors the
speed of the driven wheels. If the wheels start to spin, the engine
torque is reduced automatically until the tires find enough grip to
lock onto the road surface. The system is active across the entire
speed range.
Th e ASR works in conjunction with the ABS. If a malfunction should
occur in the ABS, the ASR will also be out of action.
Activating
The ESP is automatically activated when the engine is started and it
performs a self -test. You can activate a deactivated ASR if required
by pressing the=>
page 188, fig. 158 button. When it is activated,
the message
ESP/ASR on appears briefly in the display.
Deactivating
You can deactivate the ASR if required by pressing the button (for
less than 3 seconds)=>
page 188, fig . 158. With the ASR deactivated,
the ESP check light comes on, see=>
page 13. The message ASR off
appears in the display as well.
The ASR should normally be activated all the time . Only in certain
exceptional situations when some slip is desirable does it make
sense to deactivate the ASR. Examples:

• Before winter sets in, have the coolant checked to see if the
coolant additive in your vehicle is sufficient to meet the climate
conditions. This is especially important if you live in a region where
the winter is extremely cold. If necessary, increase the proportion of
coolant additive to 60%.
• When adding coolant additive to your cooling system,
remember:
-We recommend using only coolant additive G12+ + (check the
label) for your vehicle. This coolant additive is available at autho
rized Audi dealers. Other types of antifreeze can significantly
reduce corrosion protection . The resulting corrosion can cause a
loss of coolant and serious engine damage .
• Do not add any type of radiator leak sealant to your vehicle's
engine coolant. Adding radiator repair fluid may adversely affect the
function and performance of your cooling system and cou ld result
in damage not covered by your New Vehicle Limited Warranty .•
Checking the engine coolant level
The engine coolant level can be checked with a quick
glance.

Before you check anything in the engine compartment,
always read and heed all WARNINGS==> & in "Working in
the engine compartment" on
page 224.
Turn off the ignition .
Read the engine coolant level from the coolant expan
sion tank==> fig. 169. With a cold engine, the coolant level
should be between the "min" and "max" markings. When
the engine is warm, the level may be slightly above the
" max" marking .
The location of the coolant expansion tank can be seen in the
engine compartment illustration=>
page 225.
To obtain an accurate reading, the engine must be switched off .
The expansion tank in your vehicle is equipped with an electric
coolant level sensor.
When the coolant level is too low, the warning light in the Auto
Check System =>
page 30will blink until you add coolant and the
level has been restored to normal. Even though there is an electric
coolant level sensor, we still recommend you check the coolant level
from time to time.
Coolant loss
Coolant loss may indicate a leak in the cooling system. In the event
of coolant loss, the cooling system should be inspected immedi
ately by your authorized Audi dealer. It is not enough merely to add
coolant.
In a
sealed system, losses can occur only if the boiling point of the
coolant is exceeded as a result of overheating.

Do not add any type of radiator leak sea lant to your vehicle's engine

m anuf actur e date
This is the tire's "seria l number" . It begins with the letters "DOT"
and indicates that the tire meets all federal standards . The next two
numbers or letters indicate the plant where it was manufactured,
and the last four numbers represent the week and year of manufac-

ture. For example, the numbers 2209 mean that the tire was
produced in the 22nd week of 2009 . The other numbers are
marketing codes that may or may not be used by the tire manufac
turer . This information is used to contact consumers if a tire defect
requires a recall.
Audi Original tire
T ires with the identification "AO" or "RO" have been specially
matched with your Audi . We recommend using o nly these tires
because they meet the highest standards regarding safety and
driving characteristics when used correctly. Your authorized Audi
dea ler will glad ly provide you with more information.
Maximu m Load Rating
This number indicates the maximum load in kilograms and pounds
that can be carried by the tire .

This number is the greatest amount of air pressure that should ever
be put in the tire under norma l driv ing condit ions.

The wheels on your vehicle are equipped with a sensor which
constantly monitors the air pressure inside the tire, and then trans
mits this information to the tire pressure monitoring system* . If you
are going to replace the whee l rims on your vehicle, make sure the
new rims also have these sensors. The sensors must be compatible
with the tire pressure monitoring system* on your veh icle.
I f you install rims that do not have the sensors or have sensors
which are not compatible, then the tire pressure monitoring
system* wil l not work properly . In this case, the tire pressure moni-

• For technical reasons, it is not generally possible to use the
wheel rims from other vehicles. This can hold true for wheels of the
same vehicle type.
• If the spare tire is different from the tires that you have mounted
on your vehicle (for example winter tires or wide profile t ires), then
use the spare tire for a short period of time only and drive with extra
care. Replace the f lat tire with the tire matching the others on your
vehic le as soon as possib le.
• If you put different whee ls and tires on your vehic le (e .g. winter
whee ls and tires), you must be certain that the wheels and tires are
compatible with the tire pressure monitoring system*. Otherwise
the system will register a malfunction and a fault message wi ll be

• When installing new tires, be careful not to damage the valves or
tire pressure monitoring system* sensors.
• Never drive without the valve stem cap. The valves could get
damaged.
• If the sensors must be replaced, then the valve must also be

ments in addition to these grades.
T rea d w ear
The
tread wear grade is a comparative rating based on the wear rate
of the tire when tested under controlled condit ions on a specified
government test course .
Fo r example, a tire graded 150 wou ld wear one and one hal f (1 1/2)
times as well on the government course as a tire graded 100.
The relative performance of tires depends upon the actua l condi
tions of their use, however, and may depart significantly from the norm due to variations in driving habits, service practices and differ
ences in road characteristics and climate .
Tr act ion
The
traction grades, from highest to lowest, are AA, A, Band C.
T hose grades represent the tire 's ability to stop on wet pavement as
measured under contro lled co nditions on specified government
test surfaces of asphalt and concrete. A tire marked C may have
poor traction performance

Temp erature
T he
temperature grades are A (the highest), B , and C , represent ing
the tire's resistance to the generation of heat and its abi lity to dissi
pate heat when tested under control led conditions on a specified
indoor laboratory test wheel.
Susta ined high temperature can cause the mater ial of the tire to
degenerate and reduce tire life, and excessive temperature can lead
to sudden tire failure~& .
T he grade C corresponds to a leve l of performance which a ll
passenger car tires must meet under the Federal Motor Vehicle

Safety Standard No. 109. Grades Band A represent higher levels of
performance on the laboratory test wheel than the minimum
required by law.
& WARNING
The traction grade assigned to this tire is based on straight-ahead
braking traction tests, and does not include acceleration,
cornering, hydroplaning or peak traction characteristics.
& WARNING
The temperature grade for this tire is established for a tire that is properly inflated and not overloaded. Excessive speed, underinfla
tion , or excessive loading, either separately or in combination, can
cause heat buildup and possible tire failure. •
Winter tires
Winter tires can improve vehicle handling on snow and
ice. At temperatures below 45 °F (7 °C) we recommend
changing to winter tires.
In some heavy snow areas, local governments may require true
winter or "snow" tires, those with very deeply cut tread. These tires
should only be used in pairs and be installed on all four wheels.
Make sure you purchase snow tires that are the same size and
construction type as the other tires on your vehicle.
I f your vehicle is equipped with all-wheel drive*, this will improve
traction during winter driving, even with the standard tires.
However, we strongly recommend that you always equip all four
wheels on your vehicle with correctly fitted winter tires or all-season
tires, when winter road conditions are expected . This also improves
the vehicle's braking performance and reduces stopping distances.
Summer tires provide less grip on ice and snow . Winter tires (snow tires) must always be fitted on all four wheels
.
Compatible tire pressure monitoring sensors* must be installed on
all four winter tires for the tire pressure monitoring system* to func
tion properly ~
page 256.
Ask your authorized Audi dealer or qualified workshop for permitted
winter tire sizes . Use only radial winter tires.
Winter tires lose their effectiveness when the tread is worn down to
a depth of 0.157 inch (4 mm) .
Only drive with winter tires under winter conditions. Summer tires
handle better when there is no snow or ice on the roads and the
temperature is above 45 °F (7 °C).
If you have a flat tire, see notes on spare wheel
~ page 254.
Please always remember that winter tires may have a lower speed
rating than the tires originally installed on your vehicle at the time
it was manufactured . Please see~
page 256, "Speed rating (letter
code)" for a listing of the speed rating letter codes and the
maximum speed at which the tires can be driven.

Winter tires have maximum speed limits that may be lower than
your vehicle's maximum speed. Always know the maximum speed
before driving off. Never drive faster than the speed permitted for
your specific winter tires. This will cause damage to the tires leading to an accident and serious personal injury to you and your
passengers.

Driving faster than the maximum speed for which the winter tires
on your vehicle were designed can cause tire failure including a

• When the tire pressure monitoring system warning light is lit,
one or more of your tires is significantly underinflated. You should
stop and check your tires as soon as possible , and inflate them to
the proper pressure as indicated on the vehicle's tire pressure
label =>
page 246 . Driving on a significantly underinflated tire
causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Underinfla
tion also is likely to impair the vehicle's handling and stopping
ability.
• Do not adjust tire pressure when tire temperature is excessive.
This could lead to serious tire damage and even cause the tire to
burst, with the additional danger of an accident.
~ For the sake of the environment
Driving with underinflated tires reduces fuel efficiency and tire
tread life.
[ i] Tips
• Each tire, including the spare , should be checked monthly when
the temperature of the tires is about the same as ambient air
temperature and set to the recommended inflation pressure as
specified on the tire pressure label=> page 246.
• Th e factory supplied spare wheel is equipped with a sensor for
the tire pressure monitoring system. As long as the spare wheel is
not mounted, the tire pressure of this tire will not be monitored.
• The tire pressure monitoring system helps the driver monitor tire
pressures, but the driver is still responsible for maintaining the
correct tire pressure.
• Tir e pressure must only be adjusted when the temperature of the
tires is about the same as ambient air temperature.
• When tires are replaced, the sensors and valves should not be
exchanged. The valve core, nut, valve sealing and seal washer (replacement kit) needs
to be replaced. If necessary, the valve and
the wheel electronics have to be replaced.
• Th e tire pressure monitoring system on your Audi was calibrated
using tires with the "AO" or "RO" identification. We recommend
using these tires.
• If you should put different wheels and tires on your vehicle (e.g.
winter wheels and tires), you must be certain that the wheels and
tires are compatible with the tire pressure monitoring system.
Otherwise the system will register a malfunction and a fault
message will be displayed. For more information, contact your
authorized Audi dealer.
• Adjust the tire pressure and store the pressure in the tire pres
sure monitoring system to the load you are carrying .

The yellow symbol appears in the event of a significant
loss of air pressure.

All pressure warning indicators in the display will be canceled.
Following each intentional change in specified pressures, tire pres
sures must be saved again .
After the pressures are saved, the tire pressure monitoring system measures the current tire pressures and saves them as the new
specified pressures.

• The tire pressure is shown on the tire pressure label. The tire
pressure label is located either on the driver's side 8 -pillar or on the
inside of the fuel filler flap . The tire pressure label lists the recom
mended cold tire inflation pressures for the vehicle at its maximum
capacity weight and the tires that were on your vehicle at the time
it was manufactured. For recommended tire pressures for normal
load conditions, p lease see chapter=>
page 246.
• The tire pressure monitoring system helps the driver monitor t ire
pressures, but the driver is still responsible for mainta ining the
correct tire pressure. •

Wheel change
If a wheel is changed, the wheels that were exchanged
have to be reprogrammed.
- Turn o n the igniti on.
- Press the button=>
page 265, fig. 179 for approximately 5
seco nds . You will he ar a beep and the symbol in the
button flas hes three times .
Programming is necessary :
• after the tires have been rotated on the vehicle, or the spare tire
is used, •
if tires with new wheel sensors are used .
All pressure warning indicators in the disp lay wil l be canceled . The
system malfunction error message will not disappear until the
vehic le is underway. With pressing the button=>
page 265, fig. 179,
t he reprogramming of the new sensors a nd storing of actua l pres
sures starts. This learning phase can take up to 10 minutes driving
time .
During the learning process the tire pressure monitoring system is

mately one minute and then remains continuously illuminated and
additiona lly the
T M => fig. 180 symbol appears in the display, the
tire pressure monitoring system is not available. This can have
various causes .
• I f the message appears at the end of the learning process, the
system cannot recognize the wheels installed on the vehicle . This
can be because one or more whee ls without a whee l sensor were
insta lled. ..,_

•
• A wheel sensor or other component may have failed.
• During initia lization the system has detected more than 4 wheels
on the vehicle, for example while driving next to another car with a
tire pressure monitoring system.
• A wheel change was made but the button
=> page 265, fig. 179
was not pressed.
• Audi Genuine Parts were not used for parts replacement.
• If snow chains are being used, system function can be compro
mised due to the shielding properties of the chains.
• The tire pressure monitoring system may not be available
because of a radio ma lfunction.
• Transmitters with the same frequency, such as radio head
phones in the veh icle or radio equipment, can cause a temporary
disruption of the system through excessive electromagnetic fields.
• Eliminate the interference if possible and then proceed as
follows: Turn off the engine for 20 minutes. Then drive another 10
min . If the warning light comes on again, you shou ld contact your
authorized Audi dealer immediately to have the problem corrected.
• Do not use commercially available tire sealants. Otherwise, the
e lectrical components of the tire pressure monitoring system will
no longer work properly and the sensor for the tire pressure moni
toring system will have to be replaced by an authorized Audi dealer
or other qualified workshop. •

Operation is subject to the following conditions:
• this device may not cause harmfu l interference, and
• this device must accept interference received, including interfer
ence that may cause undesired operation.
The receiver 5WK49069 uses the same schematic, assemb ly, layout
and PCB as 5WK49097 . 5WK49097 is a multi channe l receiver and 5WK49069 is a single channel receiver
. They only differ in: SAW
Filter V1 _4 was changed from A2C00038979 to V1 _2 A2C00032378,
I nductor L5_3 and L6_233nH were changed to L5 _2 and L6 _247nH.
BAND PASS FILTER V3_2 was changed from A2C00038762 to V3_3
A2C00036085. V10 : ATIC75 C1, A2C000029505 was changed to V10:
ATIC75 C2-Light, A2C000043220 . 01 14.246MHz A2C00037710 was
changed to 01 15.27MHz A2C00041280 . The BAND PASS FILTER V2
is not populated .
These modif ications were necessary to opt imize the characteristic
of the receiver.

the receiver is below the limit .•
