the windshield wipers are defective . Please go to an authorized Audi
dealer or qualified workshop to have the windshield wiper system

the over load protection . The sun shade can only be

G) -Interva l mode. To extend/shorten the wiper inte rvals, move the
sw itc h @ to the lef t/right. In vehic les wi th a rain sensor*, the w ind­
shield wipers are activated automatically starting at a speed of
2 mph (4 km/h). The higher the sensitivity of t he rain senso r* is set
(switch @to the right), the earlier the windshield wipers react to
moisture on the windshie ld.

© -C lean the windshie ld. To eliminate wate r droplets, the wind­
shie ld wiper performs one afterwipe operation after several
seconds whi le d riving. You can switch this function off by moving
the lever to pos ition © within 10 seconds o f the afterwipe opera ­
tion. The afterwipe function is reactivated the next time the ignition
is sw itched on.
Cleaning the headlights *. The headlight washer system * only func ­
tions when the light is switched on . The headlights are automati ­
ca lly c leaned the first time and every fifth time the lever is moved to
pos ition
® · They are also cleaned every time you hold the lever in
pos ition © for longer than 2 seconds.
& WARNING
• The rain sen sor is only intended to a ssi st the driver . The driver
is still responsible for manually swit ching the wiper s on according
to the visibility conditions .
• The windshield may not be treated with water -repelling wind ­
s hield coating agents . Unfavorab le conditions , such as wetnes s,
darkness , low sun , can result in increased glare . Wiper bl ade
c hatter is also po ssible .
• Properly functioning windshield w iper blades are required for a
clear view and safe driving

• I n the case of frost, check whether the windshie ld wiper blades
are frozen to the windshield . Switching on the windshield wipers
ca n damage the wiper b lades !
• P rior to using a car wash, the windshield wiper system must be
switched off (lever in posi tion 0). This prevents un intentiona l
switching on and damage to the windshield wiper system. .,.

Clear vision
[ i J Tips
• The windshield wipers are switched off when the ignition is
turned off. Activate the windshield wipers after the ignition is switched back on by moving the windshield wiper lever to any posi­
tion .
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades result in streaking. This
can affect the rain sensor * function. Check your windshield wiper
blades regularly.
• The rain sensor * is part of the interval wiping system. Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor*. To reactivate the sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
• The washer fluid nozzles of the windshield washer system are
heated at low temperatures when the ignition is on.
• When stopping temporarily, e.g. at a traffic light, the set speed of
the windshield wipers is automatically reduced by one speed .•
Service position
The windshield wiper blades are replaced in the service
position .

you bring the wiper arms to the service position

also avoid paint damage to the hood when working on the wipers in
this position .
• Off -the windshield wipers are moved to their initial position
again.

Never maneuver your vehicle with the front windshield wiper arms
raised since they will automatically be moved back to their basic
position above a speed of 3 mph (6 km/h) and can scratch the hood.

• You can also use the service position, for example, if you want to
protect the windshield from icing by using a cover . _,,

• The service position automatical ly switches to Off when you
opera te the windshie ld w iper lever, or speed exceeds 3 mph (6

twice a year. See your authori zed Audi dealer for replacem ent

• The windshield wiper blades must only be replaced when in the

on the hood or the windshie ld w iper motor.
• To prevent damage to the wiper system, always loosen blades
which are frozen to the windshield before operating wipers .
• To prevent damage to wiper blades, do not use gasoline, kero­
sene , paint thinner, or o ther so lven ts on or near the wiper blades.
• To prevent damage to the wiper arms or other components, do
not attempt to move the wipers by hand .

speed.
The ASR should normally be activated all the time . Only in certain
exceptional situations when some s lip is desirable does it make
sense to deactivate the ASR. Examples:
• when driving with tire chains
• when driving in deep snow or on loose ground and
• when rocking the vehicle loose after it has become stuck.
When the abnormal situation is over, you should activate the ASR
again.
& WARNING
The increased safety afforded by ASR does not mean that you can
take safety risks. Always adapt your driving style to the road
conditions and traffic situation.
[ i ] Tips
To ensure that the ASR works properly, al l four wheels must be fitted
with identical tires. Any differences in rol ling radius of the tires can
cause the system to reduce engine power when this is not desired.

What affects braking efficiency?
Operating conditions and driving habits
The brakes on today's automobiles are still subject to wear,
depending large ly on operating conditions and driving habits:::::>& .
On vehicles that are either driven mostly in stop-and-go city traffic
or are driven hard, the brake pads should be checked by your autho-

rized Audi dealer more often than specified in the Warranty & Main­
tenance booklet.
Fai lure to have your brake pads inspected can
resu lt in reduced brake performance .
On steep slopes, you shou ld use the braking effect of the engine.
This way, you prevent unnecessary wear on the brake system. If you
must use your brakes, do not hold the brakes down continuous ly.
Pump the brakes at intervals.
Moisture or road salt
If you are driving faster than 31 mph (50 km/h) and the windshield
wipers are on, the brake pads will briefly touch the brake discs in
regular intervals so as to improve reaction time when braking on
wet surfaces. You , the driver, wil l not notice anything.
Under certain conditions, for example, when driving th rough water
or very heavy rain , or even after washing your vehicle , the braking
effect can be reduced due to moisture (or in freezing conditions ice)
on the brake pads. A few careful brake applications should dry off
the brake pads or remove any ice coatings .
The ef fectiveness of the brakes can be reduced when the vehicle is
driven on a salt -covered road and the brakes are not used . Here too ,
you should clean off accumulated sa lt coating from brake discs and
pads with a few carefu l applications of the brake:::::>&.
Corrosion
There may be a tendency for dirt to build up on the brake pads and
corrosion to form on the discs if the car is not drive n regularly or
only for short trips with litt le use of the brakes .
I f the brakes are not used frequently, or if corrosion has formed on
the discs, it is advisable to clean off the pads and discs by braking
firm ly a few times from a moderately high speed:::::>& .
Faults in the brake system
If you shou ld notice a sudden increase in brake pedal travel, then
one of the two brake circuits may have failed:::::>&. ..,

T he best way to remove snow from windows and mirrors is to use a
brush . Use a non -abrasive
pla stic ice scraper -better still, a spray
deicer -to remove
ice from w indows and mirrors .
The windows must not be cleaned with insect remover or wax since
these can interfere with the function of the w inds hie ld w iper blades
(chatter).
O il, grease, or silicone res idue can be removed with
glas s cleaner or
silicone remover . However, wax residue requires the use of a
spec ially fo rmulated so lvent . Please contac t your authorized Audi
dea ler for advice on safe products for wax removal.
Windows should also be c leaned on the inside at regular interva ls .
Never dry windows with the same chamois that you use to dry
painted surfaces . Wax residue on the chamois can impair vision
t hrough the windows .
& WARNING
• Always read and heed all WARNING S and other information

• The windshield mu st not be treated with water -repellent m ate ­
rials . They can in crea se glare under poor v isibilit y conditio ns su ch
a s wetne ss , darkne ss , or when the sun i s low on the hori zon. In
additio n, they can cau se the windsh ield wipers to chatter .

• Never use warm or hot wat er to remove snow and ice from
windows a nd mirrors . This cou ld cause the glass to crack.
• T o prevent damage to the wires of the rear defogger, do not p lace
any adhesive stickers on the inside of the rear window over the
wires .
• To he lp prevent dirt from scratching the window, always scrape
in a forward direction -pushing the scraper away from you -never
back and forth. •
Water leaking from the inside of the rear windows may damage
sensitive e lec trical componen ts located eit her u nder the rear parcel
she lf or in the rear trunk area . Always ensure that water never leaks
t hrough the body section of the vehicle. You can do this by using
waterproof protection over the vehic le 's electrical components (e.g .
when instal ling window tinting).
• Damage or malfunction of e lectrical components due to water
damage or any other outside in fluence is no t cove red by the Audi

Weatherstrips
Complete car care includes the weatherstrips as well.
-App ly a suitable rubber cond itioner to the weatherstr ips
from t ime to ti me.

cone or coat them with talcum powder or g lycerin to retain the flex­
ibility of the rubber and to protect them against freezing in the

The engine hood is released from inside the vehicle.

Before opening the engine hood, make sure that the wind ­
shield wipers are flat against the windshield. Otherwise,
they could damage the paint on the hood.
Pull up on the release under the hood :::} fig. 221. This
releases the catch .
- Open the hood all the way:::}& .
& WARNING
Hot engine coolant can burn you.
• To reduce the risk of being burned, never open the hood if you
see or hear steam or coolant escaping from the engine compart­
ment. Wait until no steam or coolant can be seen or heard before
carefully opening the hood. •
