depending upon vehic le load and speed, road and weather condi­

Drive smoothly and keep a tookout ahead
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating.
- Avoid unnecessary accelerating and brak ing.
Vehicles use the most fuel when they are accelerating . If you antici ­
pate what is going to happen next, you will need to brake less and,
thus, accelerate less. Let the vehicle coast whenever possible -for
examp le when you see that the next traffic ligh t is red .
Avoid full thrott e
Driving at moderate speeds saves fuel and improves your
mileage.
- Try and keep we ll below your car's maximum speed.
Acce lerating gently reduces fuel consumption, engine wear, and
does not disturb the environment .
Fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and engine noise increase
disproportionately at high speeds. If you drive at approximate ly
three quarters of top speed, fuel consumption will be reduced by
one half. Never drive faster than the posted speed limit and weather
conditions permit. •
Reducing unnecessary idling
Even when your car is just idling it burns up fuel.
- Shut the engine off when you are not driving the vehicle.
-Do not warm up the vehicle by letting the eng ine run at
idle.
It makes sense to shut off the engine in traffic jams, when waiting
for trains to pass at rai lroad crossings, or at traffic lights that have
long waits on red. Turning the engine off for just 30-40 seconds
saves more fuel than is burned starting the engine again .
It takes a long time for the engine to warm up fully when it is
running at idle. However, wear and noxious emissions are especially
high when the engine is warming up. So you should drive away as
soon as you start the engine and avoid running at high rpms while
the engine is sti ll warm ing up .

Do not leave engine idling unattended after starting. If warning
lights should come on to indicate improper operation, they would
go unheeded . Extended id ling a lso produces heat, which could
resu lt in overheating or other damage to the vehicle or other
property .•
Regular maintenance
A badly tuned engine unnecessarily wastes a lot of fuel.
- Have your vehicle serviced at regular intervals.

Be sure the load in the trailer is held securely in place to prevent it
from shifting forward, backward or sideways.

Towing a trailer makes the engine work harder. It is important that
the cooling system 's performance is up to the additiona l load. Make
sure that the cooling system has enough flu id.
Ti re press ure
When towing a trailer, inflate the tires of your vehicle to the cold tire
pressure listed under "Full load" on the labe l located either on the
driver's side B-pillar (visible when the door is open} or inside the fuel
filler flap . Inflate trailer tires to trai ler and tire manufacturers' spec ­
ifications.
Ligh ts
The headlight settings should be checked with the trailer attached
before driving off . Check to make sure both vehicle and trailer lights
are working properly .
Safe ty c hain s
Be sure trailer safety chains are properly connected from the trailer
to the hitch on the vehicle. Leave enough slack in the chains to
permit turning corners. When you install safety chains, make sure
they will not drag on the road when you are driving.
The chains should cross under the trailer tongue to prevent it from dropping in case of separation from the hitch.

Driving with a trailer always requires extra care and
consideration.
To obtain the best possible handling of veh icle and trailer,
please note t he following :
Do not tow a loaded trailer when your car itself is not
loaded .
- Be especia lly careful when passing other vehicles .
Observe speed l imits .
Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Always apply brakes early.
Monitor the temperature gauge.
W eight distrib utio n
Towing a loaded trailer with an empty car results in a h ighly
unstable distribution of weight . If this cannot be avoided, drive at
very low speeds only to avoid the risk of losing steering control.
A "balanced" rig is easier to operate and control. This means that
t he tow vehicle should be loaded to the extent possible and permis ­
sible, while keeping the trailer as light as possib le under the circum ­
stances . Whenever possible, transfer some cargo to the luggage
compartment of the tow vehicle whi le observing tongue load
requirements and vehicle loading considerations.
S pee d
The higher the speed, the more difficu lt it becomes for the d river to
control the rig. Do not drive at the maximum permissible speed.
Reduce your speed even more if load, weather or wind conditions
are unfavorable -particularly when going downhill .
Reduce vehicle speed

Observe speed limits. In some areas, speeds for vehicles towing
trailers are lower than for regular vehicles.
Always apply brakes early. When driving downhill, shift into a lower gear to use the engine braking effect to slow the vehicle. Use of the
brakes a lone can cause them to overheat and fail.
Coolant temperature
The coolant temperature gauge=> page 8 must be observed care­
ful ly . If the needle moves close to the upper end of the scale, reduce
speed immediately and/or turn off the air conditioner .
If the coolant temperature warning light in the instrument cluster
starts flashing
-F- , pul l off the road, stop and let the engine idle for
about two minutes to prevent heat build-up .
& WARNING
Anyone not properly restrained in a moving vehicle is at a much
greater risk in an accident. Never let anyone ride in your car who
is not properly wearing the restraints provided by Audi . •
Trailer towing tips
Important to know
----------------
Your vehicle handles differently when towing a trailer because of
the additional weight and different weight distribution. Safety,
performance and economy will great ly depend on how careful ly you
load your trailer and operate your rig.
Before you actual ly tow your trailer, pract ice turning, stopping and
backing up in an area away from traffic. Keep practicing unti l you
have become completely familiar with the way your vehicle -trailer
combination behaves and responds . Backing
up is difficult and requires practice . Backing up with a
t rai ler genera lly requires steering action opposite to that when
backing up your vehicle without a trailer .
Maintain a greater distance between your vehicle and the one in
front of you. You will need more room to stop . To compensate for
the trai ler, you wi ll need a larger than norma l turning radius.
When passing, remember that you cannot accelerate as fast as you
normally would because of the added load. Make sure you have
enough room to pass. After passing, al low plenty of room for your
trai ler before changing lanes again .
Avoid jerky starts, sharp turns or rapid lane changes.

• Do not tow a trailer during the break -in period of your vehicle.

Parking on a s•ope
Do not pork on a slope with a trailer. If it cannot be
avoided, do so only ofter doing the following:
When parking:
Apply the foot brake.
- Have someone p lace chocks under both the vehicle and
the trailer wheels.
With chocks in place, slow ly release the brakes until the
wheel chocks absorb the load.
- Turn the wheels towards the curb.
- Apply the parking brake.

-Place an automatic transmission* in P, respectively a
manual transmission in first or reverse gear.
When restarting after parking :
- Apply the foot brake .
- Start the engine.
- Move t he selector lever to
D, respectively a manual trans-
mission in first gear.
- Release the parking brake and slowly pull out and away
from the wheel chocks.
- Stop and have someone retrieve the wheel chocks .
[ i ] Tips
If you move the selector lever of the automatic transmission * to P
before applying the parking b rake and before blocking the wheels,
you may have to use more force later to move the lever out of the P
position .•

Plastic and vinyl
Plastic needs special care.
Use a clean, damp cloth or sponge to remove dust and light surface
dirt. For other soil, use a lukewarm all -purpose cleaning solution or
a mild saddle soap for vinyl trim. Remove water spots and traces of
soap with a clean, damp cloth or sponge . Use a clean, soft cloth to
rub dry .
Grease, tar or oil stains can be removed with a clean cloth or sponge
soaked with all-purpose cleaner or with a solvent designed espe­
cially to clean vinyl.
Occasionally apply a colorless vinyl or leather preservative to retain
the material's luster and pliability.

Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots and deposits from
aluminum surfaces. Chrome care products and alkaline cleaners
will attack aluminum surfaces and can damage them over time.

Touch-up paint
Minor paint damages should be touched up immediately.
-Use either a touch -up paint stick or spray paint to cover
minor scratches and nicks.
Your authorized Audi dealer has touch-up paint for minor scratches
and stone chips. Scratches should be touched up soon after they
occur to prevent corrosion.
If a spot starts to rust, however, a simple touch-up job will not be
enough. The affected surface must be sanded smooth and coated
with an anti-rust primer before the painted finish can be restored.

Windows
Clear vision to all sides.
Clean all windows regularly to remove road film and car
wash wax buildup.
- Remove snow from windows using a brush.
- Use a plastic ice scraper to remove ice from windows and
mirrors.
- Remove other residue on the windows with a spray-on
glass cleaner.
- Wipe the windows dry with a clean piece of cloth or
kitchen paper towel.

The intensity of the color determines the visual characteristics and
appearance . If the surface of the leathe r has a typica l natura l loo k,
then the leather is a nappa leather that has been left in a re latively
natural condition . This leather offers particu lar ly good comfort and
breathes well. Fine veins , closed grains, insect bites, skin folds, and
subt le variations in color remain visible . These characte ristics
demonstrate that the material is natu ral.
Natura l nappa lea ther is not covered by a color finish. It is therefore
more sensitive to soi ling and wear, which is something you need to
consider if children, anima ls or other factors m ight prove to be
particula rly ha rd on the leather.
By contrast, leather types that are covered by a colored finish layer
are more durable. This has a positive effect on the leather's resis­
tance to wear and so iling in daily use. On the other hand, the typica l
characteristics of natural leather are barely or not apparent .
However, this does not mean that the leather itself is of inferior
quality.
C are and handling
Because of the exclusive nature of the types of leather that Audi
uses and the ir unique properties (such as sensitivity to oi ls, grease,
soiling, etc.I, you will need to be somewhat careful with these
lea thers, a nd a certain type o f care is requ ired . For example, dark
clothing materials can discolor leather seats (especial ly if such
cloth ing is damp and wa s not dyed correctly). Dust and dirt particles
in pores, folds, and seams can have an abrasive effect and can
damage the leather surface as we ll as weaken seams .
The leather shou ld be c leaned regularly as needed . Af ter having
been used for a relative ly long time, your leather seats will acquire
a rich a ged finish. This is a cha racteristic of natural leather and a
sign of true qua lity.
I n orde r to mai ntain the value of this natura l p roduct over the life of
your vehic le, you should fo llow the recommendations below :

• To keep your leather from bleaching out, do not allow it to be
exposed to bright sun light for long periods of time . If you have to
leave the vehicle parked outside for long periods, cover the lea ther
to protect it from direct exposure to sunlight.
• Sharp objects on c lothing, such as zippers, rivets or sharp p ieces
on belts can leave permanent scratches or sc rape marks on the
su rface of the leather.
[ i ] Tips
• After each t ime you clean the leather and a t regular i ntervals, use
a leather preservative cream that contains UV-blockers and that
wo rks int o the leathe r. This cream wil l n ou rish and moistur ize the
leather, helping it to breathe and stay supple . It a lso helps to build
up a protec tive coating on the surface .
• Clean the leather every 2 - 3 months, and c lean any areas that get
s o iled .
• Remove fresh marks made by bal lpoint pens, ink, lipstick, shoe
polish, etc . as soon as poss ible.
• P reserve the co lor of the leather as needed by using a special
colored leather ca re cream to touch up areas o f uneven colo r. •

Mor e stubborn dirt
- More stubborn dirt can be removed using a cloth satu ­
rated with a mild soap solution (2 tablespoons m ild
liquid soap) .
- Never allow the soap solut ion to saturate the leathe r, and
make certain that no water soaks into the seams.
- Wipe off the soap solu tion with a soft , dry clot h.
Cleaning spots
- Remove fresh water-ba sed spots (su ch as coffee, tea,
juices, b lo od) with an a bsorbent c loth or paper towel.
- Remove fresh
grease or oil-ba sed spots (such as butter,
mayonnaise, chocolate) with an absorbent cloth or paper
towel, or use the cleaner from the leather care kit if t he
s pot has not yet pene trate d in to the surface of the
l eather.
- Use an oil/g rease d issolv ing spray, if
oil /grease spots
have dried on.
- Remove specific kinds of spo ts (ballpoint pen, fe lt
marker, fingernai l po lish, water -based paint, shoe polish,
etc.) with a spot remover specifically formu lated for
leather.
Leather care
- Every hal f year us e an approve d leather car e product
(available from your authorized Audi deale r) to care for
the leather .
- App ly the pr odu ct very sparingly .
Wipe it off wit h a damp cloth.

- Dab at the stain. Start at the outside and work inwards.
- Once the stain is no longer v isible, use a soft dry cloth or
tissue to soak up the moisture.
Do not use lea ther cleaning produc ts on Alcantara®.
You may use a suitable shampoo for removing dust and dirt.
Dust and grit in the pores and seams can scratch and damage the
surface. If the car is left standing in the sun for long periods, the
Alcantara® should be protected against direct sunlight to prevent it
from fading. Slight color variations will develop in normal use and are not an indication of material deterioration.

• Never use chemical solvents (e.g. lighter fluid, turpentine),
waxes , shoe polish or similar products on Alcantara ® surfaces.
• To avoid damage, have stubborn stains removed by a commer ­
cial cleaning specialist.
• Do not use brushes, stiff sponges or similarly abrasive cleaning
aids. •
Safety belts
Only well-maintained safety belts work reliably when
needed.
- Keep belts clean.
- For cleaning, use a mild soap and water solution . Let
belts dry thoroughly and away from direct sunlight.
- Do not allow inertia reel safety belts to retract before
they are completely dry.
- Check the condition of your safety belts
regularly.
Heavily soiled safety belts may not retract properly .

Damaged safety belts can break in a crash.
• Anything that might damage your safety belts could mean that
you and your passengers would not be adequately protected in an
accident.
• Safety belt performance depends on correct installation. Never
remove belts from the vehicle to clean them .
• Do not use chemical cleaning agents, bleach or dyes. They have
corrosive properties which weaken the webbing.
• When cleaning your safety belts, inspect them for damage. If
you discover damage, see your authorized Audi dealer.

Engine compartment
Be especially careful when cleaning the engine comport­
ment.
Always switch off the ignition before cleaning the engine => &.
Plenum panel
Remove leaves from the plenum panel in front of the windshield
under the engine hood. This prevents the water drain holes from
becoming blocked, and it prevents debris from entering the vehicle
interior through the heating and ventilation ducts .
Corrosion protection
The engine compartment and transmission have been corrosion­
protected at the factory.
Good anti-corrosion treatment is very important, particularly in the
winter. If the vehicle is frequently driven on salt treated roads, the .,_
