The spare tire in your vehicle is called a "Tem-
porary Spare".
Recommended tire pressure (see the placard
on the B-pillar or on the fuel filler door) should
be maintained irrespective of which position on
the vehicle the temporary spare tire is used on.
In the event of damage to this tire, a new one
can be purchased from your Volvo retailer.
WARNING
Current legislation prohibits the use of the
"Temporary Spare" tire other than as a tem-
porary replacement for a punctured tire. It
must be replaced as soon as possible by a
standard tire. Road holding and handling
may be affected with the "Temporary
Spare" in use. Do not exceed 50 mph
(80 km/h).
CAUTION
The vehicle must not be driven with wheels
of different dimensions or with a spare tire
other than the one that came with the vehi-
cle. The use of different size wheels can
seriously damage your vehicle's transmis-
sion.

The tire pressure monitoring system uses sen-
sors mounted in the tire valves to check infla-
tion pressure levels. When the vehicle is
moving at a speed of approximately 20 mph
(30 km/h) or faster, these sensors transmit
inflation pressure data to a receiver located in

will light up the tire pressure warning light (also
referred to as a telltale) in the instrument panel,
and will display a message in the text window.
The wording of this message is determined by
the degree of inflation pressure loss.
NOTE
If a fault occurs in TPMS, the tire pressure
warning light will flash for approximately
1 minute and

will be displayed.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided),
should be checked monthly when cold and
inflated to the inflation pressure recommended
by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle
placard or tire inflation pressure label. (If your
vehicle has tires of a different size than the size
indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation
pressure label, you should determine the
proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has
been equipped with a tire pressure monitoring
system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pres-
sure telltale when one or more of your tires is
significantly under-inflated. Accordingly, when
the low tire pressure telltale illuminates, you
should stop and check your tires as soon as
possible, and inflate them to the proper pres-
sure. Driving on a significantly under-inflated
tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to
tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel
efficiency and tire tread life, and may affect the
vehicle's handling and stopping ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute
for proper tire maintenance, and it is the driv-er's responsibility to maintain correct tire pres-
sure, even if under-inflation has not reached
the level to trigger illumination of the TPMS low
tire pressure telltale.
Your vehicle has also been equipped with a
TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate when
the system is not operating properly. The
TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with
the low tire pressure telltale. When the system
detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for
approximately one minute and then remain
continuously illuminated. This sequence will
continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as
long as the malfunction exists. When the mal-
function indicator is illuminated, the system
may not be able to detect or signal low tire
pressure as intended. TPMS malfunctions may
occur for a variety of reasons, including the
installation of replacement or alternate tires or
wheels on the vehicle that prevent the TPMS
from functioning properly. Always check the
TPMS malfunction telltale after replacing one
or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to
ensure that the replacement or alternate tires
and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to
function properly.

When the vehicle is driven immediately after
being washed, apply the brakes several
times in order to remove any moisture from
the brake linings.
Engine cleaning agents should not be used
when the engine is warm. This constitutes a
fire risk.Automatic washing - simple and quick•
We do NOT recommend washing your
vehicle in an automatic wash during the
first six months (because the paint will not
have hardened sufficiently).
•
An automatic wash is a simple and quick
way to clean your vehicle, but it is worth
remembering that it may not be as thor-
ough as when you yourself go over the
vehicle with sponge and water. Keeping
the underbody clean is most important,
especially in the winter. Some automatic
washers do not have facilities for washing
the underbody.
•
Before driving into an automatic vehicle
wash, make sure that side view mirrors,auxiliary lamps, etc, are secure, and that
any antenna(s) are retracted or removed.
Otherwise there is risk of the machine dis-
lodging them.
Exterior lightingCondensation may form temporarily on the
inside of the lenses of exterior lights such as
headlights, fog lights, or tail lights. This is nor-
mal and the lights are designed to withstand
moisture. Normally, condensation will dissi-
pate after the lights have been on for a short
time.Polishing and waxing•
Normally, polishing is not required during
the first year after delivery, however, wax-
ing may be beneficial.
•
Before applying polish or wax the vehicle
must be washed and dried. Tar spots can
be removed with kerosene or tar remover.
Difficult spots may require a fine rubbing
compound.
•
After polishing use liquid or paste wax.
•
Several commercially available products
contain both polish and wax.
•
Waxing alone does not substitute for pol-
ishing a dull surface.
•
A wide range of polymer-based vehicle
waxes can be purchased today. Thesewaxes are easy to use and produce a long-
lasting, high-gloss finish that protects the
bodywork against oxidation, road dirt and
fading.
•
Do not polish or wax your vehicle in direct
sunlight (the surface of the vehicle should
not be warmer than 113 ° F (45 ° C).CAUTION
Volvo does not recommend the use of long-
life or durable paint protection coatings,
some of which may claim to prevent pitting,
fading, oxidation, etc. These coatings have
not been tested by Volvo for compatibility
with your vehicle's clear coat. Some of them
may cause the clear coat to soften, crack,
or cloud. Damage caused by application of
paint protection coatings may not be cov-
ered under your vehicle's paint warranty.Cleaning the upholsteryFabricClean with soapy water or a detergent. For
more difficult spots caused by oil, ice cream,
shoe polish, grease, etc., use a clothing/fabric

Cleaning floor matsThe floor mats should be vacuumed or brushed
clean regularly, especially during winter when
they should be taken out for drying. Spots on
textile mats can be removed with a mild deter-
gent.Bear in mind•
Take extra care when removing stains such
as ink or lipstick since the coloring can
spread.
•
Use solvents sparingly. Too much solvent
can damage the seat padding.
•
Start from the outside of the stain and work
toward the center.

NOTE
Volvo uses different systems to indicate a
low oil level or pressure. Some models have
an oil pressure sensor, in which case a
warning symbol (see page 52) is used to
indicate low oil pressure. Other models have
an oil level sensor, in which case the driver
is alerted by the warning symbol in the cen-
ter of the instrument panel and a text in the
information display. Some models use both
systems. Contact a trained and qualified
Volvo service technician for more informa-
tion.Changing engine oil and oil filterSee the information on oil specifications above
and page 240 for oil volumes. Refer to the
Warranty and Service Records Information
booklet for information on the oil change inter-
vals.
NOTE

Volvo does not recommend the use of
oil additives.

Synthetic oil is not used when the oil is
changed at the normal maintenance
intervals except at owner request and at
additional charge. Please consult a
trained and qualified Volvo service tech-
nician.
Checking and adding oilThe oil level should be checked every time the
vehicle is refueled. This is especially important
during the period up to the first scheduled
maintenance service.•
The vehicle should be parked on a level
surface when the oil is checked.
•
If the engine is warm, wait for at least
10-15 minutes after the engine has been
switched off before checking the oil.
Checking the oil

1. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it with a lint-
free rag.2. Reinsert the dipstick, pull it out, and check
the oil level.
3. Add oil if necessary. If the level is close to
theMINmark, add approximately
1 US quart (1 liter) of oil.
4. Run the engine until it reaches normal
operating temperature.
5. Switch off the engine and wait for at least
10-15 minutes and recheck the oil level. If
necessary, add oil until the level is near the
MAX mark.
CAUTION
•
Not checking the oil level regularly can
result in serious engine damage if the oil
level becomes too low.
•
Never fill oil above the MAX mark. This
could cause an increase in oil consump-
tion.
•

Storing stations

To store a selected station under one of the
station setting buttons 1-6:
1. Tune to the desired station.
2. Press the button under which the station is
to be stored and keep it depressed. The
audio system sound will be interrupted for
a few seconds and
STORED
will appear in
the display. The station is now stored.
A total of 30 stations can be stored; 6 stations
each in AM1, AM2, FM1, FM2, andFM3.
Storing stations automatically
This function automatically
searches for and stores up to
10 strong AM or FM stations in
a separate memory. If more
than ten stations are found, the
ten strongest ones are stored.
This function is especially useful in areas in
which you are not familiar with radio stations or
their frequencies.
To use the AUTO function:
1.
Select radio mode using the AM or FM
buttons, or by turning the SOURCE knob.
2.
Start the search by pressing AUTO for
more than 2 seconds.
3.
AUTO
appears in the display and a number
of stations with strong signals (max. 10)
from the selected frequency band will be
stored in the auto-store memory. If there
are no stations with sufficient signal
strength,
NO STATION
is displayed.
4.
Press the AUTO button or the arrow keys
on the optional steering wheel controls
briefly to select the stored stations.
When the radio is in auto-store mode,
AUTO
is
shown in the display.
AUTO
disappears when
you return to the normal radio mode.Return to the normal radio mode by pressing
theAM, FM, or EXIT button.
To return to the Auto-store mode, press the
AUTO button briefly.

Starting the CD changerThe HU-850 is equipped with an internal, 6-
disc CD changer.
Please refer to the illustration on page 218 for
the location of the buttons referred to on this
page.To load discs into the changer:1.
Press the CD button or turn the SOURCE
knob to CD.
2. Select an empty position by pressing one
of the preset buttons. The display shows
which positions are empty.
LOAD DISC
must be displayed before a disc is inserted
into the player.
3. Insert a disc.
If there are discs in the player when CD mode
is selected, the changer will resume playing the
disc and track that were most recently played.

disc. After that, the disc automatically rein-
serts into the player, and the CD player will
resume playing the most recently selected
track.
