Continue depressing the brake pedal until the engine is com -
pletely started.

Manual transmission
Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in N. Firmly depress the brake pedal and clutch pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the START position and start the engine.

Continue depressing the brake pedal and clutch pedal until the
engine is completely st
arted.
Shift the shift lever to P (auto-
matic transmission) or N (man-

When starting the engine, the engine
switch may seem stuck in the LOCK posi-
tion. To free it, turn the key while turning
the steering wheel slightly in either direc-
tion.

Key reminder function
A buzzer sounds if the driver’s door is opened, while the engine switch is in
the ACC or LOCK position to remind you to remove the key.
CAUTION
nWhen starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver's seat. Do not depress the
accelerator while starting the engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
n Caution while driving
Do not turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
If in an emergency, you must turn the engine off while the vehicle is moving,
turn the key only to the ACC position.
NOTICE
nTo prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the key in the ACC or ON position for long periods if the engine
is not running.
n When starting the engine
lDo not crank for more than 30 seconds at a time. This may overheat the
starter and wiring systems.
l Do not race a cold engine.
l If the engine becomes difficult to start or stalls frequently, have the engine
checked immediately.

lDo not let the indicator needle of the tachometer enter the red zone, which
indicates the maximum engine speed.
l The engine may be overheating if the high engine coolant temperature
warning light comes on. In this case, immediately stop the vehicle in a safe
place, and check the engine after it has cooled completely. (

nIf a safety system warning light does not come on
Should a safety system light such as ABS and the SRS airbag warning light
not come on when you start the engine, this could mean that these systems
are not available to help protect you in an accident, which could result in
death or serious injury. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately if this occurs.
n Warning lights
Warning lights inform the driver of malfunctions in any of the
vehicle’s systems. ( →P. 3 0 7 )
*: These lights turn on when the engine switch is turned to the ON
position to indicate that a system check is being performed. They will
turn off after the engine is started, or after a few seconds. There may
be a malfunction in a system if a light does not come on, or if the
lights do not turn off. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer.

Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving
the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri
-
ate to the prevailing weather conditions.
n Pre-winter preparations

fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside tem -
peratures.
• Engine oil
• Engine coolant
• Washer fluid
l Have a se
rvice technician inspect the level and specific grav -
ity of battery electrolyte.
l Have the veh
icle fitted with four snow tires or purchase a set
of tire chains for the front tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same size and brand, and that chains
match the size of the tires.
n Before driving the vehicle
Perform the following according to the driving conditions.
lDo
not try to forcibly open a window, scrape an outside rear
view mirror surface or move a wiper or outside rear view mir -
ror that is frozen. Pour warm water over the frozen area to
me
lt the ice. Wipe away the water immediately to prevent it
from freezing.
l T
o ensure proper operation of th e climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents
in front of the windshield.
l Remove a
ny ice that has accumu lated on the vehicle chassis.
l Pe
riodically check for and remove any excess ice or snow
that may have accumulated in the wheel well or on the
brakes.
