The version of the instrument cluster can differ depending on the equipment.
Engine revolutions counterThe start of the red zone in the revolutions counter ⇒fig. 18 indicates the
maximum permissible engine speed for all gears for an engine which has been run
in and operating at a normal temperature. Shift into the next higher gear or change
into the selector lever position D of the automatic gearbox before reaching this
zone.
One should shift to a lower gear at the latest when the engine is no longer running
“smoothly”.

Digital clockA reset button is installed on the left below beside the speedometer for
adjusting the clock ⇒page 15, fig. 18.
Set hours
– Turn the reset button to the left.
Setting minutes
– Turn the reset button to the right.
WARNING
The clock should not be adjusted while driving for safety reasons but only
when the vehicle is stationary.Multi-functional indicator (onboard computer)*IntroductionThe multi-functional indicator appears in the display ⇒fig. 21 or in the information
display ⇒page 22, fig. 24 depending on the equipment fitted to your vehicle.
The multi-functional indicator offers you a range of useful information.
Note
In certain national versions the displays appear in the Imperial system of
measures.MemoryThe multi-functional indicator is equipped with two automatic memories. The
selected memory is displayed in the middle of the display field ⇒fig. 21.
The data of the single-trip memory (memory 1) is shown if a 1 appears in the
display. A 2 shown in the display means that data relates to the total distance
memory (memory 2).
Switching of the memory takes place when the button ⇒page 20, fig. 22.
Single-trip memory (memory 1)
The single-trip memory collates the driving information from the moment the igni-
tion is switched on until it is switched off. New data will also flow into the calcula-
tion of the current driving information if the trip is continued within 2 hours after
switching off the ignition. The memory will be is automatically erased, on the other
hand, if the trip is interrupted for more than 2 hours.

Starting-off and DrivingSetting steering wheel position*You can set the height and the forward/back position of the steering
wheel to the desired position.
– Adjust the driver seat ⇒page 62.
– Pull the lever below the steering column ⇒fig. 122 down ⇒.
– Set the steering wheel to the desired position (concerning height and
forward/back position).– Then push the lever up against the steering column until it locks into
place.
WARNING
•
You must not adjust the steering wheel when the vehicle is moving!
•
The driver must maintain a distance of at least 25 cm to the steering
wheel ⇒fig. 123. Not maintaining this minimum distance will mean that the
airbag system will not be able to properly protect you - hazard!
•

steering wheel altering its position unintentionally when driving - risk of
accident!
•
If you adjust the steering wheel further towards the head, you will reduce
the protection offered by the driver airbag in the event of an accident. Check
that the steering wheel is aligned to the chest.
•
When driving, hold the steering wheel with both hands firmly on the
outer edge in the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position. Never hold the steering
wheel firmly in the 12 o'clock position or in another way (e.g. in the middle
of the steering wheel or at the inner steering wheel edge). In such cases,
injuries to the arms, the hands and the head can occur when the driver
airbag is deployed.

Technical Data For your own safety and to reduce the risk of injury in the event of an accident, we
recommend the following setting.
•
Adjust the steering wheel so that the distance between the steering wheel and
your chest is at least 25 cm ⇒page 128, fig. 140.
•
Position the driver seat in the forward/back direction so that you are able to fully
press the pedals with your legs at a slight angle.
•
Adjust the seat backrest so that you are able to reach the highest point of the
steering wheel with your arms at a slight angle.
•
Adjust the head restraint so that the top edge of the head restraint is at the same
level as the upper part of your head ⇒fig. 141.
•
Fasten the seat belt correctly ⇒page 134, “How are seat belts correctly
fastened?”.
Driver seat adjustment ⇒page 62, “Adjusting the front seats”.
WARNING
•
The front seats and the head restraints must always be adjusted to match
the body size of the seat occupant as well as the seat belts must always be
correctly fastened in order to provide an optimal protection for you and your
occupants.
•
The driver must maintain a distance of at least 25 cm to the steering
wheel ⇒page 128, fig. 140. Not maintaining this minimum distance will mean that the airbag system will not be able to properly protect you -
hazard!
•
When driving, hold the steering wheel with both hands firmly on the
outer edge in the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock position. Never hold the steering
wheel firmly in the 12 o'clock position or in another way (e.g. in the middle
of the steering wheel or at the inner steering wheel edge). In such cases,
injuries to the arms, the hands and the head can occur when the driver

•
Ensure that there are no objects in the footwell as any objects may get
behind the pedals during a driving or braking manoeuvre. You would then
no longer be able to operate the clutch, to brake or accelerate.
Correct seated position for the front passenger
The front passenger must maintain a distance of at least 25 cm from
the dash panel so that the airbag offers the greatest possible safety
when an airbag is deployed.For the safety of the front passenger and to reduce the risk of injury in the event of
an accident, we recommend the following setting.•
Adjust the front passenger seat as far as possible to the rear.
•
Adjust the head restraint so that the top edge of the head restraint is at the same
level as the upper part of your head ⇒fig. 141.
•
Fasten the seat belt correctly ⇒page 134, “How are seat belts correctly
fastened?”.
In exceptional cases the front passenger airbag can be deactivated ⇒page 145,
“Deactivating airbags”.
Adjusting the passenger seat ⇒page 62, “Adjusting the front seats”.

Fuel 182Operation in winterWinter-grade diesel fuel
A different grade of diesel fuel is available at filling stations in winter than during the
summer. Using “summer-grade diesel fuel” at temperatures below 0°C can result in
operational problems because the diesel becomes viscous as a result of paraffin
separation.
It is therefore the case that EN 590 prescribes diesel fuel class for certain periods of
the year which can also be purchased at the corresponding time during the year.
“Winter-grade diesel fuel” will still operate properly even at a temperature of -20°C.
It is often the case in countries with different climatic conditions that diesel fuels
available have a different temperature characteristic. The specialist garages and the
filling stations in the country concerned will be able to provide you with informa-
tion regarding the diesel fuels available.
Prewarming fuel
The vehicle is fitted with a fuel filter prewarming system. This secures operation of
a vehicle using diesel fuel down to an environmental temperature of -25°C.
Caution
It is not permitted to add the various fuel additives on the market, including petrol,
to diesel fuel in order to improve its flow properties.
RefuellingOpen fuel filler flap
– Open the fuel filler flap with the hand ⇒fig. 177.
– Unlock the fuel filler cap on the fuel filler tube to the left using the
vehicle key.
– Unscrew the fuel filler cap anti-clockwise and place the fuel filler cap
from above on the fuel filler flap ⇒fig. 178.
Closing fuel filler cap
– Screw on the cap by turning it to the right until it is heard to lock.
