Parking on Hills
{CAUTION
Parking the vehicle on a hill with
the trailer attached can be
dangerous. If something goes
wrong, the rig could start to move.
People can be injured, and both
the vehicle and the trailer can be
damaged. When possible, always
park the rig on a at surface.
If parking the rig on a hill:
1. Press the brake pedal, but do
not shift into P (Park) yet.
Turn the wheels into the curb if
facing downhill or into traffic
if facing uphill.
2. Have someone place chocks
under the trailer wheels.3. When the wheel chocks are in
place, release the regular
brakes until the chocks absorb
the load.
4. Reapply the brake pedal. Then
apply the parking brake and
shift into P (Park).
5. Release the brake pedal.
Leaving After Parking on
a Hill
1. Apply and hold the brake pedal
while you:
Start the engine
Shift into a gear
Release the parking brake
2. Let up on the brake pedal.
3. Drive slowly until the trailer is
clear of the chocks.
4. Stop and have someone pick up
and store the chocks.
Maintenance When Trailer
Towing
The vehicle needs service more
often when pulling a trailer.

Things that are especially important
in trailer operation are automatic
transmission uid, engine oil,
axle lubricant, belts, cooling system
and brake system. It is a good
idea to inspect these before and
during the trip.
Check periodically to see that all
hitch nuts and bolts are tight.

Engine Oil
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the
engine oil level at each fuel ll. In
order to get an accurate reading, the
oil must be warm and the vehicle
must be on level ground.The engine oil dipstick handle is a
yellow loop. SeeEngine
Compartment Overview on
page 5-10for the location of the
engine oil dipstick.
1. Turn off the engine and give the
oil several minutes to drain back
into the oil pan. If this is not
done, the oil dipstick might not
show the actual level.
2. Pull the dipstick and clean it with
a paper towel or cloth, then push
it back in all the way. Remove
it again, keeping the tip down and
check the level.

Engine Overheating
There is a coolant temperature
warning light on your vehicle’s
instrument panel. SeeEngine
Coolant Temperature Warning Light
on page 3-29.
If Steam Is Coming From Your
Engine
{CAUTION
Steam from an overheated engine
can burn you badly, even if you
just open the hood. Stay away
from the engine if you see or hear
steam coming from it. Just turn it
off and get everyone away from
the vehicle until it cools down.
Wait until there is no sign of
steam or coolant before you
open the hood.

If you keep driving when your
engine is overheated, the liquids
in it can catch re. You or others
could be badly burned. Stop your
engine if it overheats, and get
out of the vehicle until the engine
is cool.
Notice:If the engine catches re
because of being driven with
no coolant, your vehicle can be
badly damaged. The costly
repairs would not be covered by
the vehicle warranty.
If No Steam Is Coming From
Your Engine
If you get an engine overheat
warning, but see or hear no steam,
the problem may not be too serious.
Sometimes the engine can get a little
too hot when you:
Climb a long hill on a hot day.
Stop after high-speed driving.
Idle for long periods in traffic.
Tow a trailer.
If you get the overheat warning with
no sign of steam, try this for a
minute or so:
1. If you have an air conditioner
and it is on, turn it off.
2. Turn on your heater to full hot at
the highest fan speed and open
the windows as necessary.
3. Try to minimize engine load.
If you are in a traffic jam,
shift to N (Neutral); otherwise,
shift to the highest gear possible
while driving.

Bulb Replacement

not listed in this section, contact
your dealer/retailer.
Halogen Bulbs
{CAUTION
Halogen bulbs have pressurized
gas inside and can burst if you
drop or scratch the bulb. You or
others could be injured. Be sure
to read and follow the instructions
on the bulb package.
Headlamps
To replace one of the headlamp
bulbs, use the following procedure.
To replace the parking/turn signal
lamp bulb, seeFront Turn Signal
and Parking Lamps on page 5-36.
1. Open the hood. SeeHood
Release on page 5-9for
more information.
2. Remove the two screws from the
top of the front fascia and grille.
They are inboard of the
headlamp assembly.
3. Remove the three screws
retaining the headlamp assembly.
4. Insert a at blade tool through the
opening in the top. Make sure the
tool ts through the opening in the
headlamp bracket lower arm.
5. Push the locking tab toward
the rear of the vehicle with the
tool to lift the headlamp bracket
lower arm.6. Pull back on the front fascia and
then pull the headlamp assembly
out from the vehicle. Another
person might be needed to assist
with this step.
7. Disconnect the electrical
connector from the bulb
assembly.
8. Turn the bulb assembly
counterclockwise to remove it
from the housing.
9. Replace the old bulb with a
new one.
10. Reverse Steps 1 through 8 to
reinstall.

Tire Inspection and
Rotation
We recommend that you
regularly inspect the vehicle’s
tires, including the spare tire, for
signs of wear or damage.

Tires should be rotated every
5,000 to 8,000 miles (8 000 to
13 000 km). SeeScheduled
Maintenance on page 6-3.
The purpose of a regular tire
rotation is to achieve a uniform
wear for all tires on the
vehicle. This will ensure that the
vehicle continues to perform
most like it did when the
tires were new.
Any time you notice unusual
wear, rotate the tires as soon
as possible and check wheel
alignment. Also check for

When rotating the vehicle’s tires,
always use the correct rotation
pattern shown here.
After the tires have been rotated,

nuts are properly tightened. See

Rust or dirt on a wheel, or on
the parts to which it is
fastened, can make wheel
nuts become loose after a
time. The wheel could come
off and cause a crash. When
you change a wheel, remove
any rust or dirt from places
where the wheel attaches to
the vehicle. In an emergency,
you can use a cloth or a paper
towel to do this; but be sure to
use a scraper or wire brush
later, if you need to, to get all
the rust or dirt off.

Your dealer/retailer will know the
kind of wheel you need.
Each new wheel should have the
same load-carrying capacity,
diameter, width, offset and be
mounted the same way as the
one it replaces.
{CAUTION
Using the wrong replacement
wheels, wheel bolts, or wheel nuts
on your vehicle can be
dangerous. It could affect the
braking and handling of your
vehicle, make your tires lose air
and make you lose control. You
could have a collision in which
you or others could be injured.
Always use the correct wheel,
wheel bolts, and wheel nuts for
replacement.If you need to replace any of your
wheels, wheel bolts, or wheel
nuts, replace them only with new
Saturn original equipment parts.
This way, you will be sure to have
the right wheel, wheel bolts,
and wheel nuts for your vehicle.
Notice:The wrong wheel
can also cause problems with
bearing life, brake cooling,
speedometer or odometer
calibration, headlamp aim,
bumper height, vehicle ground
clearance, and tire clearance
to the body and chassis.

If a Tire Goes Flat
This vehicle has a tire sealant and
compressor kit. SeeTire Sealant
and Compressor Kit on page 5-59.
There is no spare tire, no tire
changing equipment, and no place
to store a tire.
It is unusual for a tire to blow out
while you are driving, especially
if you maintain your tires properly.
SeeTires on page 5-38.Ifair
goes out of a tire, it is much more
likely to leak out slowly. But, if
you should ever have a blow out,
here are a few tips about what
to expect and what to do:
If a front tire fails, the at tire will
create a drag that pulls the vehicle
toward that side. Take your foot
off the accelerator pedal and grip the
steering wheel rmly. Steer to
maintain lane position, and then
gently brake to a stop well out of the
traffic lane.A rear blow out, particularly on a
curve, acts much like a skid
and may require the same correction
you would use in a skid. In any
rear blow out, remove your foot from
the accelerator pedal. Get the
vehicle under control by steering the
way you want the vehicle to go. It
may be very bumpy and noisy,
but you can still steer. Gently brake
to a stop, well off the road if
possible.
If a tire goes at, avoid further tire
and wheel damage by driving slowly
to a level place and stopping.
1. Turn on the hazard warning

2. Park the vehicle. Set the parking
brake rmly and put the shift
lever in P (Park). SeeShifting
Into Park on page 2-23.3. Turn off the engine.
4. Inspect the at tire.
If the tire has been separated from
the wheel, has damaged sidewalls,
or has a puncture larger than a
1 4inch (6 mm), the tire is too
severely damaged for the tire
sealant and compressor kit to be
effective. SeeRoadside Assistance
Program on page 7-5.
If the tire has a puncture less than a
1 4inch (6 mm) in the tread area
of the tire, seeTire Sealant
and Compressor Kit on page 5-59.

12. Press the on/off button (D) to
turn the tire sealant and
compressor kit off.
Be careful while handling the tire
sealant and compressor kit as it
could be warm after usage.
13. Unplug the power plug (C) from
the accessory power outlet in
the vehicle.
14. Disconnect the air only hose (F)
from the tire valve stem, by
turning it counterclockwise, and
replace the tire valve stem cap.
15. Replace the air only hose (F)
and the power plug (C) back in
its original location.
16. Place the equipment in the
original storage location in
the vehicle.Removal and Installation of
the Sealant Canister
To remove the sealant canister:
1. Unlock the air only hose (F) from
the sealant canister (B) by
pulling up on the lever.
2. Pull the air only hose (F) from
the sealant canister (B).
3. Unwrap the sealant/air hose (F)
from the compressor (A).
4. Turn the sealant canister (B) so
the in ator lling hose is aligned
with the slot in the compressor.5. Lift the sealant canister (B) from
the compressor and replace with
a new sealant canister. See
your dealer/retailer for more
information.
To install a new sealant canister:
1. Align the sealant/air hose (F) with
the slot in the air compressor.
2. Push the sealant canister (B)
down and turn it clockwise.
3. Wrap the sealant/air hose (F)
around the air compressor
channel to stow it in its original
location.
4. Push the air compressor in ator
hose (F) onto the sealant
canister inlet and push the
lever down.
