tion. The indicator light
C in the instrument cluster also illumi ­
nates . The engine speed is limited to the speed displayed in the
driver information system. Keep in mind that the engine speed will
not exceed the va lue displayed in the driver information system, for
example when downshifting.
P lease go to an authorized Audi dealer or other qua lified workshop
to have the ma lfunction repaired .•

When this symbol '" illuminates, it means that Adaptive Light is
defective. Go to an authorized dealership to have the head lights or

tion in the e lectronic ignition lock. An additional driver
message can be displayed by press ing the [ CHECK ] button:

Speed warning system
Overview
The speed warning system helps you to keep your driving
speed below a set speed limit.
The speed warning system warns the driver if he exceeds a previ ­
ous ly stored maximum speed. A warning tone will sound as soon as
the vehicle speed exceeds th e set speed by about 3 mph (3 km/h). At
the same t ime, a warning symbol appears in the display .
The speed warning system has
t w o wa rnin g thr eshol ds that func­
tion independent ly of each other and that have somewhat different
purposes:
S peed warnin g 1
You can use speed warning 1 to set the maximum speed while you
are driving. This setting will remain in effect until you turn off the
ignition , assuming that you have not changed or reset the se tting .
The speed warning symbol
0 (USA models) /0 (Canada models) in
the warning 1 display appears when you exceed the maximum speed . It goes out when the speed falls below the stored maximum
speed .
The speed warning symbol wi ll also go out if the speed
e xce eds the
stored maximum speed by more than about 25 mph
(40 km/h) for at
leas t 1 O seconds. The stored maximum speed is deleted .

Light Sensor Malfunction
In the e vent of a lig ht sensor m alfu n ction, th e drive r is noti fie d in the
instrument cluster display:

AUTO . However, you can continue to tur n the lights on
and off u sing the ligh t switc h. Have the light sen sor checked as s oon
as possib le at a dealership.
& WARNING
• Never use daytime running lights to see where you are going.
They are not bright enough and will not let you see far enough ahead for safety , espe cially at dusk or when it is dark. Always
switch on the low beams at dusk or when it is dark .
• Automatic headlights are only intended to assist the driver .
They do not relieve the driver of his responsibility to check the headlights and to turn them on manually according to the current
light and visibility conditions. For example , fog and rain cannot be
detected by the light sensors . So always switch on the headlights
under these weather conditions and when driving in the dark
tD .
• Crashes can happen when you cannot see the road ahead and
when you cannot be seen by other motorists.
-Always turn on the headlights so that you can see ahead and
so that others can see your car from the back.

he light sensor for head light control is located in the rear view

l ights are still on, a buzzer will sound as long as the driver's door is
open to re mind you t o turn off the li g ht s.
• Al ways observe the specific local regulations for your area as to
w he n to u se yo ur ligh ts .•

Coming home
The Coming home function ensures that after turning off the igni­
tion and opening the driver's door
t h e v ehicle per ip he ry is ill um i­
nated in the dark. In addition, the front fog lights, the tail lights and
th e lic ense p la te li g ht are tur ned o n. O n-tim e ca n be set for a pe riod
from
O (off) to 60 seconds. .,,_

Rear window blind -settings
The MM/ allows you to have the rear window blind auto­
matically retracted when the reverse gear is engaged.
- Press the (CAR ) function button.
- Select

The windshield wiper lever controls both the windshield
wipers and the washer system.

Turning off the wipers

Gen era l inform ati on
The windshield wipers and the windshield washer system operate
only with the ignition on.
During a temporary stop, e.g. at a traffic signa l, the set wipe speed
is aut omatically reduced by one stage .
The windshield washer nozzles are heated at low temperatures
when the ignition is on .
Removing vv ater drop let s
About 5 seconds after the wash cycle is complete, the wiper system
performs a single automatic wipe cycle to remove any water drop ­
lets that remain on the windshield .
If you would like to deactivate this delayed wipe cyc le whi le dr iving,
you have to pull the lever to position © again within 10 seconds
af ter this w ipe cyc le .
Water droplet removal is reactivated after the ignition is switched off and then on again .
Rain se nsor
The ra in sensor operates on ly in the interval wiper position . When it
starts to rain, the interval wiper mode is activated automatically .
I f the windshie ld wiper lever is in the interval wipe position with the
ign ition sw itched off, the rain sensor is not activated unt il veh ic le
speed is above 4 mph (6 km/h) .
T o reduce the sens itivi ty of the rain sensor, the swi tch
© must be
moved down. To increase the sensitivity of the rain sensor, the
sw itc h must be moved up .
T he higher the sensitivity sett ing, the sooner the windshield wipers
react to moisture on the windshie ld. Increased sensitivity is
signa led by the windshie ld w ipers making a si ng le pass over the
windshield.
T he rain sensor wiper interva ls depend on the sens itivity setting as
we ll as vehicle speed. During brief stops, wiper motion will adjust in
r elation to the amount of rain on the windshield .
& WARNING
• Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only when they are in
good cond ition are they able to clear the windo ws properly to
provide uncompromised visibility . Worn or d am aged wiper blades

• The rain sensor is only designed to a ssist and support the
dri ver . It remai ns entirel y the dr iver's respon sibil ity to monitor
out side weather conditions and to manually activate the wiper s as
so on a s rain or dri zzle reduce s vis ibility through the wind sh ield.
• The wind shield must not be treated with water -repellent mate ­
rials . The y can incre as e g la re under poor visibility condition s su ch
as wetness , darkne ss, or when th e sun is low on t he horizon. In
addition , they can cause the wind shield wiper s to ch att er.

In freezing or near freezing conditions :

• Always check that the wiper blades are not fro zen to the glass
before you turn the wipers on. Loosen a wiper blade which is frozen
in place before operating the wipers to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wipers to clea r a frosted window . Using the
wipers as a convenient ice scraper will destroy the wiper blades.
• Before you take your v ehicl e to an automatic car wash, make sure
you have the windshield wiper system switched off (lever in position
Ol, otherwise the windshield wiper sys tem could get damaged in the
car wash if it should suddenly come on.
[ i] Tips
• The rain sensor is part of the interval wiping system . Turning off
the ignition will also deactivate the rain sensor . To reactivate the
sensor, switch off the interval wiping function, then switch it back
on again.
• Worn or dirty windshield wiper blades cause smearing which
can affect the operation of the rain sensor. Check the condition of
your windshield wiper blades regularly.
• Make sure the washer fluid reservoir in the engine compartment
is topped off before going on a long trip. Look up~
page 316for
checking and filling the washer container .•

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights.
- Operate the windshield wiper/washer system~ page 71,
fig. 65 ® with the headlights turned on by holding the
lever for longer than one second.
The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front headlights with water.
Controls and equip ­
ment
Clear vision
You should inspect the headlights regularly (for example when refu­
eling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses.
To ensure the system works properly in winter , keep the washer jets
free of snow and
remove any ice using a de -icing spray .•
Service position
The wiper blades can only be changed in the service posi­
tion.

Windshield wipers
At below freezing outside temperatures, make sure first
that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield.
- Press the [CAR] function button.
- Select Windshield wipers . The Windshield wipers menu
appears ~ fig. 66.
- Select Service position on to turn the service position on
or
off to return the windshield w iper to its orig inal posi­
tion .
You must only attempt to change the wiper blades when the s ervice
position is activated. This way, when you are working on the wind ­
shield wipers , you can
avoid damaging the paint on the engine
hood.

Clear vision

Never drive your vehicle when the windshield wiper arms are in the
service position and pulled away from the windshield. When you
drive faster than 4 mph (6 km/h), the wiper arms automatically
return back to the park position and could cause paint damage to
the engine hood!
[ i ] Tips
• You can also turn on the service position, for example, if you
want to protect the windshield from icing, using a cover.
• The service position moves to
off automatically when you
operate the windshield wiper lever, or speed exceeds 4 mph (6
km/h). •

- Bring the windshield wipers to the service position

-Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield.
- Press on both sides of the locking spring @ on the wiper
blade~ fig. 67. Hold the wiper blade firmly.
- Remove the wiper blade@.
Installing wiper blade
-Install the new wiper blade in the retainer on the wiper
arm @~fig . 68 until it clicks into place on the wiper
arm.
- Place the wiper arm back against the windshield.
Clean your wiper blades regularly with a windshield washer solution
to prevent streaking. If the blades are very dirty, for example with
insects, carefully clean the blades with a sponge or a soft brush.
If the wiper blades begin to streak the windshield, this cou ld be
caused by residue left on the windshield by automatic car washes.
Fill the windshield washer container with a special solution avail -
able at your authorized Audi dealer to remove the residue. _,,.

To prevent damage to the wiper system:
• Always loosen blades which are frozen to the windshield before
operating wipers.
• Do not use gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner , or other solvents on
or near the wiper blades.
• Do not attempt to move the wipers by hand .
• The windshield wiper blades mus t only be replaced when in the
service position =>
page 73! Otherwise, you risk damaging the paint
on the hood or the windshield wiper motor.

Automati c dimming fun ction
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indica te auto dimming
is active .
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror w ill darken
automa ti­
cally in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearwa rd approaching vehicles). Even in d imm ing
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when:
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .

I Not ready: The yellow indicator light shows that the system is
turned on but unable to send a warn ing. This can be due to the
following:
• There are no boundary lines, or there is on ly one boundary line
present .
• The boundary lines are not detected (e.g. due to snow, dirt, wet
conditions or light shining into the camera lens).
• More than two boundary lines (such as at construction sites) are
located in the vehicle's lane.
• The vehicle's speed is below the speed needed to activate it,
which is about 40 mph (65 km/h).
• The lane is narrower than about 8 ft . (2.5 ml, or wider than about
16 ft. (5 ml.
• The curve is too sharp.
Notes on the instrument cluster display
When the lane assist turns off automatically, the instrument cluster
indicator goes out and one of the following messages appears on
the display:
Audi lane assist not available: Currently no sensor vision
This message appears when the camera can no longer function
because it cannot detect the boundary lines. This may be due to the
following :
• The exterior s ide of the camera viewing window=>
page 143,
fig. 144 is covered with dirt or ice. Clean this part of the windshield.
• The camera v iewing window is fogged up on the inside. In this
case, wait until the fog disappears before turning lane assist on
again.
• The system was unable to detect boundary lines over an
extended period of time due to road conditions (such as snow­
covered lanes). Do not turn lane assist on again until the lines can
be more easily detected.
Audi lane assist not available
A temporary malfunction is preventing lane assist from operating .
Try turning on lane assist again a t a later time.
Audi lane assist: system fault
The system should be checked by an authorized Audi dealer or other
qualified workshop .

• Make sure that the camera viewing window=> page 143, fig. 144
is not covered by stickers or similar objects .
• Always keep the camera viewing window clean. This can usually
be done by operating the windshield wipers. •
