• In the AUTO mode, the low beams are turned off when the igni­
tion is turned off. The remaining l ights are turned off when the key
is taken out of the igni tion lock.
• Do not attach stickers to the windshie ld in front of the sensors as
this can disable the automatic head- and tail light control and the
automatic glare -dimming of the rearview mirror(s) .
• Always observe the specific local regulations for your area when
to use your lights .
• In the event of a light sensor malfunction , the driver information
display will show the symbol . If a ligh t sensor malfunction is indi ­
cated, you must use the light switch to turn the low beams on and
off. •

Daytime running lights (DRL)
The daytime running lights are turned on autom atically
when the ignition is switched on .

The day time running lights ca n be turned on or off using this func­
tion. If the function is active, the daytime running lights are turned
o n aut omatically when the ignition is switched on.

Never u se dayt ime running light s to see where you are goin g. They
are not bright enough and will not let you see far e nough ahead for

Rear reading light
Press the switch ~ to turn on and off the reading light. •
Luggage compartment light
A dome light in the rear roof liner illuminates the luggage
compartment. An additional light is provided on the
inside of the rear lid.
The light is located on the left side of the trunk.
With the switch at the center position, the rear dome light is auto­
matically switched on as soon as the rear lid is opened. The rear
dome light goes out 30 seconds after the rear lid is closed.
If the rear lid is left open for more than 10 minutes, both the rear
dome light and the light in rear lid are switched off to conserve the
battery charge. •

Sun visors
Using the sun visors makes driving safer.

The sun visors for the driver and front passenger can be removed
from their center mountings and moved toward the door windows
G) ~ fig. 60 to protect against side glare.
The vanity mirror in the sun visors is covered by a lid. When you
slide the lid@ open the mirror illumination comes on automati­
cally. When you slide the lid shut or fold the sun visor back up, the
illumination also goes out.
There is a folding visor between the visors for the driver and the
passenger which can be used to cover the space above the rear view
mirror. •

Sun blind
Use the sun shades to cut glare through the rear
passenger windows and the rear window.

- Move the small lever (located on the bottom edge of the
mirror) to the front.
Anti-glare setting - Move the small lever (located on the bottom edge of the
mirror) to the rear. •

Automatically dimming inside mirror
The automatic dimming function can be turned on and off
if required.

Automatic dimming function
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on. The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active.
When dimming is activated, the inside mirror will darken
automati­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearward approaching vehicles). Even in dimming
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when:
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .
& WARNING
Broken glass of automatic dimming mirror can cause electrolyte
fluid leakage . Electrolyte fluid can irritate skin, eyes, and respira­
tory system.
• Repeated or prolonged exposure to electrolyte can cause irrita­
tion to the respiratory system, especially among people with
asthma or other respiratory conditions . Get fresh air immediately
by leaving the vehicle or, if that is not possible, open windows and
doors all the way.
• If electrolyte gets into the eyes, flush them thoroughly with
large amounts of clean water for at least 15 minutes; medical
attention is recommended.
• If electrolyte contacts skin, flush affected area with clean water
for at least 15 minutes and then wash affected area with soap and ._

affected clothing and shoe s before reuse .

Liquid electro lyte leaked fro m a broken mirror glass will damage any
plastic surfaces it comes in contact with . C lean up spilled electrolyte

• If you switch off the automatic dimming function on th e ins ide
mirror , automati c dimming of the out side mirror s will lik ewi se be
di sabled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preventing light from
reaching the inside mirror.
• Do not attach any stickers to the windshield in front of the light
sensor, as this wou ld inter fere with the au tomatic opera tion of the
headlights and the automatic dimming of the inside mirror.
• Be aware that automatic d imming of the inside mirror can only
operate properly if the rear window sun b lind * is retracted .•

outside mirror) to @ (front passenger's outside m irror) .
Press the kno b in the appropr iate direction to move the
m irror surface so that you have a good view to the rear .
Heated mirrors*

surfaces are heated unt il the ignition is switched off -even if the

You are well -advised to fold* the outside mirrors in when maneu­
vering in tight spaces o r when leaving the ca r parked c lose to other
vehic les.

• Curved mirror surfaces (convex or spherica l*) increase your fie ld

Activating or deactivating the compass
The direction is displayed on the interior rear view mirror.

To activate or deactivate, hold the @ button down until
the red display appears or d isappears.
The digital compass only works with the ignition turned on. The
directions are displayed as initials :
N (North), NE (Northeast), E
(East),
SE (Southeast), S (South), SW (Southwest), W (West), NW
(Northwes t).

To avoid inaccurate dir ections, do not allow any remot e controls ,
e lectrical systems, or metal parts close to the mirror. •

Setting the magnetic deflection zone
The correct magnetic deflection zone must be set in order
to display the directions correctly .

Hold the@=> fig. 71 button down until the number of
the set magnetic deflection zone appears on the interior rear view mirror .
Adjust the magnetic deflection zone by repeatedly
pressing on the@ button. The set mode automat ically
deactivates after a few seconds .•

Calibrating the compass
The compass has to be recalibrated if the display is wrong
or inaccurate.
- Hold the @button down until the letter C is displayed on
the interior rear view mirror.
- Dr ive in a circle at a speed of about 5 mph (10 km/h) until
a direction is shown on the interior rear view mirror.
& WARNING
The digital compass is to be used as a directional aid only. Even
though you may want to look at it while you are driving, you must
still pay attention to traffic, road and weather conditions as well
as other possible hazards. •

Seats and storage
& WARNING
For strength-related reasons, heavy objects must not be hung on
the hooks. Heavy objects are not adequately secured -this
increases the risk of injury. •
Retractable luggage compartment cover
The luggage compartment cover keeps luggage or other
objects out of view.

Removing the luggage compartment cover
Detach the retaining straps=> fig. 89 at the rear hatch G).
-Pull the cover 0 horizontally out of the mount@ in the
direction of the arrow.
Installing the luggage compartment cover
- Push the cover horizontally into the mounts provided
=> fig. 89@ on the side panel until the cover seats.

& WARNING
• The luggage compartment cover must never be installed
without being secured -this creates an accident hazard.
• Whenever driving, never place any hard or heavy objects on the
luggage compartment or allow pets to sit on the luggage compart­
ment cover . They could become a hazard to vehicle occupants in
the event of sudden braking or in an accident.

Make sure that the heating wires in the rear lid do not get damaged
by objects scraping against them.
[ i ] Tips
• You can use the luggage compartment cover to store light
weight clothing but do not leave any heavy or sharp objects in the
pockets of the clothing.
• Remember that placing clothing on the luggage compartment
cover can block the driver's vision in the rear view mirror. This also
applies especially when you have to transport large objects.
• So that stale air can escape from the vehicle be sure not to cover
the ventilation slot between the rear lid and the luggage compart ­
ment cover installed. •

& WARNING
• The parking assist cannot replace the driver's attention. The
driver alone is responsible for parking and similar driving maneu­
vers. Always watch where you are driving.
• Sensors have blind spots in which objects cannot be detected.
Pay special attention to small children and animals. They cannot
always be detected by the sensors -danger of an accident!
• Always pay attention to the area around the vehicle -using the
rearview mirror, too .

Low obstacles already signaled by a warning can disappear from
the system's detection range as they are approached and will not
continue to be signaled. Objects such as barrier chains, trailer draw
bars, thin painted vertical poles, or fences may not be detected by
the system -risk of damage.

Cruise control
Switching the system on
The cruise control system makes it possible to drive at a
constant speed starting at 20 mph (30 km/h).
