This reminder appears along with the -symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch off
the ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the
engine again. What is more, you cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside. •

If the symbol illuminates, the light sensor has failed. For safety
reasons the low beams are turned on permanently with the switch
in
AUTO. However, you can continue to turn the lights on and off
using the light switch . In the case of a defect in the rain sensor, the
windshield wiper lever functions are still available. Have the

light/rain sensor checked as soon as possible by an authorized Audi
dealer. •

While this driver notification is displayed, you have to be prepared
for limited starting capability.
Driver message appears and goes out again
If this driver message appears after the ignition is turned on or
while driving and it goes out again after a while, the battery has
been adequately recharged.

Driver information display
In addition, all the values in the single -trip or the total -trip memory
can be deleted simultaneously.

All stored values will be lost if the vehicle battery is disconnected. •

All values in the single-trip or the total-trip memory can be reset to
zero simu ltaneously in the MMI. In addition you can determine what
driving information from the trip computer shou ld be shown in the
instrument cluster display . If one of the pieces of driver information
is turned
off, that driver in formation will not be shown in the display.
The information will continue to be calculated by the trip computer
and can be turned back
on at any time. •
Tire pressure monitoring system
General notes l )
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked
monthly when co ld and inflated to the inflation pressure recom­
mended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire
inflation pressure label. (If your vehicle has tires of a different size
than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pres­
sure label, you should determine the proper tire inflation pressure
for those tires.)
As an added safety feature, your vehicle has been equipped with a
tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of your tires is significantly
under-inf lated . Accordingly, when the low tire pressure telltale illu­
minates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible,
and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a significantly
under -inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire
failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiency and tire tread
life, and may affect the vehicle's handling and stopping ability.
Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute for proper tire mainte ­
nance, and it is the driver's responsibility to maintain correct tire .,_

The ignition key can only be removed when the selector

After turning off the ignition, the ignition key can only be removed
from the ignition lock when the selec tor lever is in the "P" (Park)

A co ld engine may sound loud after it has been started . This is due
to the hydrau lic valves building up oi l pressure. This is normal and
is not a n eed for concern .
If the engine does not start immediately, stop trying after 10
seconds and th en try to restart the engine about 30 seconds later . _.,

Stopping the engine

• Never turn off the engine until the vehicle has come to a
complete stop.
• The brake booster and servotroni c only work when the engine
is running . With the ignition turned off , you have to apply more
force when steering or braking . Since you cannot steer and stop

• The radiator fan can continue to run for up to 10 minutes even
after you have turned off the engine and removed the ignition key .
The radiator fan can also turn on again if the engine coolant heats
up because of inten se sunlight or heat build -up in the engine

Driver messages in the instrument cluster
display
If a function is not present, a driver message appears.
No key identified
This message appears when the [STAR T) button is pressed if there
is no master key inside the vehicle or if the system does not recog­
nize it . For example, the master key cannot be recognized if it is
covered by an object (e.g. aluminum brief case) which
screens the radio signal. Electronic devices such as cell phones can also inter­
fere with the radio signal.
Press brake pedal to start engine
This message appears if you press the [ START) button to start the
engine and do not depress the brake pedal. The engine can only be
started if the brake pedal is depressed.
Engage N or P to start engine
This message appears when the engine is started if the selector
lever for the automatic transmission is not in the P or N position.
The engine can only be started with the selector in these positions.
? Key not in vehicle
This message appears along with the symbol if the master key is
removed from the vehicle with the engine running. It is intended to
remind you (e.g. when changing drivers) not to continue the journey
without the master key.
If the master key is no longer in the vehicle, you cannot switch off
the ignition after stopping the engine and you also cannot start the engine again. Moreover, you cannot lock the vehicle from the
outside with the key.
Shift to P, otherwise vehicle can roll away. Doors do not lock if lever
is not in
P.
This message appears for safety reasons along with a warning
buzzer if the selector lever for the automatic transmission is not in
the P position when the ignition is switched off with the
[STOP)
button and the driver's door is opened. Move the selector lever to
the P position, otherwise the vehicle is not secured against rolling
away. You also cannot lock the vehicle using the locking button on
the door handle or using the remote key.

How does Adaptive Cruise Control work?
Vehicles traveling ahead are detected with the aid of a
radar sens or.

Adaptive Cruise Contro l uses a radar sensor in the fron t of the
vehic le=> fig. 160. The system has limitations=>
page 165. Things
t hat are not moving in your lane and in your direction of travel will
not be detected. The sensor measures the distance to reflective
surfaces that must have a certain size. The system responds only
after the distance measurement has been made. If a measurement
is not possible, the system cannot respond and wil l not react to a
vehic le or something else up ahead.
Op en ro ad
When the road is clear, the Adaptive Cruise Contro l works like cruise
control. It maintains a constant target speed specified by the driver.
D rivi ng in t raffi c
If a slower vehicle driving ahead is detected, the Adaptive Cruise
Control dece lerates (within the limits of the system)=>
page 164,
"Driver intervention prompt" and=> page 165, "System l imitations"
to its speed and after adjusting, tries to maintain the set distance
from the vehicle ahead. The vehicle may temporarily drive slower
than the set speed wh ile adjusting=>

If the vehicle in front acce lerates, Adaptive Cruise Control a lso accel­
era tes up to the speed that you have set .
If the vehicle ahead s lows to a stop, ACC wi ll slow your vehicle down
and to a complete stop if this is possible within the system's limits
and capabil ities . ACC will not make an emergency stop. The text
message
ACC off : manu al c ontro l! appears in the instrument c luster
display . Once the veh ic le stops, you must depress the brake peda l
to prevent the vehicle from moving forward or "creeping" .
Depressing the brake pedal turns off ACC. When the veh ic le ahead
acce lerates you can reactivate ACC =>
page 157, as soon as your
vehic le has reached a speed of 1 mph (2 km/h).
S ituati ons re quir in g dri ver int erve ntion
In some situations you will have to use the footbrake to slow the
vehic le down in order to keep a safe distance from vehic le in front
of you or to avoid a rear-end collision. In this situation, a symbol
appears and a warning tone sounds=>
page 164.
Passing anoth er v ehicl e
If you move into the passing lane and no vehicle is detected ahead,
the Adap tive Cruise Contro l accelerates to the speed you have set
and maintains it.
Ov erriding A CC
You can increase your speed at any time by stepping on the acceler ­
ator pedal. After you re lease the accelerator peda l, the system
adjusts back down to the speed you previously set.
Redu cin g stopping di stan ce
If the radar sensor detects that the distance to the vehicle ahead is
less than defined minimum d istance, the brakes are automat ically
prepared for emergency braking by the driver. The brake pads are
moved very c lose to the brake discs without actually braking the
vehic le. This brake assis tant feature reacts more quickly to the
driver's braking, and also works when Adap tive Cruise Contro l is off.
The stopping distance is reduced as a result of this advance brake .,_

General information
Your vehic le is equipped with an e lectronica lly controlled automatic
transmission. Upshifting and downshifting takes place
automati ­
cally.
The transmission is also equipped with tiptronic®. It allows the driver to shift gears
manually if desired => page 188. •

• You should perform braking maneu vers for the purpose of
cleaning the brake system only if road conditions permit . Other
road u sers mu st not be put at r isk -you may cause an a ccident!
• Before des cending a steep grade, reduce speed and shift trans ­
mission into a lower gear or lower dr iving range . Do not ride the
brakes or hold the pedal down too long or too often. This could
cause the brake s to get hot and diminish braking effi ciency .
• Do not "ride the brakes " by resting your foot on the pedal when
you do not intend to b rake. This may cause the br ake s to ove rheat ,
premature wear and increased stopping distance.
• Under ce rtain climat ic and operating condit ions such as
passing through water , driving in heavy rain or after washing the
vehi cle , the effectiveness of the brakes can be reduced . In winter ,
ice can a ccumulate on the brake pads , linings , discs and drums .
Carefully apply bra kes fo r a test . Brakes will dry and ice coatings
will be cleaned off after a few careful brake appli cations .
• Driving for an extended period of time on salt -co vered roads
without using your brakes can also affect braking effic iency. Clean
off accumulated salt coating from brake dis cs and pads with a few
c areful brake applications .
• If you damage the front spoile r, or if you install a different
spoiler, be sure the air flow to the front brakes is not ob structed.
Otherw ise the brake sy stem could overheat reducing the effective­
ness of the entire brake system .
• Failure of one bra ke cir cuit will impair the braking capability
resulting in an increased stopping distance. Avoid driving the
vehicle and ha ve it towed to the nearest authorized Audi dealer or
qualified workshop . •
Brake booster

The brake booster works with vacuum pressure which is created

& WARNING
• Never let the vehicle roll to a stop with the engine shut off.
• If the brake booster is not working, for example when towing
your vehicle, or because the brake boo ster has somehow been
damaged , the brake pedal must be pressed considerably harder to
make up for the lack of booster assistance . •
Functioning of A!"lt"-Lock Brake System (ABS)
ABS p revents the wheels from locking up unde r brakin g.
Th e ABS co ntribu tes effect ively to vehicle cont ro l since it preve nts
the whee ls from
locking when the brakes are app lied. This means
t h at the ve hicle rema ins steerable and is less l ikely to s kid.
With ABS you do not need to pump the brake . Just hold the brake
pedal down .
However, do not expec t the A BS to s hor ten bra king d istance u nder
all circumstances. When driving o n grave l or on newly fallen snow
o n t op o f icy sur faces, brak ing d istance may be ev en lon ger, the re­
fore, under these c ircumstances, it is especially important that you
driv e slow ly an d with gre at ca re.
How the ABS system works
An a utomatic c heck is m ade w hen a speed of about 1 2 mph (2 0
km/h) is reached. When this happens, a pumping noise can be
h ea rd.
