Reading lights

In the door contact switch position (switch @ in the middle po si­
tion) , the interior lights turn on as soon as you unlock the vehicle or
open the doors. The interior lights are a lso turned on when the igni ­
tion key is removed. The light goes out about 30 seconds after the
doors are closed. When th e vehic le is locked or when the igni tion is
turned on, the interior lights are turned o ff.
When a door is open, the interio r ligh ts are turned off after about 10
minutes to prevent d raining the battery.
The brightness of the l ights is controlled automatically by a dimmer
when they are switched on and off. •

Rear interior lights
There are reading lights in the rear for the passengers.

For vehicles with third row seating*, the luggage compartment light
can be switched on and off with the button -M-and used as a reading
light => fig. 70. The rear lid has to be closed.
The lights in the luggage compartment and in the rear lid switch on and off automatically when the lid is opened and closed.

If the rear lid remains open longer than 10 minutes, the luggage
compartment lights turn off automatically to prevent the vehicle
battery from discharging .•

-Rotate the control knob clockwise to increase the bright-
ness, and
- Rotate the control knob
count erclockwis e to reduce the
brightness.
When the vehicle is unlocked, the standard lighting turns on auto­
matically and dims after approx. 2 minutes, and when the ignition is
turned on it switches off immediately. .,

Rear window wiper iitJ
The wiper lever is also used to operate the rear window
wiper and the automatic wiper/washer function.

The rear window wiper and the automa tic wiper/washer
functions are activated as follows:
Intermittent wiping
- Push the wiper lever forward to the first position ©
=> fig. 76. The rear window wiper will wipe the window
approx. every fou r seconds.
Automatic wiper/washer function
- Push the wiper lever forward to the second stop, position
G), and hold it there for as long as you want the rear
wiper/washer to operate.
- Release the lever again. t he wiper will keep running for
approx . four seconds.

-Pull the lever all the way back to the original posit ion.

As soon as the reverse gear is engaged and the front wipers are
turned on and operating at the same time, the rear wiper a lso turns
on automatically.
& WARNING
Wiper blades are crucial for safe driving! Only in good condition
are they able to clear the windows properly to provide unre ­
stricted visibility. Worn or frayed wiper blades are a safety hazard!

In freezing or near freezing conditions:
• Always check that the wiper blades are not frozen to the glass
before you turn the wiper on. Loosen a wiper blade which is frozen
in place before operating the wiper to prevent damage to the wiper
blade or the wiper motor.
• Do not use the wiper to clear a frosted window. Using the wipers
as a convenient ice scraper will destroy the wiper blades. •

Headlight washer system
The headlight washer system cleans the headlights .
- Operate the winds hield wiper/washer system::::;, page 81,
fig. 75 G) with the headlights turned on by holding t he
lever for longer than one second .
The washer jets extend forward out of the front bumper driven by
water pressure to spray the front headlights with water .
You should inspect the headlights regularly (for examp le when refu­
eling) and clean off any solid dirt or insects from the lenses.
To ensure the system works properly in winter, keep the washer jets
free of snow and remove any ice using a de-icing spray.•

Automa tic dimming func tio n
The automatic dimming function is activated every time the ignition
is turned on . The green indicator light is lit to indicate auto dimming
is active.
When dim ming is activated, the inside m irror will darken
automati ­
cally
in response to the amount of light striking the mirror (such as
headlights from rearwa rd approaching vehicles). Even in dimm ing
mode, the mirror surface turns bright when :
• the interior light is switched on
• reverse gear is engaged .

mirror , autom atic dimming of the out side mirrors* will likewise be
dis abled .
• Check to make sure there are no objects preven ting light from
reaching the inside mirror.
• Do not attach any stickers to the windshie ld in front of the light
sensor*, as this would interfere with the automatic operation of the
headlig hts and the automatic d imming of the inside mirror.
• Be aware that automatic dimming of the inside mirror can only
operate properly if the rear window sun b lind* is retracted. •

estimate distances of fol lowing ve hicles when chang ing lanes, you
cou ld estimate incorrect ly and cause an accident .
• I f the mirro r housing is moved uninten tio nal ly ( for example,
while parking your vehicle), then you must first fo ld the mirror elec ­
tr ically. D o not readj ust the mirro r ho us ing manua lly . You could
damage the motor which contro ls the mirror .
• I f you take the veh ic le to an automatic car wash, y ou mus t fold
the exterior mirrors flat to prevent damaging them . Power folding
ex terior mirr ors* must no t be folded in or out by hand . Use the
power function!

If there shou ld be a malfunction in the electrica l system, you can
sti ll adj ust the outside mi rrors by pressing the edge of the mirro r.•

Automatic dimming for outside mirrors
The outside mirrors are dimmed together with the automatic
dimming o f the inside mir ror . When the ignition is switched on, the
mirrors dar ken au tomat ical ly dependin g on the light strik ing them
(e .g. head lights from the rear).
When t he in ter ior lig hting is switched on and when reverse gear is
engaged, the m irrors are switched back to the ir original brightness
(n ot di mmed).
& WARNING
The glass of the inside rear view mirror is layered and contain s an
ele ctrolyte to a chieve its propert ies . Be aware of liquid ele ctrolyte
leaking from a broken mirror gla ss. This liquid can cau se irritation

Following other vehicles too closely increases the risk of a crash
and serious personal injury .
• Following other vehi cles too closely , particularly at h igher
speeds increases the risk of colli sions and serious personal injury.
• Setting short distances to the traffic ahead reduces the time
and distance available to bring your vehicle to a safe stop and
makes it even more necessary to pay close attention to traffic .
• Always select a speed and distance to traffic ahead that is safe
and appropriate under the prevailing traffic , road , weather and
lighting conditions .
• Never rely on the distan ce control feature of ACC alone to
prevent rear-end collisions. Always be prepared to brake and take
evasive action to avoid collisions and other acc ident situations .
• Never allow the closing speed between you and other vehicles
to be so h igh that the Adaptive Cruise Control may not be able to
slow your vehicle safely. If closing speed is too high , you must
apply the brakes yourself to reduce the risk of a rear-end crash .
• Always select a greater following distance to the vehicle ahead
on wet roads than on dry roads .

Side assist uses radar sensors (not visible on outside) => fig. 185 to
help the driver check blind spots, and see what is happening in
traffic behind the vehicle =>
page 176, fig. 188.
Signal lights are built into both outside mirrors=> fig. 186. The
signal light on the left outside mir ror assists when moving over into the left lane and the signal light on the right outside mirror assists
when moving over into the right
lane.
The signal light comes on to tell you that side assist has detected a
vehicle on that side and that the position of this other vehicle
should be taken into account if you were to change lanes. This is
called the
informational stage signal=> page 176. The informational
stage signal is designed so that you notice it only when you are
looking in the outside mirror .
When you activate the turn signal and side assist detects a vehicle
in a notable location, the corresponding signal on the outside
mirror flashes briefly and brightly several times. This is the
alert
stage signal

When you ac tivate the turn signal, and side assist has detected a
vehic le in a notab le location on that particu lar sid e, the signal light
on this side mirror flashes brightly. The repea ted brief and bright
flash ing of the aler t stage signa l reminds you to carefully check
t raffic to the rear in the outside mirror and over your shoulder, so
that you can safely complete the lane change=>

If you activate your turn signal in driving situation @, the signal
briefly flashes repeated ly. Side assist is alerting you to a vehicle that
