CAUTION
nOffroad driving precautions
Always observe the following precautions to help minimize the risk of serious
personal injury or damage to your vehicle:
lDrive carefully when off the road. Do not take unnecessary risks by driving
in dangerous places.
lDo not grip the steering wheel spokes when driving off−road. A bad bump
could jerk the wheel and injure your hands. Keep both hands and espe−
cially your thumbs on the outside of the rim.
lAlways check your brakes for effectiveness immediately after driving in
sand, mud, water or snow.
lAfter driving through tall grass, mud, rock, sand, rivers, etc., check that
there is no grass, bush, paper, rags, stone, sand, etc. adhering or trapped
on the underbody. Clear off any such matter from the underbody. If the
vehicle is used with these materials trapped or adhering to the underbody,
a breakdown or fire could occur.
l
When driving off−road or in rugged terrain, do not drive at excessive
speeds, jump, make sharp turns, strike objects, etc. This may cause loss
of control or vehicle rollover causing death or serious injury. You are also
risking expensive damage to your vehicle’s suspension and chassis.

When driving
Trailer towing
Your vehicle is designed primarily as a passengerandload car
rying vehicle. Towing a trailer will have an adverse effect on han
dling, performance, braking, durability, and fuel consumption.
For your safety and the safety of others, do not overload the vehi
cle or trailer.
To tow a trailer safely, use extreme care and drive the vehicle in
accordance with the trailer ’s characteristics and operating condi
tions.
The vehicle stability and braking performance are affected by
trailer stability, brake setting and performance, and the hitch.
Toyota warranties do not apply to damage or malfunction caused
by towing a trailer for commercial purposes.
Contact your Toyota dealer for fu rther information about additional
requirements such as a towing kits, etc.

Cleaning and protecting the vehicle exterior
nAutomatic car washes
lFold the mirrors back and retract the antenna before washing the vehicle.
lBrushes used in automatic car washes may scratch the vehicle surface
and harm your vehicle’s paint.
nHigh pressure car washes
lDo not allow the nozzles of the car wash to come within close proximity
of the windows.
lBefore car wash, check that the fuel filler door is closed.
nAluminum wheels
Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use hard
brushes or abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical cleaners.
Use the same mild detergent and wax as used on the paint.
nBumpers and side moldings
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners. Perform the following to protect the vehicle and maintain it in prime
condition.
lWorking from top to bottom, liberally apply water to the vehicle
body, wheel wells and underside of the vehicle to remove any
dirt and dust.
Wash the vehicle body using a sponge or soft cloth, such as a cham−
ois.
lFor hard−to−remove marks, use car wash soap and rinse thor−
oughly with water.
lWipe away any water.
l
Wax the vehicle when the waterproof coating deteriorates.
If water does not bead on a clean surface, apply wax when the vehi−
cle body is cool.

Maintenance and care
Wheels
If a wheel is bent, cracked or heavily corroded, it should be
replaced.
Otherwise, the tire may separate from the wheel or cause loss of
handling control.
nWheel selection
When replacing wheels, care should be taken to ensure that
they are equivalent to those removed in load capacity, diameter,
rim width, and offset.
Replacement wheels are available at your Toyota dealer.
Toyota does not recommend using:
lWheels of different sizes or types
lUsed wheels
l
Bent wheels that have been straightened
n
Aluminum wheel precautions
l
Use only Toyota wheel nuts and wrenches designed for use
with your aluminum wheels.
l
When rotating, repairing or changing your tires, check that the
wheel nuts are still tight after driving 1000 miles (1600 km).
lBe careful not to damage the aluminum wheels when using
tire chains.
lUse only Toyota genuine balance weights or equivalent and a
plastic or rubber hammer when balancing your wheels.

5−2. Steps to take in an emergency
If the engine will not star t
If the engine still does not start after following the correct starting
procedure ( P. 149) or releasing the steering lock ( P. 151), confirm
the following points.
nThe engine will not start when the starter motor operates
normally.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
l
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
lThe engine may be flooded.
Try to restart the engine once more following correct starting
procedures. (P. 150)
l
There may be a malfunction inthe engine immobilizer system.
(P. 9 3 )
n
The starter motor turn over slowly, the interior lights and
headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or sounds at
a low volume.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
l
The battery may be discharged. ( P. 484)
lThe battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
n
The starter motor does not turn over.
The engine starting system may
be malfunctioning due to an
electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. How−
ever, an interim measure is available to start the engine.

Emergency start function
When the engine does not start, the following steps can be used as
an interim measure to start the engine if the “ENGINE START STOP”
switch is functioning normally.
Set the parking brake.
Put the shift lever in “P”.
Set the “ENGINE START ST
OP” switch to ACCESSORY
mode.
Press and hold the “ENGINE START STOP” switch about 15
seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
Even if the engine can be start
ed using the above st eps, the system
may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checked by your Toyota
dealer. nThe starter motor does not turn over, the interior lights and
headlights do not turn on, or the horn does not sound.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
l
One or both of the battery terminals may be disconnected.
l
The battery may be discharged. ( P. 484)
lThere may be a malfunction in the steering lock system.
Contact your Toyota dealer if the problem cannot be repaired, or if
repair procedures are unknown.

If you cannot operate back door opener
Remove the cover on the back
door trim.
Remove the screw and cover.
Push the lever with the back
door motor, open the back door.
If the back door opener does not operate, there may be a problem
with the back door opener system
. Have the vehicle inspected by
your Toyota dealer immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the back door can be opened from the inside.
