NOTE●
The backdoor is equipped with an oil damper type back- door stopper, enabling you to hold the backdoor at a desired position.
●
While opening or closing the backdoor, you may feel slight resistance. This is a st
ructural feature of the back-
door stopper that supports the backdoor and does not indi- cate any abnormality.
To lock or unlock from outside the vehicle (Except for vehicles with
keyless entry system)
WARNING
!●
It is dangerous to drive with the backdoor open since carbon monoxide (CO)
gas can enter the cabin.
You cannot see or smell
CO. It can cause uncon-
sciousness and even death.CAUTION
!●
When the backdoor is open
, the rear-right combina-
tion lamp is obscured
by the spare wheel.
If the backdoor is opened
while the vehicle is parked
on the road, alert other r
oad users to the vehicle’s
presence using a warning tr
iangle or other device as
required by local legislation.
●
When closing the backdoor, always ensure your or other person’s fingers cannot
be caught by the back-
door.

Diesel particulate filter (DPF)
*
E00619800027
The diesel particulate filter
(DPF) is a device that captures
most of the particulate matter
(PM) in the exhaust emissions of
the diesel engine. The DPF auto
matically burns away trapped
PM during vehicle operation. Under certain driving conditions, however, the DPF is not able to burn away all of the trapped PM and, as a result, an exces
sive amount of PM accumulates
inside it.NOTE●
To minimize the likelihood
of excessive accumulation of
PM, try to avoid driving for long periods at low speeds and repeatedly driv
ing short distances.
DPF warning lampThe DPF warning lamp comes on or
flashes in the event of an
abnormality in the DPF system
. Provided the DPF system is
working normally, the DPF warning lamp comes on when the ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position and goes off a few seconds later.
WARNING
!●
The DPF reaches very high temperatures. Do not park your vehicle in areas where combustible mate- rials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust system since a fire could occur.CAUTION
!●
Do not use any type of fuel or engine oil that is not specified for your vehicle.
Also, do not use any mois-
ture-removing agent or other fuel additive. Such substances could have a de
trimental effect on the
DPF. Refer to “Fuel selection” on page 2 and “Engine oil” on page 8-6.

Inspection and main
tenance following
rough road operation
E00606700048
After operating the vehicle in rough road conditions, be sure to perform the following inspection and maintenance procedures: ●
Check that the vehicle has not been damaged by rocks, gravel, etc.
●
Carefully wash the vehicle with water. After washing, drive the vehicle slowly while lightlydepressing the brake pedal in order to dry out the brakes. If the brakes still do not function properly, we recommend you to have the brakes checked as soon as possible.
●
Remove the insects, dried grass, etc. clogging the radiator core.
●
After crossing a stream, be sure to have the following items inspected at a MITS
UBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point and take the necessary measures. • Check the brake system and,
if necessary, have it serv-
iced. • Check the engine, transmissi
on, transfer, and differential
oil or grease level and turbid
ity. If the oil or grease is
milky, it indicates water co
ntamination. Replace it with
new oil or grease. • Grease the propeller shaft.• Check the inside of the vehi
cle. If ingress of water is
found, dry the carpet etc. • Inspect the headlamps. If th
e headlamp bulb is flooded
with water, we recommend you to have it drained.
Cautions on handling
of 4-wheel drive
vehicles
E00606800401
Tyres and wheelsSince the driving torque can be
applied to the 4 wheels, the per-
formance of the vehicle when
operating in 4-wheel drive is
greatly affected by th
e condition of the tyres.
Pay close attention to the tyres. ●
Install specified tyres on all
wheels. Refer to “Tyres and
wheels” on page 9-13.
●
Be sure to fit all 4 tyres an
d wheels of the same size and
type. When replacement of any of th
e tyres or wheels is neces-
sary, replace all of them.
●
All tyres should be rotated
whenever the wear difference
between the front and rear tyres is recognizable.

4
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a dif- ference in wear between tyres. Refer to “Tyre rotation” on page 8-21. ●
Check the tyre inflation pressure regularly.
●
If the tyre inflation pressure
is inappropriate, the transfer
gear may make some noise and shock while changing the drive mode.
To w i n gIf towing is necessary, we recommend you to have it done byyour MITSUBISHI MOTORS Authorized Service Point or acommercial tow
truck service.
In the following cases, transpor
t the vehicle using a tow truck.
●
The engine runs but the vehicle does not move or abnor- mal noise is produced.
●
Inspection of the vehicle’s und
erside reveals that oil or
some other fluid is leaking.
Only when you cannot receive a towing service from a MIT- SUBISHI MOTORS Authorized
Service Point or commercial
tow truck service, tow your ve
hicle carefully in accordance
with the instructions given in “Towing” on page 6-29.
CAUTION
!●
Always use tyres of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences.Using tyres which differ in size, type, brand or the degree of wear will cause excessive loading, resulting in possible damage to the drive system.
CAUTION
!●
Be sure to shift the tran
sfer shift lever to the “2H”
position. Never try to tow with the transfer shift lever in the “4H”, “4HLc” or “4LLc” positions and with any of the wheels on
the ground (Type A or B).
This could result in damage to the vehicle’s driving system, or the vehicle could become separated from the tow truck and unexpected
accident might result.
If you cannot shift the tr
ansfer shift lever to “2H”
position or the transmission is malfunctioning or damaged, transport the ve
hicle with all the wheels
on a carriage (Type C or D) as illustrated.

1. Park the car on a horizontal surface. 2. Switch off the engine. 3. Wait a few minutes. 4. Remove the dipstick and wi
pe it with a clean cloth.
5. Reinsert the dipstick as far as it goes. 6. Remove the dipstick and read the oil level, which should
always be within the range indicated.
7. If the oil level is below the specified limit, remove the cap
located on the cylinder head cover and add enough oil to raise the level to within the specified range. Do not over-fill to avoid engine damage. Be sure to use the specified engine oil and do not mix various types of oil.
8. After adding oil, cl
ose the cap securely.
9. Confirm the oil level by repeating step 4 to 6. Use only the recommended oils wi
th an ACEA or API classifi-
cation as specified in this manual.
NOTE●
Engine oil consumption is greatly influenced by payload, engine speed, etc. It may
reach 1.0 lit./1,000 km depend-
ing on style of driving.
●
The engine oil will deterior
ate rapidly if the vehicle is
subjected to severe conditions, requiring earlier oil replacement. Please refer to the maintenance schedule.
●
For handling of used engine oils, refer to page 8.

Wheel condition
E01001800478
Check the tyres for cuts, cracks and other damage. Replace the tyres if there are deep cuts or
cracks. Also check each tyre for
pieces of metal or pebbles. The use of worn tyres can be very dangerous because of thegreater chance of skidding or h
ydroplaning. The tread depth of
the tyres must exceed 1.6 mm in
order for the tyres to meet the
minimum requirement for use.
Tread wear indicators will appear in six places on the surface of the tyre as the tyre wears, thereby indicating that the tyre no longer meets the minimum requ
irement for use. When these
wear indicators appear, the tyre
s must be replaced with new
ones. When replacement of any of the tyres is necessary, replace all of them.Replacing tyres and wheels

CAUTION
!●
Always use tyres of the same size, same type, and same brand, and which have no wear differences. Using tyres of different size, type, brands or degreeof wear, will increase th
e differential oil tempera-
ture, resulting in possible damage to the driving sys- tem. Further, the drive train will be subjected toexcessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious faults.CAUTION
!●
Avoid using different size tyres from the one listed and the combined use of di
fferent types of tyres, as
this can affect driving safety. Refer to “Tyres and wheels” on page 9-13.

Replacement of lamp bulbs
E01003100521
Before replacing a bulb, ensure the lamp is off. Do not touch the glass part of the new bulb with your bare fingers; the skin oil left on the glass will evapor
ate when the bulb gets hot and
the vapor will condense on th
e reflector and dim the surface.
NOTE●
Do not attempt to repair or
replace the lamp bulbs other
than described in this owner’s manual. For repair or replacement, contact a MITS
UBISHI MOTORS Author-
ized Service Point.
●
If you are unsure of how to carry out the work as required, we recommend you to consult a specialist.
●
Be careful not to scratch the vehicle body when removing a lamp or lens.
●
When it rains or when the
vehicle has been washed, the
inside of the lens sometimes becomes foggy. This is the same phenomenon as when window glass mists up on a humid day, and does not indicate a functional problem. When the lamp is switched on, the heat will remove the fog. However, if water gathers inside the lamp, we recom- mend you to have it checked.
