Maximum towable weight with brake and maxi- mum trailer-nose weightNever exceed the maximum towabl
e weight with brake and the
maximum trailer-nose weight as
listed in the specifications.
(Refer to “Vehicle weight” on page 9-7.)If you tow a trailer at an altitude of more than 1,000 m above sea-level, reduce your weight by 10 % of the gross combina- tion weight for every increase
of 1,000 m above sea-level, as
the engine output is lowered owing to decrease in atmospheric pressure.
Towing bar mounting specificationsSee the following table for fixing points (A) for the towing bar.

Operating hints●
Do not let the clutch slip (vehicles with a M/T only) and do not increase the engine speed more than necessarywhen starting.
●
Be sure that the driving speed does not exceed the 100 km/h (62 mph) for trailer operation. It is also recommended that you
obey the local regulations
in case driving speed with a tr
ailer is limited to less than
100 km/h (62 mph).
●
To prevent shocks from the
overrun brake, depress the
brake pedal lightly at first and then more strongly.
●
To make full use of engine braking, change to a lower gear before descending a slope.
Additional precautions for vehicles equipped with an A/TThe 2nd gear (in “Sports mode”)
is recommended on slopes or
at low speed. Use the 1st gear (i
n “Sports mode”) in mountain-
ous areas in order to make better use of engine braking and to assist the brake system. However,
be sure that the speed does
not exceed the maximum speed
limit for the selected gear.

Air conditioning switch
E00703500886
Push the switch to turn the air conditioning on, indication lamp (A) will come on. Push the switch again to switch it off.
NOTE●
If a problem is detected in
the air conditioning compres-
sor, the air conditioning operation indication lamp (A) blinks. Stop the vehicle in a sa
fe place, turn off the engine,
then restart the engine. If the air conditioning operationindication lamp does not blink, there is no problem. If it does brink, we recommend you to have it checked.
●
Sometimes, for example afte
r using a high-pressure car
wash, the condenser can get we
t, and the operation indica-
tion lamp (A) blinks temporarily. In this case there is nothing wrong. Stop the vehicl
e in a safe place, turn off
the engine, then restart the
engine. Once the water evapo-
rates, the blinking will stop.
CAUTION
!●
When using the air condit
ioning, the idling speed
may slightly increase as
the air conditioning com-
pressor is switched on/off
automatically. While the
vehicle with an A/T is st
ationary, fully depress the
brake pedal to prevent th
e vehicle from creeping.

Operating the system in automatic mode
E00704100456
In normal conditions, use the sy
stem in the AUTO mode and
follow these procedures: 1. Push the AUTO switch.2. Select the temperature contro
l dial to the desired tempera-
ture. The mode selection (excep
t for “ ”), blower speed
adjustment, recirculat
ed/outside air sel
ection, temperature
adjustment and air conditioner
ON/OFF status are all con-
trolled automatically.
NOTE●
When the temperature is set
to the highest or the lowest
setting under the AUTO operation, the air selection and the air conditioning will be automatically changed as fol-lows. Also, if the air selection is
operated manually after an
automatic changeover, manual
operation will be selected.
• Quick Heating (When the temperature is set to the high- est setting) Outside air will be introduced.• Quick Cooling (When the temp
erature is set to the low-
est setting) Inside air will be recirculated and the air conditioningwill operate.CAUTION
!●
For vehicles with A/T, while the vehicle is stationary, fully depress the brake peda
l to prevent the vehicle
from creeping caused by
slightly increased idling
speed when the air cond
itioning compressor is
switched on automatically.

If the vehicle breaks down
E00800100505
If the vehicle breaks down on th
e road, move it to the shoulder
and use the hazard warning flashers and/or the warning triangle etc.Refer to “Hazard warning fl
asher switch” on page 3-66.
If the engine stops/failsVehicle operation and control are
affected if the engine stops.
Before moving the vehicle to a
safe area, be aware of the fol-
lowing:●
The brake booster becomes inoperative and the pedal effort will increase. Press down the brake pedal harder than usual.
●
Since the power steering pump is no longer operative, the steering wheel feels
heavy when turning it. Turn the wheel
with more effort than usual.
Emergency starting
E00800501287
If the engine cannot be started
because the battery is weak or
dead, the battery from another ve
hicle can be used with jumper
cables to start the engine.
WARNING
!●
To start the engine using
jumper cables connected to
another vehicles, perfor
m the correct procedures
according to the instructio
n below. Incorrect proce-
dures could result in a fire or explosion or damage to the vehicles.CAUTION
!●
Do not attempt to start the engine by pulling or pushing the vehicle. It could damage your vehicle.
●
Always wear protective eye goggles when working near the battery.
●
Keep the battery out of the reach of children.

For emergencies
6-3
6
1. Get the vehicles close en
ough so the jumper cables can
reach, but be sure the vehicles
aren’t touching each other.
2. Set the parking brake firmly
on each vehicle. Put an auto-
matic transmission in “P” (PARK) or a manual transmis- sion in “N” (Neutral). Turn
off the ignition switch.
3. Turn off all lamps, heater
and other electrical loads.
4. Make sure battery electrolyte is at the proper level.
Refer to “Battery” on page 8-16.
CAUTION
!●
Check the other vehicle. It
must have a 12-volt bat-
tery. If the other system isn’t 12-volt, shorting can dam- age both vehicles. WARNING
!●
Turn off the ignition on
both vehicles beforehand.
Make sure that the cables or your clothes cannot be caught by the fan or dr
ive belt. Personal injury
could result.
WARNING
!●
If electrolyte fluid is not vi
sible, or appears to be fro-
zen, Do Not Attempt Jump Starting! A battery might rupture or
explode if the tempera-
ture is below the freezing poin
t or if it is not filled to
the proper level.

NOTE●
If the vehicle is put in motion without fully charging the battery, it might cause the loss of smooth engine operation and the anti-lock brake warning lamp to illuminate. Refer to “Anti-lock brake system (ABS)” on page 4-58.
Engine overheating
E00800600991
If the water temperature gauge
indication remains in the over-
heating zone for a long time, the engine may be overheating. If this occurs, take the foll
owing corrective measures:
1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place. 2. Check whether steam is comin
g from the engine compart-
ment. [If steam does not come from
the engine compartment]
With the engine still running, raise the bonnet to ventilate the engine compartment. [If steam is coming from
the engine compartment]
Stop the engine, and when the steam stops, raise the bon- net to ventilate the engine
compartment. Restart the
engine.
WARNING
!●
Do not open the bonnet wh
ile steam is coming from
the engine compartment. It could cause steam or hot water to spurt out, causin
g burns. Hot water could
spurt out even when there is no steam coming out, and some parts will be very
hot. Be very careful
when opening
the bonnet.
●
Be careful of hot steam, which could be blowing off the reserve tank cap.
●
Do not attempt to remove the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

How to change a tyre
E00801201757
Before changing a tyre, first stop your vehicle in a safe, flat location. 1. Park the vehicle on level and stable ground.2. Set the parking brake firmly. 3. On vehicles with manual transmission, turn the ignition
key to the “LOCK” position, move the gearshift lever tothe “R” (Reverse) position. On vehicles with automatic transmission, move the selec- tor lever to the “P” (PARK) position, turn the ignition keyto the “LOCK” position.
4. Turn on the hazard flashers an
d set up a warning triangle,
flashing signal lamp, etc., at an
adequate distance from the
vehicle, and have all your
passengers leave the vehicle.
