The tailgate (when unlocked) can only be
opened from outside using the powered
handle A-fig. 71located beneath the

Never exceed the maximum
allowed load in the boot (see
section “Technical Specifications”).
Make sure that the objects are well
arranged in the boot so that they will
not be projected forwards following
sudden braking.
WARNING
If you travel in areas with
few filling stations and you
want to transport fuel in a spare tank,
respect applicable laws and exclu-
sively use a type-approved suitably
secured tank. However, the risks in
case of collision increase.

STARTING
AND DRIVING
ENGINE STARTING
The vehicle is provided with an electron-
ic engine lock device: refer to “The Fiat
CODE system” paragraph in the section
“Dashboard and controls” if the engine
will not start.
The engine may be noisier during the first
seconds of operation, particularly after a
long period of inactivity. This does not im-
pair engine operation and reliability, and is
typical of hydraulic tappets: the distribu-
tion system for the petrol engine of your
vehicle has been selected to minimise
maintenance.ENGINE START-UP
PROCEDURE FOR
PETROL VERSIONS
Proceed as follows:
❒ensure that the handbrake is up;
❒put the gear lever into neutral;
❒press the clutch pedal all the way down
without touching the accelerator;
❒turn the ignition key to AVVand let it
go the moment the engine starts.
If the engine does not start at the first at-
tempt, return the ignition key to STOP
before repeating starting.
If with the ignition key on MARthe warn-
ing light Yremains lit together with
warning light
U, turn the key to STOP
and then back to MAR; if the warning light
remains on, try with the other keys pro-
vided with the vehicle.
If the engine still will not start, perform an
emergency start (see “Emergency start”
in section “In an emergency”) and then
contact a Fiat Dealership. It is advisable not to demand
maximum performance from
your vehicle (e.g. excessive
accelerations, long distances
at top rpm, excessive intense braking,
etc.) as soon as the engine is started.
When the engine is switched
off, never leave the ignition
key in the MAR position to
prevent pointless current ab-
sorption from draining the battery.
Remember that the servo-
brake and electric power
steering are not operational until the
engine is started. Therefore, more ef-
fort than usual is required on the
brake pedal and steering wheel.
WARNING
It is dangerous to have the
engine running indoors. The
engine depletes oxygen and dis-
charges carbon dioxide, carbon
monoxide and other toxic gases.

Injection system failure
Under normal conditions, when the igni-
tion key is moved to MAR, the warning
light turns on and should go off after en-
gine start-up.
If the warning light stays on or turns on
when travelling, a fault in the supply/igni-
tion system has occurred, which could
cause high emissions at the exhaust, pos-
sible lack of performance, poor handling
and high fuel consumption levels.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.
In these conditions, the vehicle can con-
tinue travelling at moderate speed with-
out demanding excessive effort from the
engine. Go to a Fiat Dealership as soon as
possible. SEAT BELTS
NOT FASTENED
(red)
The warning light in the panel turns on
steadily when the vehicle is not running
and the seat belt on the driver’s side is not
correctly fastened. The warning light
blinks, and a buzzer goes off, when the ve-
hicle is running and the front seat belts are
not correctly fastened.
The buzzer of the S.B.R. (Seat Belt Re-
minder) system can only be switched off
by a Fiat Dealership.
On some versions the system can be re-
activated from the setup menu.INCOMPLETE
DOOR LOCKING (red)
On certain versions the warning light turns
on when one or more doors or the tail-
gate are not properly shut.
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.
MINIMUM
ENGINE OIL LEVEL
(red)
Turning the ignition key to MARthe
warning light on the panel turns on, but
it should go off after a few seconds.
The warning light goes on in the panel
when the oil level drops below the mini-
mum value. Top up the oil to the correct
level (see “Level checking” in section
“Maintenance and care”).
On certain versions the dedicated mes-
sage is displayed.

PERIODIC CHECKING
Every 1,000 km or before long journeys,
check and top up if required:
❒engine coolant fluid level;
❒brake fluid level;
❒windscreen washer fluid level;
❒tyre pressure and conditions;
❒operation of lights (headlights, direction
indicators, emergency lights, etc.);
❒operation of the windscreen wiper/
washer system, position and wear of
the windscreen and rear window wiper
blades (where provided);
Every 3,000 km check the following and
top-up, if required: engine oil level.
You are recommended to use FL Sele-
niaproducts, designed and produced
specifically for Fiat vehicles (see table “Re-
fuelling” in section “Technical specifica-
tions”).
DEMANDING
VEHICLE USE
Should prevailing use of the vehicle be un-
der one of the following specially heavy
conditions:
❒trailer towing;
❒dusty roads;
❒short repeated distances (less than 7-
8 km) and with external temperatures
below zero;
❒frequently idling engine or long distance
low speed driving (e.g. taxis or door-to-
door deliveries) or in case of a long
term inactivity;
❒urban driving;
perform the following inspections more
frequently than shown on the Scheduled
Servicing Plan:
❒check front disk brake pad conditions
and wear;❒check cleanness of bonnet and boot
locks and lever cleanness and lubrica-
tion;
❒visually inspect the conditions of: the
engine, gearbox, transmission, pipes and
hoses (exhaust - fuel - brakes), rubber
parts (boots, sleeves, bushes, etc.);
❒check the battery and the battery fluid
(electrolyte) (this check must be car-
ried out by skilled personnel only or by
the Fiat Dealership – also refer to the
instructions provided in the “Battery”
paragraph of this section);
❒visually check the various drive belt
conditions;
❒check pollen filter and replace it, if re-
quired;
