Battery
5
\3 BatteryYour vehicle may be equipped with two
batteries, depending on the equipment
version:\4
Starter battery in the battery recess
in the driver’s footwell
\4
Auxiliary battery* in the engine com-
partment
iThe auxiliary battery* in the engine
compartment is not suitable for
jump-starting operations. Only use
the jump-starting connection in the
engine compartment if you require
jump-starting assistance or wish to
provide jump-starting assistance
(\2
page 581).
Warning
G
Observe the safety notes in the “Opera-
tion” section (\2page 335).
Do not place any metal objects on the bat-
tery. Doing so can cause a short circuit.
Use only impact-resistant batteries with a
central gas release cover to prevent cor-
rosion damage and to protect occupants
from caustic burns in the event of an acci-
dent.

5
Have the batteries removed at an autho-
rized Sprinter Dealer which has the nec-
essary specialist knowledge and tools to
carry out the work required.
The manufacturer recommends that you
use an authorized Sprinter Dealer for
this purpose.
Disconnecting the batteryWarning
G
There is a risk of a short circuit if the pos-
itive terminal of the connected battery
comes into contact with vehicle parts.
The highly explosive gas mixture could ig-
nite as a result. You and others could be
seriously injured as a result.

Warning (Continued)
G
\4Do not place any metal objects or
tools on the batteries.
\4When disconnecting the batteries, al-
ways disconnect the negative termi-
nals first and then the positive
terminals.
\4When reconnecting the batteries, al-
ways reconnect the positive terminals
first and then the negative terminals.
\4Do not loosen or disconnect the ter-
minal clamps on the batteries while
the engine is running.

The screws must protrude beyond
the recesses.
Warning
G
The movement of the pedals must not be ob-
structed. The vehicle’s operating and road
safety are otherwise jeopardized.
Make sure to push the floor covering under
the plate metal bracket of the accelerator
pedal. The floor covering may not slip bet-
ween the bracket and the accelerator pedal.
Otherwise, you may not be able to fully
depress the accelerator pedal, which will
restrict the vehicle’s acceleration capability,
for example when passing another vehicle.

5
\1
Switch off all electrical consumers.
\1
Connect the positive terminal and
secure the cover.
\1
Connect the negative terminal.
Warning
G
Only charge the battery in well-ventilated
areas. As the battery is being charged,
gases can escape and generate minor ex-
plosions, which can injure you and others
and may cause damage to the paintwork
or permit acid corrosion on the vehicle.
During the charge procedure, there is a
risk of acid burns due to gases escaping
from the battery. Do not, therefore, lean
over the battery while it is being re-
charged.
iIt is also possible to charge the start-
er battery using the jump-starting
connection point in the engine com-
partment (
\2
page 581).
Reconnecting the battery!
CAUTION
Never swap the terminal clamps.
Otherwise, the vehicle’s electronics
system may be damaged. After re-
connecting the battery, you must re-
set the electric sliding door*
(\2
page 92).

Jump-starting
5
\3 Jump-startingIf the starter battery in the battery re-
cess in the driver’s footwell is dis-
charged, the engine can be jump-started
from another vehicle using jump leads.
For this purpose, the vehicle is equipped
with a jump-starting connection point.
Please note:
\4
Jump-starting must only be per-
formed when the engine and catalyt-
ic converter are cold.
\4
Do not start the engine if the battery
has frozen. Let the battery thaw out
first.
\4
Only use a battery of the same rated
voltage and of approximately the
same capacity for jump-starting.
\4
Only use jumper cables of adequate
cross-section with insulated battery
terminal clamps.
iThe auxiliary battery* in the engine
compartment is not suitable for
jump-starting operations. Only use
the jump-starting connection in the
engine compartment if you require
jump-starting assistance or wish to
provide jump-starting assistance.
!
CAUTION
Avoid repeated and lengthy starting
attempts.
Never start the vehicle using a rapid
battery charger.
Warning
G
Avoid creating sparks. Keep naked flames
away from the battery, and do not smoke.
Comply with safety precautions and spe-
cial protective measures when handling
batteries (\2page 335).

5
Use a rigid towing bar and secure this
only to the front towing eye
(\2
page 585).
Tow-starting!
CAUTION
Your vehicle is equipped with an au-
tomatic transmission. Do not tow-
start your vehicle.
Warning
G
When tow-starting another vehicle, its
weight should not be greater than the per-
missible gross weight of your vehicle.

Towing
5
\3 Towing
Comply with legal regulations when tow-
ing.Having the vehicle carried away on a
transporter or trailer is preferable to
towing it away. We recommend the use
of a rigid towing bar if towing is neces-
sary.
The fixture for the front towing eye is lo-
cated behind the cover in the bumper on
the right-hand side when viewed in the
direction of travel.
Warning
G
Tow the vehicle using a rigid towing bar if:the engine is not running, there is a malfunction in the power supply
or the vehicle’s electrical system. There is no power assistance for the
steering and braking when the engine is
not running. You must then use signifi-
cantly greater force to steer the vehicle
and brake.
Continued
Warning (Continued)
G
Do not tow the vehicle if the key cannot
be turned in the ignition lock. The steering
is then locked and it will not be possible
to steer the vehicle. When towing another vehicle, its weight
should not be greater than the permissi-
ble gross weight of your vehicle.

589 Practical hintsFuses
5
\3 Fuses
The fuses and relays for the standard
equipment are in the main fuse box in
the footwell on the left-hand side of the
vehicle.\1
Switch off the ignition and electrical
consumers before replacing fuses. The fuse box is in the footwell on the left-
hand side of the vehicle.
Warning
G
Only use fuses of the amperage recom-
mended by the manufacturer. Any autho-
rized Sprinter Dealer will be happy to
advise you.
Do not attempt to repair or bridge blown
fuses.
Have the cause determined and rectified
at a qualified specialist workshop, e.g. an
authorized Sprinter Dealer.
iAdditional fuses and relays for the
optional equipment are in the fuse
box in the driver’s seat.
Main fuse boxiThe fuse allocation chart for the fuse
boxes is in the vehicle document wal-
let in the glove box and names all the
numbered fuses.
