Checking Things Under
the Hood
{CAUTION:
Things that burn can get on hot engine parts
and start a re. These include liquids like fuel,
oil, coolant, brake uid, windshield washer and
other uids, and plastic or rubber. You or
others could be burned. Be careful not to drop
or spill things that will burn onto a hot engine.
Hood Latches
To tilt the hood forward, pull back and up on each of the
hood latches, located above the wheel wells on both
sides of the vehicle.

If the low oil light appears
on the instrument cluster,
check the engine oil level
right away.

page 3-38. You should check the engine oil level
regularly; this is an added reminder.
Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine oil every time you
get fuel. In order to get an accurate reading, the oil
must be warm and the vehicle must be on level ground.
The engine oil dipstick is
located in the engine
compartment on the
driver’s side of the vehicle.
1. Turn off the engine and give the oil several minutes
to drain back into the oil pan. If you do not do this,
the oil dipstick might not show the actual level.
2. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towel
or cloth, then push it back in all the way. Remove it
again, keeping the tip down, and check the level.

Checking Engine Oil
It is a good idea to check the engine oil level every time

The engine oil dipstick is
located in the engine
compartment on the driver
side of the vehicle.

be at normal operating temperature, so that the oil
is warm, and the vehicle must be on level ground.
1. If the engine is at normal operating temperature and
the oil is warm, turn off the engine and allow at
least five minutes for the oil to drain back into the
oil pan. If you do not do this, the oil dipstick
might not show the actual level.If the engine has not been run long enough to bring
it up to normal operating temperature and the oil
is cool, turn off the engine and allow 30 minutes for
the oil to drain back into the oil pan. If you do not do
this, the oil dipstick might not show the actual level.
2. Pull out the dipstick and clean it with a paper towel
or a cloth, then push it back in all the way.
3. Remove the dipstick again, keeping the tip down,

When to Add Engine Oil
Notice:Do not add too much oil. Keep the oil level
between the ADD and FULL marks on the dipstick.
Under normal engine operation, the engine oil
level can increase above the FULL mark as a result
of DPF regeneration. A small increase in the oil
level is normal. If the engine has so much oil that
the oil level reaches the wider portion (A) on the
dipstick, the engine oil must be changed as soon as
possible or the engine could be damaged.
