This overview is to assist you in familiarizing yourself with
the air conditioning controls .

The left side of the display shows the temperature selected for the
rear passenger on the left, the right side shows the temperature
selected for the rear passenger on the right . If the air conditioning
settings are changed, this appears briefly in the corresponding area
of the display.
Functions are turned on and off by to uching the buttons . The LED in
the switch illuminates when the function is turned on .
By pressing the
sa fet y swi tc h ® in the driver's door ~ page 63 the
climate controls in the rear are deactiva ted. The message
P AS SIV E
appears in the display. In this mode the rear climate control can only
be operated by the driver through the contro ls in the front compar t­
ment.
I ON /OFF] Tu rni ng o n and off
The air conditioning can be turned on and off by pressing the
I ON /OFF] button. With the ignit ion Off, the residual heat function
can be activated by pressing the button . The residual heat from the
Contro ls a nd eq uip­
ment
coolant can be used to heat the vehicle interior. The residual heat
f unction is turned off au tomatica lly after 30 minu tes .

Temperature can be adjus ted over a range from 64 °F (+ 18 °C) to 80
°F (+26 °C)

You can adjust the air circulation so that air flows from specific
vents.
• In the @setting, al l the air flows from the v ents in the center
conso le and the outlets in the door pillars.
• In the
-Or setting, air flows from the outlets under the front seats.
• In
the~ setting, air flows from ou tlets in the center console and
the door pil lars as we ll as from the outlets under the front seats .
To regulate air distribution automatical ly, swi tch to !AUTO].
~ H ea ted se ats*
In posit ion O the heating for the seats is turned off. The range of
adjustment is from 1 to 6 .
The seats can be pre -heated for about 10 minutes us ing the heating.
However , the heating is turned off if the seat sensors do not detect
the weight of an occupant during this period .
[ty) Ventil ate d seats*
The seat cushion and the seat back surfaces of the fron t seats can
be ventilated. In position
O the seat ventilation is turned off. The
range of adjustment is from 1 to 6 .

Air tempe rature, volume of air and air dis tribu tion are automatically
regulated to achieve or maintain the desired temperatures as
quickly as possible .

Starting off with a trailer To prevent rolling back unintentionally on an incline, do
the following:
- Keep the switch pulled and depress the accelerator. The
parking brake stays applied and prevents the vehicle
from rolling backward.
- You can release the switch once you are sure that you are
developing enough forward momentum at the wheels as
you depress the accelerator.
Depending on the weight of the rig (vehicle and trailer) and the
severity of the incline, you may roll backwards as you start. You can
prevent rolling backwards by holding the parking brake switch
pulled out and accelerating -just as you would when starting on a
hill with a conventional hand brake. •
Emergency braking
In the event that the conventional brake system fails or
locks.
- Pull the switch and continue to pull it to slow your vehicle
with the parking brake in an emergency.
- As soon as you release the switch or accelerate, the
braking process stops.
If you pull the switch and hold it above a speed of about 5 mph (8
km/h), the emergency braking function is initiated . The vehicle is
braked at all four wheels by activating the hydraulic brake system.
Brake performance is similar to making an emergency
stop~ &.
So that emergency braking is not activated by mistake, an audible
warning tone (buzzer) sounds when the switch is pulled . As soon as the switch is released
, or the accelerator pedal is depressed, emer­
gency braking stops.
& WARNING
Emergency braking should only be used in an emergency, when
the normal foot brake has failed or the brake pedal is obstructed .
Using the parking brake to perform emergency braking will slow
your vehicle as if you had made a full brake application. The laws
of physics cannot be suspended even with ESP and its associated
components (ABS, ASR, EDS). In corners and when road or
weather conditions are bad, a full brake application can cause the
vehicle to skid or the rear end to break away -risking an
accident. •
Driver messages in the instrument cluster
Caution: Vehicle parked too steep
This message appears when the parking brake is applied on an
incline that exceeds about 30%.
In this case the braking power of the parking brake may
not be
adequate
to prevent the vehicle from rolling unintentionally.
Please release parking brake
This message appears, when a gear is selected and the accel erator
pedal is depressed -release the parking brake.
Press brake pedal to release parking brake
This driver message appears when the switch to release the parking
brake was pressed. The parking brake can only be released if you
press the brake or accelerator pedal and press the switch at the
same time .
~ Parking brake malfunction !
This driver message appears together with the yellow 'Jlf symbol
when there is a parking brake malfunction.

The veh ic le jack mode is switched off automatica lly at speeds above
9 mph (15 km/h) .•
Towing a Trailer
Automatic lowering is not desirable when towing a trailer.

If you are going to tow a trailer, you must activate the trailer
towing mode .
Switching the trailer towing mode on and off
manually
-Pressthe(CAR] function button. The main menu
Adaptive Air Suspension appears .
-Press the I SETUP] function button. The menu Adaptive
Air Suspension
appears => fig. 212.
-Select Trailer towing mode on or off as desired.
Level Adjustment when Towing a Trailer
The following applies to veh ic les wi th Adaptive Air Suspension:

• Before hitching up the trai ler and before adjusting the tongue
weight at the trailer, the automat ic or standard mode
must be
selected, so that the vehicle is at normal leve l
~ page 188, "Setting
the Driving Modes".
• If driving in dynamic mode is desired, this mode
must be
se lected before hitching up the trailer and before adjusting the
tongue weight . However, note that your vehic le is lowered and
ground c learance is reduced.
• If you have to drive under difficult road conditions, you can
select lift mode after hitching up the trailer or after adjusting the
tongue weight .
The following applies to vehicles with
sport suspension Adaptive Air
Suspension
· Sport*:
• Before hitching up the trai ler
and before adjusting the tongue
weight at the trailer, the automatic, standard or dynamic mode
must
be selected, so that the vehic le is at normal level~ page 188,
"Setting the Driving Modes".
• If you have to drive under difficult road conditions, you can
select lift mode after hitching up the trailer or after adjusting the
tongue weight .
Restrictions when Operating with a Trailer
When operating with a trailer, the lift mode can on ly be se lected up
to about 25 mph (40 km/h). The system automatical ly goes out of lift
mode when speed exceeds about 31 mph (50 km/h).
I f the vehic le is in automatic, standard or lift mode before the trai ler
towing mode is activated, the dynamic mode cannot be activated ·
except on vehicles with
sport suspension Adaptive Air Suspension -
Sport*.
If the vehic le is in dynamic mode before towing operation is acti·
vated, it can be driven in this mode. If the suspension is shifted from
this mode to automatic mode, dynamic mode cannot be
re-selected .~

& WARNING
Improperly stored luggage or other items can fly through the
vehicle causing serious personal injury in the event of hard braking
or an accident. To help reduce the risk of serious personal injury:
• Always put objects, for example, luggage or other heavy items
in the luggage compartment.
• Always secure objects in the luggage compartment using the
tie-down hooks and suitable straps.
& WARNING
Heavy loads will influence the way your vehicle handles. To help
reduce the risk of a loss of control leading to serious personal
injury :
• Always keep in mind when transporting heavy objects, that a
change in the center of gravity can also cause changes in vehicle
handling:
-Always distribute the load as evenly as possible.
- Place heavy objects as far forward in the luggage compart-
ment as possible.
• Never exceed the Gross Axle Weight Rating or the Gross
Vehicle Weight Rating specified on the safety compliance sticker on the left door jamb. Exceeding permissible weight standards
can cause the vehicle to slide and handle differently.
• Please observe information on safe
driving => page 198.
& WARNING
To help prevent poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the
vehicle, always keep the rear lid closed while driving.
• Never transport objects larger than those fitting completely
into the luggage area because the rear lid cannot be fully closed.

• If you absolutely must drive with the rear lid open, observe the
following notes to reduce the risk of poisoning :
- Close all windows,
- Close the power roof,
- Open all air outlets in the instrument panel,
- Switch off the air recirculation,
- Set the fresh air fan to the highest speed.
& WARNING
Always make sure that the doors, all windows, the power roof and
the rear lid are securely closed and locked to reduce the risk of injury when the vehicle is not being used.
• After closing the rear lid, always make sure that it is properly
closed and locked.
• Never leave your vehicle unattended especially with the rear lid
left open. A child could crawl into the vehicle through the luggage
compartment and close the rear lid becoming trapped and unable
to get out . Being trapped in a vehicle can lead to serious personal
injury.
• Never let children play in or around the vehicle.
• Never let passengers ride in the luggage compartment. Vehicle
occupants must always be properly restrained in one of the
vehicle's seating positions.
[ i] Tips
Air circulation helps to reduce windowfogging. Stale air escapes to
the outside through vents in the trim panel, on the left side of the
luggage compartment. Be sure to keep these slots free and open. •

Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equipped with four tie­
downs to secure luggage and other items.
Use the tie -downs to secure your cargo properly => page 205,
"Loading the luggage compartment".
In a collision, the laws of physics mean that even smaller items that
are loose in the vehicle will become heavy missiles that can cause
serious injury. Items in the vehicle possess energy which vary with
vehicle speed and the weight of the item. Vehicle speed is the most
significant factor.
For example, in a frontal collision at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/h),
the forces acting on a 10-lb (4.5 kg) object are about 20 times the
normal weight of the item. This means that the weight of the item
would suddenly be about 200 lbs. (90 kg). You can imagine the inju­ ries that a 200 lbs. (90 kg) item flying freely through the passenger
compartment could cause in a collision like this.
& WARNING
Weak, damaged or improper straps used to secure items to tie­
downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
serious personal injury.
• Always use suitable mounting straps and properly secure
items to the tie-downs in the luggage compartment to help
prevent items from shifting or flying forward as dangerous
missiles. •

Child restraints on the front seat - some important things to know
- Be sure to read the important information and head the WARNINGS for important details about c hildren and
Advanced
Airbags=> page 243.
Even though your vehic le is equipped with an Advanced Airbag
System, make certain that a ll children, especia lly those 12 years and
younger, a lways ride in the back seat proper ly restrained for their
age and size . The airbag on the passenger side makes the front seat
a potentia lly dangerous place for a child to ride. The front seat is not
the safest p lace for a child in a forward -facing chi ld seat. It can be a
very dangerous place for an infant or a child in a rearward -fac ing
seat.
The Advanced Ai rbag System in your vehicle has been certified to
comply with the Requirements of United States Federal Motor
Vehicle Safety Standard 208 as applicable at the time your vehicle
was manufactured.
The Standard requires the front airbag on the passenger side to be
t urned off ("suppressed") if a chi ld up to about one year of age
restrained in one of the rear -facing or forward -facing infant
restraints l isted in Federa l Motor Vehic le Safety Standard 208 with
which the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle was certified has
been insta lled on the front passenger seat. For a listing of the child
restraints that were used to certify compl iance with the US Safety
Standard
=> page 245.
The PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF l ight in the instrument pane l te lls you
when the front Advanced Airbag on the passenger side has been
t urned off by the electronic co ntrol unit.
Each time you turn on the ignition, the
PA SS ENGER AIR BAG OFF
light will come on for a few seconds and :
• will stay on if the front passenger seat is not occup ied, •
will stay on if there is a small child or chi ld restraint on the front
passenge r seat,
• will go off if the front passenger seat is occupied by an adult as
r egis tered by the weight-sensi ng
m at => page 229, "Monitoring the
Advanced Airbag System" .
The
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light comes on when the contro l unit
detects a tota l weight on the front passenger seat that requires the
front airbag to be turned off.
I f the to tal weight on the front passe nger seat is m ore than tha t of
a typ ica l 1 year -old child but less than the weight of a small adult,
t he fron t airbag on the passe nger side can dep loy (the
PAS SENGER
AIR BAG OFF
light does not come on). If the PASSEN GER AIR BAG
OFF
light does not come on, the front airbag on t he passe nger s ide
has not been turned off by the electronic contro l unit and can
deploy if the control unit senses an impact t hat meets the condi­
tions stored in its memory.
For example , the airb ag m ay deploy if :
• a small ch ild that is heavier tha n a typ ical 1 yea r-o ld child is on
the front passenger seat (regardless of whether the child is in one
of the child seats
l isted => page 245), or
• a child who has outgrown chi ld restraints is on the front
p asse nger seat.
I f the front passe nger airbag is turned o ff, the
PASSENGER AIR BAG
OFF
light comes on in the instrument cluster and stays on.

not deploy (the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF l ight does not illuminate and stay lit) even
if a smal l adult or teenage r, o r a passenger wh o is n ot sitting uprigh t
with their back against a non -reclined backrest with their feet on the
vehic le floor in front of the seat is o n the front passenge r seat
=> page 200, "Proper seating pos it ion for the driver".
I f the front passenger airbag deploys, the Federa l Standard requires
the airbag to meet the "low risk" deployment cr iteria to reduce the
risk of injury through interaction with the airbag. "Low risk" deploy­
ment occu rs in those crashes that take place at lower decelerations

• Improper in stallation of child restraints can reduce their effec­
tiveness or even prevent them from p roviding any protection .
• An improperly installed child restraint can interfere with the
airbag as it deploys and seriously injure or even kill the child -
even with an Advanced Airbag System .
• Always carefully follow the manufa cturer's instruction s
provided with the child seat or carrier .
• Never pl ace additional items on the seat that can in crease the
total weight registered by the weight -sensing mat and can cause
injury in a crash . •

Y our vehicle is equipped with an "Advanced Airbag System" in
complia nce with United States Federal M otor Vehicle Sa fe ty Sta n­
dard (FMVSS) 2 08 as applicable at t he time your vehicle was manu ­
f actured. The safe ty bel ts for the front seat s have "pretensione rs"

• Airbag work most effectively when used with properly worn
safety belts.
• Therefore, always wear your safety belts and make sure that
everybody in your vehicle is properly restrained.

A person on the front passenger seat, especially infants and small
children, will receive serious injuries and can even be killed by
being too close to the airbag when it inflates.
• Although the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle is
designed to turn off the front passenger airbag if an infant or a
small child is on the front passenger seat, nobody can absolutely
guarantee that deployment under these special conditions is
impossible in all conceivable situations that may happen during
the useful life of your vehicle.
• The Advanced Airbag System can deploy in accordance with
the
"low risk" option under the U.S. Federal Standard if a child that
is heavier than the typical one-year old child is on the front
passenger seat and the other conditions for airbag deployment
are met.
• Accident statistics have shown that children are generally safer
in the rear seat area than in the front seating position.
• For their own safety, all children, especially 12 years and
younger, should always ride in the back properly restrained for
their age and size. •
Advanced front airbag system
Your vehicle is equipped with a front Advanced Airbag System in
compliance with United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Stan ­
dard 208 as applicable at the time your vehicle was manufactured.
Controls and equip­ ment Safety first Vehicle operation
The
front Advanced Airbag System supplements the safety belts to
provide additional protection for the driver's and front passenger's
heads and upper bodies in frontal crashes . The airbags inflate only
in frontal impacts when the vehicle deceleration is high enough.
The front Advanced Airbag System for the front seat occupants is
not a substitute for your safety belts . Rather, it is part of the overall
occupant restraint system in your vehicle. Always remember that
the airbag system can only help to protect you, if you are sitting
upright, wearing your safety belt and wearing it properly. This is why
you and your passengers must always be properly restrained, not
just because the law requires you to be.
The Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle has been certified to
meet the "low risk" requirements for 3 and 6 year -old children on the
passenger side and very small adults on the driver side. The low risk
deployment criteria are intended to help reduce the risk of injury
through interaction with the front airbag that can occur, for
example, by being too close to the steering wheel and instrument
panel when the airbag inflates.
In addition, the system has been certified to comply with the
"suppression" requirements of the Safety Standard, to turn off the
front airbag for infants 12 months old and younger who are
restrained on the front passenger seat in child restraints that are
listed in the
Standard=> page 245, "Child restraints and Advanced
Airbags".
"Suppression" requires the front airbag on the passenger side to be
turned off if:
• a child up to about one year of age is restrained on the front
passenger seat in one of the rear-facing or forward-facing infant
restraints listed in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208 with
which the Advanced Airbag System in your vehicle was certified. For
a listing of the child restraints that were used to certify your
vehicle's compliance with the US Safety
Standard => page 245,
• weight less than a threshold level stored in the control unit is
detected on the front passenger seat.
