=:> page 170, fig. 192 to deact ivate the Audi parking
system. The indicator light in the switch goes out.
You have to turn on the acoustic parking assist manuall y if you wish
to park the vehicle forwards or if you wish to approach an obstacle
forwards and want a distance warning .
The range at whic h the sensors start to measure is about:

Dis tance wa rn ing is given by chimes which are generated by a
signal generator . The volume and the pitch of the chimes can be
adjusted in the MM I
=> page 180.
Mute
I n t he case of vehic les with automatic transmission, an acoustic
distance warning is discontinued when the transmission selector
Controls and equip ment lever is moved to the P position
. However, the system remains
active . As soon as the selector lever is moved fro m the

and the vehicle approaches an obstacle, the acoustic distance
warning resumes.
Dr iving fo rw ard /b ac kw ard
Dista nce warn ing w hen driving fo rward/ backward is based on
detection of an obstac le in the range of the parking assist. As the
distance decreases, t he time interval betwee n the aud ible t ones
becomes shorter.
When the distance is less than approx .
1 ft (0.30 m), the tone
becomes cont inuous. At th is po int you shou ld stop backing up or
driving forward .
I f the distance to an obstacle re m ains the same, the vo lume of the
distance warning is gradua lly reduced after about
4 seconds (does
not app ly to the zone for the continuous tone). If you start to
approach the detected obstacle again, the distance warning will
sound at the norma l volume again.
P arking
When you se lect another gear when park ing (e .g . reverse/forwa rd),
the warning tones are temporarily suppressed, but the visua l
display remains on the MMI display . If you start approaching a
detected obstac le again, the distance warning wi ll sound at the
normal volume again .
Vi su a l displa y
The segments on t he MMI d isp lay indicate a change in the distance
between the vehicle and an obstacle . The number of segments
displayed depends on the obstac les in front of or behind the
vehic le. The c loser the vehic le comes to the obstacle, the closer t he
segments approach the
vehic le => page 170, fig. 193. When the

& WARNING
• Sensors have dead spaces in which objects cannot be
detected. Be especially careful to check for small children and
animals before backing up . Small children and animals will not
always be detected by the sensors.
• The Audi parking system is not a substitute for being careful
and alert when backing up. Be especially careful during parking
and similar maneuvers . Always watch where you are driving and
make sure that nothing is in the way.
• Remember that low obstacles which have already been
signaled may pass below the system's sensing zone when the
vehicle is backing up. The fact that the signal stops does not mean
that you have cleared the obstacle. When the signal stops, impact
is imminent. Objects such as trailer hitches, chains, narrow posts
or fences covered by a thin layer of paint may not always be
detected by the system. They can still damage your vehicle
without warning.
• Always make sure that the volume and frequency of the chimes
is adjusted so that you can easily hear the acoustic distance signal
even if the radio is playing, the air-conditioner blower is on High or
there is a high level of outside noise.
- Check the settings whenever someone else has driven the
vehicle before you.
• Improper reliance on the Audi parking system can cause colli
sions and serious personal injury.
- Never rely only on parking assist when backing up.
- Always check rear view mirrors to make sure it is safe to back
up.
[ i] Tips
• The rear-view camera picture is available as soon as the MMI

Rear-view camera tips
We recommend that you pract ice parking with t he rear -v iew ca mera
in a traffic-free location, or parking
lot, to become familiar with the
system, the orien tation lines, and their fu nction . When do ing th is,
there should be good light and weather conditions .
I n the MMI Disp lay, objects or vehicles appear closer or further away
if:
• you are driving in reverse gear from a level surface onto an
inc lin e, or a downward slope,
• you are dr iving in reverse gear toward protruding objects,
• the vehicle is carrying too much load in the rear .
The accuracy of the orientation lines and b lue surfaces diminishes
if :
• the Adaptive Air Suspension is defec tive, or the dynamic or lift
mode is switched on,
• the rear -view camera does not provide a re liable image, for
examp le, in poor vis ibility conditions or if the lens is dirty,
• the image on the screen is not visib le due to sun glare and reflec
t ion.
Caring for the re ar-v iew c amer a len s:
• Dampen the lens with a household a lcoho l- based g lass c leaner,
and c lean the lens with a dry cloth.
• Remove snow with a hand brush.
• Remove ice, preferably with de -icing
spray=> 0.

Servotronic® - advanced power
steering system
The power steering systems uses the power of the
running engine to allow precise s teering with little effor t.
The advanced Servotronic® power steering system senses the road
speed and electronically adjusts power assistance to provide
comfortab le and safe steer ing response exactly matched to the
vehic le speed.
Power s teeri ng will not work if the engine is off . As a result, the
steering whee l wil l be hard to turn .
The power steering fluid level is checked during the scheduled
maintenance serv ices.
0 Note
If there is an electron ic ma lfunction, servotronic will sti ll funct ion
like a conventiona l power steering system, providing a constant
steer ing suppor t force that is no longer proportionate to the vehicle
speed . This is most noticeable when turning the steering wheel at
low speeds (for examp le w hen parking), -more effor t wi ll be
required than usual.
• Be aware of the different than usua l steering response and
adjust your steering force accordingly .
• Have the problem checked and set right by an Aud i dea ler as
soon as possib le.
Controls and equip ment Safety first Vehicle operation
[
i ] Tip s
• When the engine is running, never hold the steer ing whee l
turned all the way to the right or to the left for longer than 15
seconds. The power steer ing pu mp wil l overheat the hydraul ic fluid
if you keep ho lding the steering whee l turned a ll the way. This is
like ly to damage the power steering system.
• I f the power steering system shou ld fail entire ly, or if the engine
is not runn ing ( for examp le, wh ile be ing towed), you w ill st ill be able
to steer the vehicle . However, considerably more effort will be
requ ired to do so.
• I f the power steering system shou ld have a leak, or is not func
tioning properly, contact your author ized Audi dealer im mediately.
• The power stee ring system requires a special ly formulated
hydrau lic fluid . The power steer ing reservo ir is the one located most
forward on the left side of the engine
compartment => page 308. The
correct flu id level in the reservo ir is important for proper func
tioning of the power steering. •
Driving with your quattro®
With All Wheel Drive, all four wheels are driven.
Genera l inf orm ati on
With All Whee l Drive, power is d istributed to all fo ur wheels. This
happens automatically depending on your driving style and the
road condi tions at the time . See
a lso => page 269, "Electronic differ
entia l lock ! EDU" .
Winter tires
When driving in the winter, your vehicle with All Wheel Drive has an
advantage, even with regular tires . In winter road conditions it may
be advisable to mount winter tires (or all-season tires) for improved
driveabi lity and braking: these ti res must be mounted on all four
wheel s. See
also=> page 341, "Winter tires". ~
