Eve ry safety belt is equipped with an automatic belt retractor on the
shou lder belt. This feature locks the belt when the belt is pulled out
fast, during hard braking and in an accident . T he belt may also lock
when you drive up or down a steep hill or through a sharp curve .
During normal driving the belt lets you move free ly.
S afety belt pretensi oners
The safety belts are equipped with a belt pretensioner that helps to
tighten the safety belt and remove slack when the prete nsioner is
activat ed . The function of the pretension er is monitored by a
warning light=>

Switchable locking feature
Every safety belt except the one on the d river seat is equipped with
a switchable locking feature that
must be used when the safety belt

• A sensor in the safety belt latch for the driver and fo r the front

and transmits this information to the el ectron ic control unit .

Damage to the front passenger seat can prevent the front airbag
from working properly .
• Improper repair or disassembly of the front passenger and
driver seat will prevent the Advanced Airbag System from func ­
tioning properly .
• Repairs to the front passenger seat must be performed by qual­
ified and properly trained workshop personnel.
• Never remove the front passenger or driver seat from the
vehicle.
• Never remove the upholstery from the front passenger seat .
• Never disassemble or remove parts from the seat or disconnect
wires from it .
• Never carry sharp objects in your pockets or place them on the
seat .
If the weight-sensing mat in the passenger seat is punctured
it cannot work properly.
• Never carry things on your lap or carry objects on the
passenger seat. Such items can increase the weight registered by
the weight-sens ing mat and send the wrong information to the
airbag control unit .
• Never store items under the front passenger seat . Parts of the
Advanced Airbag System under the passenger seat could be damaged , preventing them and the airbag system from working
properly.
• Never place seat covers or replacement upholstery that have
not been specifically approved by Audi on the front seats.

• Seat covers can prevent the Advanced Airbag System from
recognizing child restraints or occupants on the front passenger
seat and prevent the side airbag in the seat backrest from
deploying properly .
• Never use cushions, pillows, blankets or similar items on the
front passenger seat . The additional padding will prevent the
weight-sensing mat in the seat from accurately registering the
child restraint or person on the seat and prevent the Advanced
Airbag System from functioning properly.
• If you must use a child restraint on the front passenger seat
and the child restraint manufacturer's instructions require the use
of a towel , foam cushion or something else to properly position
the child restraint, make certain that the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF
light comes on and stays on whenever the child restraint is
i nstalled on the front passenger seat .
• If the PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF light does not come on and stay
on, immediately install child restraint in a rear seating position
and have the airbag system inspected by your Audi dealer. •
How the Advanced Airbag System
components work together
T he front Advanced Airbag System and the si de airba gs supplement
t h e protection offered by the fro nt three -point safety be lt s with
pretensioners and load limiters a nd t he adjustab le head restraints
to help reduce the risk of in jury in a wide range of accident and
cras h situati ons. Be s ure to read the im por tant i nformation about
safety and heed the WAR NINGS in this chapter.
Depl oyment of the Adva nced A irbag Sy stem and the acti vat ion of
th e safety be lt pr etensioners dep ends on the decele ration
m easu re d by the crash se nso rs and regi stered by the e lec troni c
control unit . Crash s eve rity depends on speed and dec eleration as

the weight -sensing mat to measure more weight than is actually on
the seat .
If th e PA SSENGER AIR BAG OFF light still d oes not come on and does
not stay on continuously (when the ignition is switched on),
• t ake the child restraint off the front passenger seat and install it
properly at one of the rear seat positions. Have the airbag system
inspected by your Audi dealer immediately.
• move the child to a rear seat position and make sure that the
child is proper ly restrained in a child restraint that is appropria te for
its size and age .
The
P AS SENGER AIR BAG OFF light shou ld NOT come on when the
ignition is on and an adult is sitting in a proper seating posi tion on
the front passenger seat . If the
PASSENGER AIR BAG OF F light
comes on and stays on or flashes for about 5 seconds whi le driving,
under these circumstances, make sure that :
• the adu lt on the front passenger seat is properly seated on the
center of the seat cushion w ith his or her back up against the back­
res t and the backrest is not reclined => page 794, "Proper occupant
sea ting positions" ,
• the adult is not taking weight of f the sea t by holding on to the
passenger assist handle above the front passenger door or
supporting thei r we ight on the armrest,
• the safety belt is being proper ly worn and that there is not a lot
of slack in the safety belt webbing,
• accessory seat covers or cushions or other things that may cause
an incorrect reading or impression on the weight -sensing mat
under the upho lstery of the seat have been removed from the front
passenger sea t,
• a safety belt extender has not been left in the safety be lt latch for
t he front passenger seat .

Important safety instructions on monitoring
the Advanced Airbag System
& WARNING
An airbag sy stem that is not functioning properly cannot provide
supplemental protection in a front al cra sh .
• If the airb ag ind icator li ght come s on , it me ans that there may
be something wrong with the Advanced Ai rbag S ystem. It is
po ssible that the airbag will inflate when it is not suppo sed to , or
w ill not infl ate w hen it should .
• Have the airb ag system inspe cted immediatel y by you r Audi
dealer.
& WARNING
If the front airb ag infl ate s, a child without a child re straint , in a
rear ward -fa cing child safet y se at or i n a forwa rd-fa cing child
r e str aint that has not been properly installed will be seriously
inj ured and can be killed .
• Even though your vehicle i s equipped with an Adv anced Airbag

- Push down on the seat cushion so t hat the lower anchor ­
ages are v isib le.
- Hold t he guidance fixt ure with the part number facing
downward and push it in the direction of the arrow on to
the anchorage => page

- Make sure that each of the two guidance fixtures per seat
snaps into place.
Removing the guidance fixtures
- Remove the child restrai nt according the c hild restraint
m an ufacturer's instr uctions.
- Pu sh down on the seat cushion so t hat the lower anchor ­
ages are v isible.
- Pu ll off the gu idance fixtures from the lowe r anc horages.
- Always remove the guidance fixt ure s an d keep them in a
safe p lace when not in use.
You may find it easier to insta ll chi ld restraints equipped with hooks
attached to straps without the guidance fixtures in place. If this is
the case, remove the guidance fixtures by pu lling them off the
anchorages . However, the guidance fix tures can he lp you to locate
the
LATCH anchorages.

• Remove the guidance fixtures before folding the rear seatback to
prevent damaging the seat cushion.
• I f you leave the guidance fixtures insta lled for several days, they
cou ld leave a mark on the upholstery on the seat cushion and back ­
rest in the area that the guidance fi xtures were insta lled . The uphol ­
stery would also be permanently stretched around the guidance
fixtures. This applies especially to leather seats.

Care of interior
MMI display
-Clean th e MMI display with a soft c lean cloth and an LCD
cl eane r.
The MM I disp lay can be cleaned with a professional ly available "LCD
cleaner". The cloth should be s lightly dampened with the c leaning
fluid to clean the display.

T o avoid scra tching the MMI display, you should never c lean it dry .•
MMI terminal
- First clean the MMI terminal with a brush to remove dust
from the housing.
- T hen wipe the MMI terminal wit h a clea n, soft, s lig htly
damp cloth .
The MMI terminal shou ld be c leaned with a brush first so that no
dirt is trapped between the buttons and the housing. We recom­
mend giving the MM I terminal a final wipe with a c loth moistened
with water and dish washing dete rgent.

To prevent damage, make sure that no flu id ever gets into the M MI
terminal. •
Aluminum trim
Use only neutral-pH products to remove spots and deposits from
a lum inum surfaces . C hro me care products an d alka line cleaners
wi ll attack aluminum surfaces and can damage them over time.

Fabrics and fabric coverings
Fabrics and fabric coverings (e.g . seats, door trim panels, etc.l
shou ld be c leaned at regular intervals with a vacuum cleaner . This
re moves surface dirt partic les which could become embedded in
the fabric through use. Steam cleaners shou ld not be used, because
t he steam tends to push the d irt deeper into the fabric and lock it
there.
Normal cl eaning
Genera lly, we recommend using a soft sponge or a lint -free
microf iber c loth to the clean fabric . Brushes should on ly be used for
carpets and floor mats, since other fabric surfaces could be harmed
by brushes.
Norma l surface stains can be cleaned using a commercially avail ­
able foam cleaner. Spread the foam on the surface of the fabric with
a soft sponge and work it in gent ly. Do not saturate the fabric . Then
pat the foam dry using absorbent, d ry cloths (e.g. microfiber cloth)
and vacuum it a fter it has dried completely .
Cleaning stains
Stains caused by beverages (e.g. coffee, fruit juice, etc.) can be
treated with a mild detergent so lution . Apply the detergent so lution
with a sponge. In the case of stubborn stains, a detergent paste can be applied direct ly to the stain and worked into the fabric. After -.,.

consider if children, anima ls or other factors m ight prove to be
partic ularly hard on the leather.
By contrast, leather types that are covered by a colored finish layer
are more durable. This has a positive effect on the leather 's resis ­
tance to wear and soiling in da ily use. On the ot her hand, the typica l
characteristics of natural leather are barely or not apparent.
However, this does not mean that the leather itself is of inferior
quality .
Care and h andling
Because of the exclusive nature of the types of leather that Audi
uses and their unique properties (such as sensitivity to oils, grease,
soiling, etc.l, you will need to be somewhat careful with these
lea thers, and a cer tain type of care is requ ired . For example, dark
clothing materials can discolor leather seats (especial ly if such
clothing is damp and was not dyed correctly). Dust and dirt par ticles
in pores , folds, and seams can have an abrasive effect and can
damage the leather surface as well as weaken seams .
The leather shou ld be c leaned regularly as needed . After having
been used for a relatively long time , your leather seats will acquire
a rich aged finish . This is a characteristic of natural leather and a
sign of true qua lity.
I n order to maintain the value of this natural p roduc t over the life of
your vehic le, you should fo llow the recommendations below :

• To keep your leather from b leaching out, do not allow it to be
exposed to bright sun light for long per iods of time . If you have to
leave the vehicle parked outside for long periods, cover the leather
to protect it from direct exposure to sunlight.
• Sharp ob jects on c lothing, such as zippers, rivets or sharp pieces
on belts can leave permanent scratches or sc rape marks on the
surface of t he leather.

• After each time you clean the leathe r and at regular intervals, use
a leather preservative creme that contains UV -blockers and that
works into the leather . This creme wil l nour ish and moisturize the
leather, helping it to breathe and stay supple . It a lso helps to build
up a protect ive coating on the sur face .
• Clean the leather every 2 -3 months, and c lean any areas that get
soiled.
• Remove fresh marks made by ballpoint pens, ink, lipstick, shoe
polish, etc . as soon as possible .
• Preserve the co lor of the leather as needed by using a special
colored leather care creme to touch up areas of uneven co lor. •

More stubborn dirt
- More stub born dirt can be removed using a cloth satu­
rated wi th a mild soap solut io n (2 tab lespoons mild
liq uid soap) .
- Neve r allow the soap solution to sa turate the leathe r, and
make certain that no water soaks i nto the seams .
