Octane rating
Volvo engines are designed to achieve rated horsepower, torque, and fuel\
economy performance using premium 91 octane
fuel. Volvo recommends premium for best performance, but using 87 octane\
or above will not affect engine reliability.
In demanding driving conditions, such as operating the vehicle in hot we\
ather, towing a trailer, or driving for extended
periods at higher altitudes than normal, it may be advisable to switch t\
o higher octane fuel (91 or higher) or to change
gasoline brands to fully utilize your engine's capacity, and for the smo\
othest possible operation.
NOTE: When switching to higher octane fuel or changing gasoline brands, it ma\
y be necessary to fill the tank more than
once before a difference in engine operation is noticeable.
Fuel Formulations
Do not use gasoline that contains lead as a knock inhibitor, and do not \
use lead additives. Besides damaging the exhaust
emission control systems on your vehicle, lead has been strongly linked \
to certain forms of cancer.
Many fuels contain benzene as a solvent. Unburned benzene has been stron\
gly linked to certain forms of cancer. If you
live in an area where you must fill your own gas tank, take precautions.\
These may include:
l standing upwind away from the filler nozzle while refueling
l refueling only at gas stations with vapor recovery systems that fully se\
al the mouth of the filler neck during refueling
l wearing neoprene gloves while handling a fuel filler nozzle.
Use of Additives
With the exception of gas line antifreeze during winter months, do not a\
dd solvents, thickeners, or other store-bought
additives to your vehicle's fuel, cooling, or lubricating systems. Overu\
se may damage your engine, and some of these
additives contain organically volatile chemicals. Do not needlessly expo\
se yourself to these chemicals.

Positioning the load carriers
Make sure that the wing-shaped load carriers are installed on the roof r\
ails with the rounded edge forward (see the inset
illustration above). The load carriers are identical and can be placed \
anywhere along the roof rails.
When not in use, we recommend that the front load carrier be placed appr\
oximately 2 inches (5 cm) in front of the center
roof rail anchorage point and the rear load carrier approximately 1.5 in\
ches (3.5 cm) in front of the rear rail anchorage.
This will help to reduce wind noise.
NOTE: Volvo accessories mounted on these load carriers will require T-track m\
ounting hardware for correct installation.
Please consult your Volvo retailer.
Installing the load carriers
Make sure that the load carrier is pressed firmly out against the roof r\
ail. Screw the load carrier in place. Use the supplied
torque wrench and tighten to the mark on the wrench (corresponding to 6\
Nm). See illustration.
WARNING!
Loads carried on the vehicle's roof should not exceed 220 lbs (100 kg)\
, including the weight of the load carriers and any
other load carrying equipment (ski boxes, bicycle racks, etc.). Excess\
ive loads on the roof can adversely affect the
handling and roadholding characteristics of the vehicle.

The undersides of accessory running boards are not intended for attachin\
g the
jack.
Changing a wheel
- Park the vehicle on a firm, level, non-slippery surface.
- Engage the parking brake and put the gear selector in the Park positio\
n.
- Loosen the wheel bolts by exerting downward pressure on the lug wrench\
.
- Remove the wheel cap (where applicable) using the lug wrench in the \
tool bag.
pg. 169 Wheels and tires
Changing wheels
- With the wheels still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen the \
wheel bolts 1/2 - 1 turn. Turn the
bolts counterclockwise to loosen the bolts.
CAUTION!
- The vehicle must not be driven with wheels of different dimensions or \
with a spare tire other than
the one that came with the vehicle. The use of different size wheels can\
seriously damage your
vehicle's transmission.
- Correct tightening torque on wheel bolts must be observed.
- The wheel bolts should never be greased or lubricated.
- Extended, chromed wheel bolts must not be used with steel rims, as the\
y make it impossible to fit
the hub caps.

Charge air cooler (Intercooler)
Turbocharged engines employ a turbocompressor to force air into the engi\
ne inlet manifold and a charge
air cooler to cool the compressed inlet air. The resulting increase in a\
ir flow raises pressure in the intake
manifold and increases engine power over that developed by the normally-\
aspirated engine. The charge
air cooler (which resembles a radiator) is located between the turbo-c\
ompressor and inlet manifold.
Fuel system
The engine is equipped with a multiport fuel injection system.
