Volvo and the environment
Volvo is committed to the well being of its customers. As a natural part\
of this commitment, we care
about the environment in which we all live. Caring for the environment m\
eans an everyday involvement
in reducing our environmental impact.
Volvo's environmental activities are based on a holistic view, which mea\
ns we consider the overall
environmental impact of a product throughout its complete life cycle. In\
this context, design, production,
product use, and recycling are all important considerations.
In production, Volvo has partly or completely phased out several chemica\
ls including chloro-
fluorocarbons (CFCs), freons, lead chromates, naphtanates, asbestos, m\
ercury and cadmium; and reduced
the amount of chemicals used in our plants 50% since 1991.
Volvo was the first in the world to introduce into production a three-wa\
y catalytic converter with a heated
oxygen sensor in 1976. The current version of this highly efficient syst\
em reduces emissions of harmful
substances (CO, HC, NOx) from the exhaust pipe by approximately 95% an\
d the search to eliminate the
remaining emissions continues. Volvo is the only automobile manufacturer\
to offer CFC-free retrofit kits
for the air conditioning system of all models as far back as the 1975 Vo\
lvo 240. Advanced electronic
engine controls, refined purification systems and cleaner fuels are brin\
ging us closer to our goal.
After Volvo vehicles and parts have fulfilled their use, recycling is th\
e next critical step in completing the
life cycle. The metal content is about 75% of the total weight of a vehi\
cle, which makes the vehicle
among the most recycled industrial products. In order to have efficient \
and well controlled recycling,
many Volvo variants have printed dismantling manuals, indicating the wei\
ght and material of individual
components. For Volvo, all homogeneous plastic parts weighing more than \
1.7 oz. (50 grams) are marked
with international symbols that indicate how the component is to be sort\
ed for recycling.
In addition to continuous environmental refinement of conventional gasol\
ine-powered internal
combustion engines, Volvo is actively looking at advanced technology alt\
ernative-fuel vehicles.
When you drive a Volvo, you become our partner in the work to lessen the\
vehicle's impact on the
environment.
To reduce your vehicle's environmental impact, you can:
l Maintain proper air pressure in your tires. Tests have shown decreased f\
uel economy with improperly
inflated tires.
l Follow the recommended maintenance schedule in your Warranty and Service\
Records Information
booklet.

Fuel requirements
Octane rating
Volvo engines are designed for optimum performance on unleaded premium g\
asoline with an AKI octane rating of 91 or
above. AKI (ANTI KNOCK INDEX) is an average of the Research Octane Num\
ber, RON, and the Motor Octane Number,
MON. ((RON + MON)/2). The minimum octane requirement is AKI 87 (RON\
91).
Deposit control gasoline (detergent additives)
Volvo recommends the use of detergent gasoline to control engine deposit\
s. Detergent gasoline is effective in keeping
injectors and intake valves clean. Consistent use of deposit control gas\
olines will help ensure good drivability and fuel
economy. If you are not sure whether the gasoline contains deposit contr\
ol additives, check with the service station
operator.
NOTE: Volvo does not recommend the use of external fuel injector cleaning sys\
tems.
Unleaded fuel
Each Volvo has a three-way catalytic converter and must use only unleade\
d gasoline. U.S. and Canadian regulations
require that pumps delivering unleaded gasoline be labelled "UNLEADED". \
Only these pumps have nozzles which fit
your vehicle's filler inlet. It is unlawful to dispense leaded fuel into\
a vehicle labelled "unleaded gasoline only". Leaded
gasoline damages the three-way catalytic converter and the heated oxygen\
sensor system. Repeated use of leaded gasoline
will lessen the effectiveness of the emission control system and could r\
esult in loss of emission warranty coverage. State
and local vehicle inspection programs will make detection of misfueling \
easier, possibly resulting in emission test failure
for misfueled vehicles.
NOTE: Some U.S. and Canadian gasolines contain an octane enhancing additive c\
alled methyl-cyclopentadienyl
manganese tricarbonyl (MMT). If such fuels are used, your Emission Con\
trol System performance may be affected, and
the Check Engine Light (malfunction indicator lamp) located on your in\
strument panel may light. If this occurs, please
return your vehicle to an authorized Volvo retailer for maintenance.
Gasoline containing alcohol and ethers "Oxygenated fuels"
Some fuel suppliers sell gasoline containing "oxygenates" which are usua\
lly alcohols or ethers. In some areas, state or
local laws require that the service pump be marked indicating use of alc\
ohols or ethers. However, there are areas in which
the pumps are unmarked. If you are not sure whether there is alcohol or \
ethers in the gasoline you buy, check with the
service station operator. To meet seasonal air quality standards, some a\
reas require the use of "oxygenated" fuel.
Volvo allows the use of the following "oxygenated" fuels; however, the o\
ctane ratings listed on this page must still be met.
Alcohol - Ethanol: Fuels containing up to 10% ethanol by volume may be u\
sed. Ethanol may also be referred to as Ethyl
alcohol, or "Gasohol".
Ethers - MTBE: Fuels containing up to 15% MTBE may be used.

Difficult driving conditions
Driving on rough/unpaved surfaces
The Volvo XC90 is designed primarily for on-road driving, and it has exc\
ellent handling characteristics on very rough or
unpaved roads.
When driving on poorly maintained or unpaved roads, please keep the foll\
owing in mind:
l Reduce speed on rough surfaces to minimize possible damage to the vehicl\
e's underbody.
l When driving on soft surfaces such as dry sand or snow, try to avoid sto\
pping if at all possible.
WARNING!
Avoid driving diagonally across steep inclines as this could increase th\
e risk of a roll-over. Try to drive straight up or
down the slope.
If the road is very steep, avoid turning the vehicle around to help avoi\
d the risk of rolling over. Back the vehicle up or
down the incline instead.
NOTE: Avoid driving on steep inclines if the fuel tank is nearly empty. If th\
e flow of fuel to the engine is interrupted due
to the vehicle's angle of inclination, this could result in damage to th\
e three-way catalytic converter. We recommend
keeping the fuel tank at least half full when driving on steep inclines.\
Driving through water
The vehicle can be driven through water up to a depth of approximately 1\
8 inches (48 cm), at a maximum speed of 6 mph
(10 km/h).
Take particular care when driving through flowing water.
Clean the electrical connections for trailer wiring after driving in mud\
or water.
When driving through water, maintain low speed and do not stop in the wa\
ter.
WARNING!
After driving through water, press lightly on the brake pedal to ensure \
that the brakes are functioning normally. Water
or mud can make the brake linings slippery, resulting in delayed braking\
effect.
CAUTION!
l Engine damage will occur if water is drawn into the air cleaner.
l If the vehicle is driven through water deeper than 18 in (48 cm), wate\
r may enter the differential and the
transmission. This reduces the oil's lubricating capacity and may shorte\
n the service life of these components.
l Do not allow the vehicle to stand in water up to the door sills longer t\
han absolutely necessary. This could result in
electrical malfunctions.
l If the engine has been stopped while the car is in water, do not attempt\
to restart the engine. Have the car towed out
of the water.

Emergency towing
The towing eyelet is located in the tool bag, under the floor of the car\
go area. This eyelet must be screwed into the
positions provided on the right sides of either the front or rear bumper\
(see illustrations).
To attach the towing eyelet:
A. Use a coin to pry open the lower edge of the cover (A).
B. Screw the towing eyelet (C) in place (B), first by hand and then \
using the tire iron until it is securely in place.
After the vehicle has been towed, the eyelet should be removed and retur\
ned to the tool bag. Press the cover back into
position.
Precautions when the vehicle is in tow
l The steering wheel must be unlocked. Turn the ignition key to position I\
or II.
l The gear selector must be in position N.
l Maximum speed: 50 mph (80 km/h). Do not exceed the maximum allowable t\
owing speed.
l Maximum distance with front wheels on ground: 50 miles (80 km).
l While the vehicle is being towed, try to keep the tow rope taut at all t\
imes.
l The vehicle should only be towed in forward direction.
CAUTION!
- Please check with state and local authorities before attempting this t\
ype of towing, as vehicles being towed are subject
to regulations regarding maximum towing speed, length and type of towing\
device, lighting, etc.
- If the vehicle's battery is dead, do not attempt to start the vehicle \
by pushing or pulling it as this will damage the three-
way catalytic converter(s). The engine must be jump started using an a\
uxiliary battery (see
page 136).
- If the vehicle is being towed on a flat bed truck, the towing eyelets \
must not be used to secure the vehicle on the flat
bed. Consult the tow truck operator.

Three-way catalytic converter
Points to keep in mind
l Keep your engine properly tuned. Certain engine malfunctions, particular\
ly involving the electrical,
fuel or distributor ignition systems, may cause unusually high three-way\
catalytic converter
temperatures. Do not continue to operate your vehicle if you detect engi\
ne misfire, noticeable loss of
power or other unusual operating conditions, such as engine overheating \
or backfiring. A properly tuned
engine will help avoid malfunctions that could damage the three-way cata\
lytic converter.
l Do not park your vehicle over combustible materials, such as grass or le\
aves, which can come into
contact with the hot exhaust system and cause such materials to ignite u\
nder certain wind and weather
conditions.
l Excessive starter cranking (in excess of one minute), or an intermitte\
ntly firing or flooded engine can
cause three-way catalytic converter or exhaust system overheating.
l Remember that tampering or unauthorized modifications to the engine, the\
Electronic Control
Module, or the vehicle may be illegal and can cause three-way catalytic \
converter or exhaust system
overheating. This includes:
- Altering fuel injection setting or components.
- Altering emission system components or location or removing components\
.
- Repeated use of leaded fuel.
NOTE: Unleaded fuel is required for vehicles with three-way catalytic convert\
ers.
