pg. 80 Climate control
Electronic climate control (ECC)
AUTO
This function automatically regulates the Electronic Climate Control sys\
tem so that the selected
temperatures are maintained. The blower, heating, air distribution (air\
flow), air conditioning, and
optional air quality sensor are controlled. If you prefer to manually set any of these functions, the remaining
functions will still be controlled automatically. Pressing the AUTO butt\
on overrides any settings that were
previously made manually.
Rear window and sideview mirror defrosters
This function defrosts/ de-ices the rear window and sideview mirrors.
The LED in the switch will light up to indicate that the heating functio\
n is engaged. See
page 61 for additional
information on this function.
Never use ice scrapers made of metal as they can easily scratch the mirr\
or surface.
Temperature
These controls are used to individually set the temperature for both sid\
es of the passenger compartment.
Please note that the compartment will not be heated or cooled faster by \
setting the temperature higher or lower
than necessary.
Set the control to the temperature you prefer.

CAUTION!
- Do not refuel with the engine running
1. Turn the ignition off or to position I. If the ignition is on, an inco\
rrect reading
could occur in the fuel gauge.
- After refueling, close the fuel filler cap by turning it clockwise unt\
il it clicks into place
1.
- Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Do not press the handle on the filler\
nozzle more than one extra time. Too much fuel in
the tank in hot weather conditions can cause the fuel to overflow. Overf\
illing could also cause damage to the emission
control systems.
- Avoid spilling gasoline during refueling. In addition to causing damag\
e to the environment, gasolines containing
alcohol can cause damage to painted surfaces, which may not be covered u\
nder the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
- Do not use gasolines containing methanol (methyl alcohol, wood alcoho\
l). This practice can result in vehicle
performance deterioration and can damage critical parts in the fuel syst\
em. Such damage may not be covered under the
New Vehicle Limited Warranty.
1. If the fuel filler cap is not closed tightly or if the engine is runn\
ing when the vehicle is refueled, the Check Engine Light
(malfunction indicator lamp) may indicate a fault. However, your vehic\
le's performance will not be affected. Use only Volvo original
or approved fuel filler caps.
pg. 119 Starting and driving
Starting the vehicle
Starting the engine
- Fasten the seat belt.
WARNING!
Before starting, check that the seat, steering wheel and mirrors are adj\
usted properly. Make sure the brake pedal can be
depressed completely. Adjust the seat if necessary. See pages
84 and 87.
- Apply the parking brake (hand brake) if not already set. The gear se\
lector is locked in the (P)ark position
(SHIFTLOCK).
- Without touching the accelerator pedal, turn the ignition key
1 to the starting position. Allow the starter to operate for up
to 10 seconds. Release the key as soon as the engine starts
2. If the engine fails to start, repeat this step.
NOTE:
l If the key blade section of the remote is not fully folded out when star\
ting the vehicle, the immobilizer function may
make it impossible to start the engine.
l After a cold start, idle speed may be noticeably higher than normal for \
a short period. This is done to help bring
components in the emission control system to their normal operating temp\
erature as quickly as possible, which enables
them to control emissions and help reduce the vehicle's impact on the en\
vironment.
l For cold starts at altitudes above 6000 ft (1800 meters), depress the \
accelerator pedal halfway and turn the key to the
starting position. Release the pedal slowly when the engine starts.
- To release the gear selector from the (P)ark position, the engine must be running (or the ignition key must be\
in position
II) and the brake pedal must be depressed.

BLIS is an information system that indicates the presence of another veh\
icle moving in the same direction as your vehicle
in the sideview mirror's "blind area."
The system is based on digital camera technology. The cameras (1) are \
located beneath the side-view mirrors.
When one (or both) of the cameras have detected a vehicle in the blind\
area (up to approximately 10 ft. (3 meters) from the
side of your vehicle, and up to approximately 31 ft. (9.5 meters) behi\
nd the side-view mirror), see the illustration in the
right column, the indicator light in the door panel (2) illuminates.
WARNING!
l BLIS is an information system, NOT a warning or safety system.
l BLIS does not eliminate the need for you to visually confirm the conditi\
ons around you, and the need for you to turn
your head and shoulders to make sure that you can safely change lanes.
l As the driver, you have full responsibility for changing lanes in a safe\
manner.
The light will glow continuously to alert the driver of the vehicle in t\
he blind area.
NOTE: The door panel indicator light illuminates on the side of the vehicle wh\
ere the system has detected another vehicle.
If your vehicle is passed on both sides at the same time, both lights wi\
ll illuminate.
BLIS has an integrated function that alerts the driver if a fault should\
occur with the system. For example, if one or both of
the system's cameras are obscured, a message (see the table on
page 147) will appear in the information display in the
instrument panel. If this occurs, clean the camera lenses. If necessary,\
the system can be temporarily switched off (for
instructions, see
page 147).

NOTE: After the battery has been disconnected or replaced, lock and unlock th\
e vehicle with the central
locking system's remote control to reactivate such features as the power\
windows, moonroof, courtesy
lighting, etc.
WARNING!
Ventilation hose:
l The battery generates hydrogen gas, which is flammable and explosive. Th\
e battery is fitted with a
ventilation hose which vents hydrogen gas out of the battery compartment\
through a ventilation
opening in the bottom of this compartment. If the battery must be replac\
ed, it is essential that the
ventilation hose is properly connected to the battery and that it is rou\
ted through the ventilation
opening provided (see illustration).
l Be sure the ventilation hose is free of debris.
l Only use replacement batteries equipped with a ventilation hose. Consult\
your Volvo retailer.

Replacing bulbs
When replacing bulbs, keep the following points in mind:
l Never touch the glass of bulbs with your fingers. Grease and oils from y\
our fingers vaporize in the
heat and will leave a deposit on the reflector, which will damage it.
l The optional Active Bi-Xenon headlight bulbs contain trace amounts of me\
rcury. These bulbs should
always be disposed of by an authorized Volvo retailer.
l The following bulbs should only be replaced by a trained and qualified V\
olvo service technician:
- Active Bi-Xenon headlights,
- Courtesy (dome) lighting,
- Reading lights,
- Glove compartment lights
- Turn signals and courtesy lights in the side door mirrors
- High-mounted brake lights
